Favorite bands of the 90s

Postby Adalwolf » Sun Feb 22, 2009 8:13 am UTC

So, what are your favorite bands of the 90s?

Mine, in no order are
Alice in Chains
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Bush
Blind Melon
Godsmack

A second question:
Does anyone know of any newer grunge bands? Or bands that are similar to Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Bush?

NSYNC ROCKS MAN

And otown is the sweeeee-eeeet

2gether? Forever!

And the Backstreet Boys, they tore up my heart.

Also, I like Nirvana. And . . .I like the song Black Hole Sun.

I don't like too much 90s music, but would like cool bands to listen to.

Eh, I don't listen to Radiohead, but I think they are.

edit:

wiki says they formed in the 80s. I don't know when they became big, though.

What does "from the 90s" mean? If it means "started in the 90s", then my list would be something like

Within Temptation
Nightwish
Velvet Acid Christ
Ayreon

Does Sonic Youth count? They didn't actually start in the 90s, and some of their best stuff was released in the 80s, but they still rocked the hell out of the 90s too.

Also:
Low
Red House Painters
At The Drive-In
Indian Summer
Slint
Sunny Day Real Estate
Mineral
Botch

I'll be listing a combination of bands that either:
were formed in the 90's
released their first album in the 90's
reached the peak of their popularity in the 90's (for bands that were formed circa late 80's.)
which means I can list damn near anything I would like.

Agalloch
Tool
Opeth
Arcturus
Acid Bath
Portishead
The Smashing Pumpkins
Third Eye Blind
Oasis
Mr. Bungle
A Perfect Circle
3
Muse
The Stone Roses
Collective Soul
Ayreon
Devin Townsend

Beck. Mellow Gold was stellar IMHO. As well as the earlier, folkier albums.

Edit: also, tangentially related: Beat Happening and the Halo Benders.

Mostly the Elephant 6 bands, especially The Olivia Tremor Control. And bob hund, a fantastic Swedish band. Other than that I don't think I listen to a lot of 90's music. There's too much good new music to keep up with. Oh, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci too.

Yeah I thought about them, I tend to think of them more as an early 00s act, which is silly really I know, considering they had a knockout debut album and probably the best EP ever in the 90s.

Good catch. Also, GUIDED BY VOICES.

And the Pixies, though technically they're more of a late-'80s act.

Hot Water Music
Alkaline Trio
The Suicide Machines
Bigwig
Fugazi
Jawbox

No Porcupine Tree yet? I'm amazed.

Also, King Crimson were mildly active in the 90s, weren't they? :)

Hmm, I might include bands that weren't formed in the 90's, but either had their breakthrough in that time, or just had an excellent time during the decade. So there goes:

Stereolab
Mogwai
Sigur Rós
Mr. Bungle
Autechre
Radiohead
Flaming Lips (read disclaimer above)
Daft Punk
Squarepusher
Boards of Canada
Björk

Yeah, sorta.

Soundgarden! Top of the list, NO question.
Rage Against the Machine go up there...
Incubus in the late 90s
Anything Joe Satriani released in that decade
Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the Smashing Pumpkins are a few more I was into at the time :)
