I think Randall is taking a vacation and we're in for a long week. At this rate, he could add new images based on our comments.

So with that sandcastle some ant kings would be nice.

I was just wondering how this comic will affect the archive, or, behave once the the the next comic is posted?

It cannot be expected of future visitors to the site, a couple years down the line, to wait for the individual images to load at certain time intervals.

Will this be turned into a gif in the future or does Randall intend to leave it like this only, with multiple js files?

My mirror of the first comic just went down. Does anyone have the URL/a Mirror for the first photo?

Until I get it it'll be missing from http://aubronwood.com/singlefileprojects/xkcd.php

I don't see why he couldn't expect them to wait. I would prefer it actually because it sort of reinforces the feeling/message/whatever that I get from the comic.

I think the multiple JS files, etc. are Monroe & co, debugging and improving while everybody is trying to break it.

I think you guys are determined to believe something bad is going to happen.

All i've seen so far is two characters enjoying a (i presume) beach. Laying in the sun, shaking sand out of your hair, going to the water, all of these are normal things to do.

I think people are reading way too into things like the hair. These are all hand drawn images, the lines are not always perfectly the same width. Going through life assuming the worst of everything is a terrible way to go.

Also, 11:30! They DO seem to be sand castling!

Hm, I see I'm not the only one reporting this, but I normally have javascript disabled, so when I saw a static image, I tried refreshing first, then enabled it. What happened I saw one frame for a second or two, and then another. I refreshed again, it changed maybe twice as fast, and it kept changing between those two frames after each refresh faster and faster until it was only one of them.

I love this comic. It makes everyone just stop and take their time. It's contemplative. And it's interesting how many people's thoughts turn dark when faced with a quiet moment of contemplation.

A gnoll exists in a lot of fantasy games, such as Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft. He did mean knoll, but shame on you for not knowing what a gnoll is.

Anyway, this is definitely one of the best comics in a while; many accolades to Randall.

True, and not only that, thousands of people separated by various timezones are all in sync, watching each frame unfold together.

A sand castle isn't clever/interesting enough to warrant such a big investment in the reader's time. I am hoping it builds up to either something really ingenious a la black hat guy, or something philosophical and/or whimsical a la white beret guy.

That or red spiders.

After #1110 I didn't think that Randall could make a better and more intriguing comic, but as usual he has outdone himself.

I tip my hat for you Sir, yet again.

Unfortunately, I think you are on to something. In the frame where she is "messing up her hair" I think it is actually falling out.

Don't like where this is going.

I'm with Shidoshi—I think it's just sand in her hair. Phlip already observed the flat part of the scene is waving up and down whereas the slanty part is static, and concluded that they were at the beach and the flat part is water. This seems to be confirmed by the scenes where the guy walked up to the water and put his toe in. So after she sat up after lying down and stuff started falling out of her hair, it seems plausible that was just sand, and in the next frame she was trying to get the rest of the sand out of her hair.

I'm picturing them constructing a gigantic sand castle over the next several panels. Hope that happens.

I'm thinking of setting up a picture frame that just shows this gif and refreshes every 30 mins.

I think it's not far-fetched to turn to dark thoughts considering the past(?) illness of Randall's wife. (see 1048 and 1141)
But still, yes, quite interesting.

I looked in the source code and was able to find a javascript file. I can't read JavaScript quite well enough to decipher what it's getting at, but that seems to be the code driving it.

Anybody else notice the slight changes in the tides? It rippled slightly before the guy stuck his foot in the water and have risen slightly again in the last two panels.

I wonder if Randall is drawing these live, every half hour, with influence from what is in this thread. Many quickly got a morbid vibe so he's turning it into something beautiful, innocent (the sandcastle).

If you open a persistent connection to c1 dot xkcd dot com/stream/comic/time?method=EventSource (or c2, c3, c4) you will get notified of any updates.

The spread-parameter is in seconds, and is used as a random delay before requesting the image (as to not overload the server, I imagine). Wait a random number of seconds between 0 and spread before requesting the image.

Been following the comic and this thread all day, today.

I guess you could call it art, as it makes people stop and think about it.
Really fascinating to see what all the different people make of it and how we all try to work together to unravel the mystery and try to 'beat' time :)

Someone should put this in a museum, somehow. Right next to #1110 and other XKCD pearls.

I'm so curious as to what will happen next, but I'm sure it will be beautiful.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but as as far as I know, the original red spiders were actually Randall's sketches from when he was bored during NASA lectures/seminars. Since then they just became a reference for those in the know or "part of the community" as you rightly said.

Has anyone looked into whether the hashes concatenate into some sort of binary data format? Maybe another png or picture or whatever, or a zip, or sound (which would be interesting, given the context of these images).

There is a js file referenced in the source time07.min.js, I've started looking through it but Mr Munroe has done his best to obfuscate the code. I've seen three images and would dearly love a link to them all.

I thought initially it was just something "deep" and enjoyed it for itself, now I want more. MORE GODDAMMIT!
