0772: "Frogger"

Postby redoran » Wed Jul 28, 2010 3:39 am UTC

Alt text: "I understand you and your team worked hard on this, but when we said to make it more realistic, we meant the graphics."

I always wondered why the frog was half as big as the car.

Got a chuckle.
Who stops for a frog anyway? That truck wouldn't even be able to see it...unless frogger is an extremely large frog. Going off the picture and classic depictions, he does seem to be about the size of a small car. In which case, the reality of the truck crashing shouldn't be their main priority, rather it should be how that frog is going to leap at those sizes, since animals don't scale up and down well.
If you start an argument over whether "they" "them" and "their" can be used as gender neutral singular pronouns, in this thread, I will do terrible, terrible things to you.

Honestly, who swerves in front of another car on what appears to be a freeway because of a frog on the road? Maybe a deer, but a frog?

Edit: Damn, ninja'd. D:

Well, perhaps if that frog was dancing and singing in the middle of the road, people would surely stop.

Considering that the frog is the size of a small car, yeah, I would swerve out of the way too.

Why is the one guy (or girl) saying "Mom!" in the lower right corner? Are they implying that their mother was involved in the crash? :?

Yeah, the comic is a picture, but the comedic part of the comic is the title text.

As a truck driver i have hit 2 cats 4 birds and 1 deer and i have never let off the fuel or hit the brake, doing so is the fastest way to get in an accident or confuse the animal and still end up hitting it.

Or it is a child who, having just witnessed a horrible crash, is seeking comfort from their mother.

The other half of the map should be even more fun, since realistic frogs can swim.

I had to play a round (the wiiware version) after reading this. I'm not very good, but I just got my highest score.
Totally random totally awesome SF quote:

Someone already made the frog-as-big-as-a-car joke.

Someone else already linked the Robot Chicken clip.

GOOMH, xkcd discussion forum.

So the only thing I got left is:

xkcd wrote:I understand you and your team worked hard on this, but when we said to make it more realistic, we meant the graphics.

Somewhat ironically, the graphics in this comic are actually significantly better than the graphics in the original game.

Well, since I'm here: Atari 2600 FTW! Back when I was growing up, our game controllers only had one button, and we liked it that way!

Ever seen the "realistic" Mario and Pacman drawings? Or the Megaman English cover? (And they've tried. Bomberman somewhat failed.)

Of cause, those were more realistic in the graphical sense than the "real world" sense..

The idea of making Risk more realistic was pretty much abandoned after the 1939-1945 game...

This wasn't even that funny when Robot Chicken did the exact same joke. Feels like the alt text should have a sitcom laugh track after it. "I've heard of realism but this is RIDICULOUS!"

Forget about the graphics, the physics engine is terrible! What happened to conservation of momentum? That car colliding with the truck should have moved the whole resultant mass forward (killing the frog). Get with it people!

1) Trucks have a LOT more mass than cars, especially loaded ones.
2) If you look carefully, the biggest issue is not that the truck didn't move forward when the car hit it. Notice that the truck rolled onto it's side while skidding backwards somehow, the length of the truck increased, and either that car front got absolutely pulverized or has dented itself onto the bottom of the truck.

Still a better simulation than Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing regardless.

... and the frog hopped backwards.

A very long time ago (in computer terms) my mother's computer had a game on it where you had to direct a frog to leap on to rapidly disappearing lilypads. The accompanying "music" was some Soviet anthem. It was awesome but I don't remember enough about it to find it on Google or similar. Anyone shed any light?

Edit: found wiki on it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perestroika_(video_game) and a remake - (NSFW as too addictive) http://www.matthiasziehe.de/projects-detail-aquaphobic/, but you really really need the "Be Proud Comrades" music to get the atmosphere!!
