Is there a wiki article on the unit of newpix yet?

Soon, a 1-pixel-wide vertical line will appear on the left and torture everyone's imagination.

It would be normal for a camera move to be exponential in speed; this is called 'easing' which make motion seem fluid and natural. You want to move the frame slightly, and then more and more until the peak of the curve of motion. Basic filmmaking, although in animation you have to break it down to each frame, it doesn't come naturally.

Don't even suggest it. If Randall's reading... he might get ideas *shudder*

I wonder how close we are to being the longest-running (not counting thread moves) individual comic thread.

And if it is zooming out, what's it zooming out to? Will it turn out that the castle is part of some sort of fractal? where the castle is part of an even larger castle?

If I were to guess, as admittedly we all are, I would guess he put the castle in the beach frame of Click and Drag, and now all it needs to do is zoom out onto Click and Drag... which would probably take eons, so he's all set.

That was debunked early on. Someone cleverly (but crudely) photoshopped the current state of Time into Click & Drag. There is no Castle scene like this on any of the shores in Click and Drag.

As for the motion, I'm in the Zoom & Pan camp. If it were a pure zoom-out, all elements should be moving toward the middle, but the shoreline is moving at a different rate than the left side of the castle.

I know. I was there. From the beginning. That's why I'm cranky because this thing is driving me crazy. What I meant is that Randall (not the guy who very crappily shopped the image), could "adjust" the click and drag frame to include the castle, and then pan out to it.

Though, to be fair, it doesn't seem like randall to rewrite history like that. I've only seen him do it in http://xkcd.com/851/ where he forgot Hey Jude.

No matter how many times I watch the gif, I keep expecting his head to go between her legs when she lays back. Then she looks disappointed and sits back up when he gets up and dips his toes in the water. And they both look awkward as he sits back down. Then to diffuse the awkwardness, they decide to build a really cool sandcastle.

Edit: Or I've been reading QuestionableContent too much lately.

I had the same worry, but have been checking at each update (when I am awake) and it has stayed "Wait for it."

Ok, new theory (that I haven't seen yet)

Rather than it being revealed that another castle has been built nearby, there is instead a full sized castle that mimics their little sand castle. Our characters walk in, but the image keeps expanding to show that their castle is nothing more than another sand castle built by another couple.

Oh me yarm, how many newpixs would that take!?!

(yes, I had to test it too.)

Oh, I take it all back, the pan vs zoom is not the ultimate destination. That would have been when he changed one pixel at a time. Now I need a new theory.

Are we sure that they're on a beach? Maybe they're building with soil, and the flat bit on the right is a road which had a puddle on it. The splash is the only evidence it's water at all other than context.

Maybe they're giants building in the sand. They're so big that the tidal changes aren't noticeable on this scale.

What exactly does a change from 2013-03-25T06:54:32+00:00 to 2013-03-25T02:54:32-04 (last pic) mean? We've moved to a different time zone now?

Has anyone considered the significance of the castle? I've been following most of the thread, but being a fulltime student has meant I can't devote as much time here. The castle starts off with both of them building the first tower, then she builds most of the first wall and second tower while he helps a little bit. He leaves as she builds the foundation, and then he helps her, and when she leaves, he puts the finishing touches on the castle when, OOPS, he falls and breaks the first tower they built together, only to build up a wall there in order to patch it up. May be insignificant, but I felt it was worth a glance.

Great job everyone! I've been following the thread since monday, it's that I needed to gather enough reasons to post.
First of all, thank you very much for the timer somebody linked a few pages ago, and for xkcd.aubronwood dot com too (FYI: aubronwood took over the no1. place in auto-completion for "xk..." for me in chrome).
Also, am I right that with aubronwood online, this is the first xkcd animation with a storyline ever (not counting the trafficlights and the 3D headache)?

Somebody was talking about songs about 30 newpix ago. In the unlikely event that you wanted to know, the one I've got stuck in my head is Solid Rock by Dire Straits:

I feel like this comic is starting to get towards the endpoint. The changes got smaller, and now it seems to be panning/zooming out/whatever, possibly to reveal something off to the left. Whatever it is we will see, it's probably going to be the conclusion to the comic.
I hope I'm wrong, because following this has been wonderful, but I also hope I'm right, because homework doesn't exactly do itself.

In addition to pan (turning the camera to the left and to the right, keeping it in the same position) and zoom (changing the focal length of the lens) there are other motions. Trucking the camera, moving it to the left or to the right, keeping it pointed in the same direction); dollying, moving the camera closer (dolly in) or farther away (dolly out) (this is like zoom but different); and pedestal (raising or lowering the camera, up or down without tilting) and tilt (tilting the camera, up or down without raising or lowering it.)

No, I didn't make it to 6 pm CDT.
