Oh dear god where to begin...
Possibly the most amazing song and band I have ever heard is The Dead Flag Blues by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.it's avont-garde post-rock and it is amazing.

Some more post-rock goodness... pretty sure plenty of peeps know them but i'll chuck them up here anyway; Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, God is an Astronaut. All of them are amazing.

Haven't seen anyone put much in the way of progressive rock up here, so i'll put slightly more then my paltry 2 cents and recommend Porcupine Tree. I couldn't really just suggest one song from them, so I'll go with two; Blackest eyes (select it from the myspace list). I actually cant find that song on youtube at all which sucks. Also try Pure Narcotic - a brilliant acoustic song. For overall epic-ness, I would suggest that you try to find a copy of their 12-minute long song 'Arriving somewhere but not here', but it seems youtube is devoid of that as well.

I might be ridiculously behind on this one, nor have I read the entire thread, but I just discovered Neutral Milk Hotel and I'm freakin' IN LOVE with this group.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcgyKo7vbm4

just cd with a song, In an Aeroplane Over the Sea" - title track of one album.

Neutral Milk Hotel is an AMAZING band. That album is absolutely amazing. Their other, not as much.

Anyways, I recommend...

Adam Linder:

And his new band, Sister City:
http://www.last.fm/music/sister+city

He's a great guy, and uploads his on stuff on what.cd, which is awesome. He could use more attention.

The first time I heard that song, it was being performed by some street musicians in Italy :) . It was pretty much the highlight of the day, they were good.

If I had to pick an artist, I'd probably go for Smashing Pumpkins right now, I just think Mayonaise is an awesome song (and yes, it is deliberately misspelt).

Parabola - Tool

A very unique band (in my opinion), and one of my favorites.
Caution, video is weird.
Ain't No Rest for the Wicked - Cage the Elephant

Totally different genre from tool, but still amazing.

I present to you: The New Orleans BINGO! Show.

http://www.neworleansbingoshow.com/Site/MUSIC.html

You can listen to both of their CD's for free, via streaming audio. For songs, I recommend 'In A Lounge With Broken Wings', 'Mid-City Baby', 'Johnny Christ' and 'Lucky Number 5'.

It's mostly undefinable genre, but with a heavy Jazz influence. In fact, they frequently play with the New Orleans Jazz Preservation Hall. I know, Jazz isn't most people's thing any more, but do not let that stop you from giving them a listen, they really are spectacularly good.

That Cage The Elephant song is great. Very catchy. Nice indie spin on the White Stripes sort of sound. And a great video.

I've tried many times to like Tool and failed every time. The closest thing to that which I like is probably... Fantomas?

The Real Tuesday Weld is a real treat. Most people know the very distinctive "Bathtime in Clerkenwell," but it's a incredibly poor represtantion of their musical style, which hearkens back very deliberately to the sounds of past decades, the 1930's among others. Check "The Ugly and the Beautiful" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi3Ehs0kndk or "The Show Must Go On"" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9ZiZ9p2aDo, both from the album I, Lucifer which is quite excellent. If you like those, I would highly recommend checking out the rest of their albums. Lately I've been listening nonstop to their most recent stuff, the "live" album At the End of the World, which is a positive delight.

I was gonna post streetlight manifesto, they are one of my favorite bands.. they are great musicians and ive been to 2 streetlight/reel big fish shows and they never disappoint. But i would recommend listening to a less over played song by streetlight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2yeNzL7rTU

but since those are already put up im going to recommend Muse, a band from UK that has its own style and very talented members, specially the lead singer with great voice, great guitar skills and great piano skills.

Anyone interested in post rock of the Explosions variety might want to check out EF. Maybe not the most original stuff ever, but some vocals, accordion and harmonicas makes it interesting. They're Swedish as well, I'm a bit ashamed I didn't know about these guys before.

I have one band that I must recommend: The Cure.
They are brilliant and not at all just for "goths" or something. And in terms of songs, I recommend A Forest or Play For Today.

I would definitely suggest Graham Coxon. He is probably best known as the guitarist for the UK band Blur, but his solo work is certainly worth checking out. In particular I'd suggest his newest album "The Spinning Top".

If you like punk music, especially Garage Indie Punk, check out the Horrors
http://www.last.fm/music/The+Horrors
They have some really good stuff. I liked their first album Strange House more at first, But their second album Primary Colours has some great songs and it is growing on me.
Some songs to check out are :Sheena Is a Parasite, Excellent Choice, Gloves.
And on the second Album, Mirror Image, Who Can Say, and Do You Remember.
Really worth looking up, One of my favourites.
Circle, Strafe to Victory! God, I've read too much Mac Hall.

God Is an Astronaut - They are an instrumental/post-rock band out of Ireland. Very space-y. No vocals. Ranges from heavy to soft, excited to melancholy.

Maybe try Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes or Joanna Newsom (though the latter's voice tends to be a 'love it or hate it' thing).
