Have you ever been Banned? (here or anywhere)

Postby Paranoid__Android » Mon Nov 24, 2008 4:12 pm UTC

Just curious to see what percentage of you lot have been banned from xkcd.

Also i've never been banned, but I could join funky new groups if I did get myself banned, is it worth it?

Once, from a IRC channel. It was a clipboard dump, what I accidentally dumped was against channel rules. I was banned for a day because it was accidental.
And than OOTD bans me daily from the Mafia channel :P

Have been banned a few times from chat channels. Mostly by auto-anti-flood-bots when I was talking to someone and copy-pasted a sentence a few hundred thousand times...

I was permanently banned from the #hugs irc channel (I don't remember which network) immediately upon joining it and declaring I wanted a hug. :( I bet they couldn't imagine I actually use the Hugs Haskell compiler, which is what I later found out the channel was actually about.

There are those who are banned from specific areas of the forums. I believe all that really means is that they are no longer allowed to post there, but can continue reading. Or maybe not, I'm not 100% sure. Regardless, it's not worth it.

If you're banned from the whole forums, usually it's for a specific period of time, usually a day to a week. Attempting to circumvent that gets you a Permanent Ban.

There is no coming back from a Permanent Ban. Circumventing it just gets you banned whenever we catch it. And we will, eventually.

I highly recommend it.

Now, if you're talking about the irc channel, #xkcd... beats me. I don't go there. Them folks are scary.

I was going to vote "yes", and explain that that was only from S/FI (before we had this fancy new group for it), but then I remembered that I posted in Belial's "Post here and get banned" thread a while back, and was served with a week's worth of not being able to visit FaiD.

Surely you would still be able to read forums from which you are banned if you just don't log in? Or is it IP-based? Or is that classified information?

Well, there are certain parts of the fora that can only be seen if you're logged in. By banning people from those places, I expect they'd be unable to read posts.

Nope, but about 8 times from the PlaystationUnderground forums...it was almost like a forum of YouTube comments and I went berserk on people's stupidity.

Now I'm permanently banned, but I did manage to rack up about 12,000 posts over a few years :P

I got perma-banned from the WoW EU forums about a year ago for posting the browser-hijack rickroll link, which another person had previously masked behind a separate URL to suggest it just hosted some screenshots of upcoming content. Although, there were 2/3 items of temp. suspension leading up to it for misconduct. Sometimes you just had to fight fire with fire, and it seems the mods there only like the normal red fire, not the retaliatory, intellectually-superior, sarcasm-rife retorts I pulled off.

I am 95% sure that it is possible to ban someone from a certain forum in the sense of can't-even-see-it, and that this has been done here at least once. I think the normal bans are called "Banned from [forum]" and the can't-even-see-it bans are called "Bye Bye [forum]." But yeah, if you weren't logged in, that wouldn't matter, would it? Unless the ban was for LSR, Dear SB, or some group that included those.

From here, no. But I've been at a few forums that turned to crap, and got myself banned as I left for shits and giggles. I also once got banned a number of years ago from some silly forum for bypassing the swear filters and maximum topic length. :P That was fun.

I've also been members of forums when people hacked in and banned everyone, but I guess that doesn't count.

I have been warned by the XKCD mods more than once (for good reasons), but never banned. But I did get banned from a Mac forum once because one of the mods said there never has been any malicious software of any kind made for Mac OS, ever, and I said that was not true, and the next day I logged in to a message saying "You were banned for calling Shweb a liar."

I got kicked from an IRC channel once, when I was younger... I thought I was being clever, but looking back I can see I was just obnoxious. One of the admins opped himself as a warning... I reacted like it was directed at me, and begged for mercy as a joke... little realising that it was directed at me. So now I still think I'm being clever, and the op thinks I've been warned and I'm ignoring it. The obvious happens.

I don't recall ever being banned from anywhere though. Yet. But tomorrow is another day!

[edit]
Oh yeah, I also got kicked from #dsdev for arguing with the douchemonger of a mod there about something rather trivial... there's a good reason I stopped idling in that channel a while ago.

Code: Select all

I guess I've never managed to be enough of an asshole. I've insulted people and/or used vulgar language but never gotten so much as a warning. I guess its because it's always pretty clear I'm not a troll or trying to make trouble?
