The nonlinear progression of time in this comic has been mentioned a few times, but has anyone compared the speed of changes in the comic against the number of people viewing the page? It seems like the changes are smaller around obvious end points like noon and midinght. I'm thinking this might be an interactive version of the "a watched pot never boils" concept?

Or it could just be that my perception of time is skewed around those times based on my own preconceptions.

What's he doing? Just scratching himself.

Perhaps now it'll just be suttle updates of him moving once in a while. Just to mess with us.

Punchline: He's stuck up there. He refuses to come down because that would involve damaging the castle.

Or maybe...

But yeah. That's a large pile of sand.

I doubt it is interactive, but I am certain that it is not accidental.

I haven't noticed this but perhaps I haven't been looking closely enough. The only obvious trick I saw sas the "Later" "Bye" text frame suggesting that was the last panel, I believe that frame was posted early on the second day.

Oh, absolutely. I hope to one day see the graphs of "refresh-clicks-of-comic", "refresh-clicks-of-forum", "new-posts-in-forum", etc. and see them spike ridiculously every half-hour. That and "new-member-registration" pegging out this week.

One thing I've noticed is that most of the png files have a "date:create" and "date:modify" field inside of them. However, many of them have the same values. Perhaps we can figure out when he created sets of frames. Not sure what this can tell us, but I wanted to add it to the mix. :) I haven't compiled the list for all of the images yet, but here is the data from the first 20 images (based on the images found at xkcd-aubronwood-com ) :

Guys, I just had a thought. What if this is a memorial of sorts to his wife? How they both built up their lives up to this point but now cueball is stuck representing how Randall can't move on without her.

Then again I could be completely wrong in the next 25 minutes :P

I have to hypothesize that Megan is out there doing something outside of our view. When Cueball left he parted her with words, but when she left she didn't say a word. Maybe she never left and Cueball is looking at her now. No idea what it could mean philosophically (if this is even shown to be correct).

I was wondering earlier if anything like this had been done; if so, this will likely set some sort of record for total duration, if it hasn't already.

I've been wondering if the point of the comic is about becoming more self aware of the amount of time spent pondering things which are ultimately trivial in our lives and that we have no influence over. Sort of Randall's version of Tool's "Vicarious." I've somewhat resigned myself that there isn't going to be "Oh My God!" ending to this and that the impressive part will be the duration, not the finale (or possibly even the message, if there is one).

Click & Drag was freaking awesome, but seemed to be more about just doing something on a scale that had never been done than it was "about" something. So far, the scale of this pales in comparison (while still being brilliant, simple art).

I was thinking of Zeno's paradox myself, these last few frames when his movements were becoming smaller and more subtle. And it would certainly connect with the "Time" theme. This last frame seems to go the other direction, though, so, no.

P.S. I am Randall, but not that Randall.

Though who knows how far into the future this will be updating sporadically. We may have to write a script that constantly watches the hash of the image, then posts an alert when it changes :p [shouldn't be too hard now that I think about it...]

And (not trying to be a total kiss-ass here) props to the mods, what with the deluge they're sorted through. 8-) I wonder if Randall gave them a heads-up Sunday afternoon. "Hey guys, get a lot of sleep, y'all gonna be busy..."

I could see that. Although the link I most miss from the main page is This is Indexed. Its the only other webcomic I read and I learned about it from xkcd yet Randall dropped it from the site some months ago.

Doing my little bit, and all that ;-)

Though who knows how far into the future this will be updating sporadically. We may have to write a script that constantly watches the hash of the image, then posts an alert when it changes :p [shouldn't be too hard now that I think about it...]

How can we assume that any comic will remain the same? How do we know that #247 has never been subtly changed over the years?

Long time reader (of both the comic and forums), first time poster.

Well, this is the most refreshing and frustrating thing I've seen in a long time. It makes so much sense and yet ... I'm left waiting for the other shoe to drop and for this terrible amount of anticipation I have inside of me to just wash away. This is almost as bad emotionally draining as watching the Tree of Life. Except it's spread out over ... days? ... months? He's done it again. I feel like this is possibly one of the most innovative uses I've seen of technology and art. He understands what this community is capable of and goes to great lengths to constantly amuse and surprise us, and this is a stroke of pure genius.

Oh, absolutely. I hope to one day see the graphs of "refresh-clicks-of-comic", "refresh-clicks-of-forum", "new-posts-in-forum", etc. and see them spike ridiculously every half-hour. That and "new-member-registration" pegging out this week.

I joined just to get in on this thread, so the last comment is most likely true.

Me too. I signed up about 50 hours ago, and most of that 50 hours I've been watching this thread or the comic. I think I was at work for a while, but I can't really remember.

And me too.
Just to add to the thread's post count.

Me Three. And this forum is not half bad, I think I'll stick around awhile. I've been reading the comic for years.

Alternative theory: The comic is a promotion for the forum to make up for dropping the link on the main page. (I signed up for this thread too, although I've been lurking for a while)

Ah. Can someone point me to the reason this happened? (I accept theories, too.)

Thus ended that campaign.

Yeah... I didn't want to be part of that group, so I went back and registered about 5 years ago instead. Just to be different.

I checked some of the comics while I was back there. They looked about the same, from what I can tell.

I too am one who discovered the forum because of this comic. This has been an epic couple of days!

The "What If" link replaced it.

Edit:
Hey, I can post links now! Here's what it looked like a year ago: http://web.archive.org/web/20120328103319/http://xkcd.com/
