Someone dun screwed with the comic stream soon after last frame.

From 23:02:46 to 23:04:33, the stream of image URLs was spammed with a stream of timestamps every 3.5s, named "loadtest"; no idea why or what the duration means, but just figured I'd let you guys know. It screwed with the IRC newpix bot, for one thing.

Just wanted to let people know I made the scrollable version of the Time strip more tablet friendly. Still flags me as spam if I try to make it clickable.

That could be quite interesting indeed! Maybe Lord Randall, Creator of the One True Comic is planning a 'finale', the every promised 'it', which will involve releasing several new frames in a row. This must have been to ensure that the image servers could take the strain of however many people/browsers/bots are currently viewing the comic. Could this finally be the end of Time?

On my lappy (OS X 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.8) it responds to scrolling by going backwards - no matter whether I scroll right, left, up, or down.

Nice idea, tho.

Moi? Most of the time. Parents and grandparents all had cataract surgery, so it's sunglasses and brimmed hats for the last couple of decades when I'm exposed to the DayStar. Probably only superstition. Oh, do I like women who wear hats! Thinking back, I can't think of any time when my opinion of a young lady was changed because of a hat (or not) but they are great flirty fun, so I suppose I am.

Just wanted to bob in and say: I STILL EXIST. And have still been following the comic!! As often as I could manage. Easter weekend is kind of a 'big deal' in the good ol' UK so I have been SO SO busy but have checked the comic at every point of internet access available to me!!

I miss the thread :( - I have no chance of being able to follow what I have missed (as it has more than doubles in size!!) but if anyone can roughly update me from around page 100 (trebuchet entrance!) I would be massively happy about that!!

... I will be around tomorrow (fingers crossed) and I am MAJORLY happy that people's dreams came true (RE:trebuchet) and that it is STILL GOING AFTER ALMOST A WEEK.

This is just fantastic. I am tempted to say better than 'Umwelt' and 'Click and Drag' but we shall just have to... 'Wait for it'... and see!!

Story of my life: leave for 40 newpix, come back, find 100 newpages waiting for me. I've been catching up for my entire day the last 16 newpix and I still have 75 newpages to go... I may never catch back up. But I can try.

ThatGingerBrit wrote:So here I am, long time xkcd reader, and I encounter this comic. Completely and utterly stumped, I decided to make an account purely to take part in this monstrous discussion. Can anybody at all help bring me up to speed of just what the hell is going on?

Everyone's gone mad, starting with Lord Randall. The comic is a super-slow-mo animation (one new frame every 30m, or newpix) and, in the intervals between said newpix, we have created an entire new culture. There has also been a great deal of insane discussion about what the beach is made of, and over 9001 references made to other XKCD comics/other troves of awesomeness.

belliott4488 wrote:EMERGENCY NOTICE

Okay, fellow timeWaiters ... I think the time has come to admit that we have a problem. A big problem.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only commentator on this this thread whose first thought on awakening this morning was something along the lines of, "Oh! I wonder how far they got over night! I've got to go check!"

Now that we see the continuing progress it's become all too painfully clear that this can - and most likely will - go on for days, weeks, maybe longer. After all, we all know that Mr. Randall Monroe has far more time on his hands than common sense, as we saw from the Cut and Past episode. How much time do you think it takes him to generate a new frame, when all that changes from the previous one is a couple of stick figures and maybe a few pixels of sand?

The guy has us, and he has us bad.

I'm afraid the time has come to act, before more lives are irreparably ruined. I'm not sure what the solution is - teams assigned to watch over the strip in shifts? Designated authors to keep the thread active while others get some rest (or worse - get some work done)?

And what of those hard-core who have not slept for more than 25 minutes at a stretch since early Monday morning (you know who you are)? Should we start to make arrangements for food deliveries? Contact numbers for family or other loved ones who can apply the occasional sponge bath (in 25 minutes or less)??

People, we are not sheep. The time has come to grasp the bull by the tail and look the situation square in the face! This is our internet time we're talking aobut!!!!

You were far too late when you posted this. It's even later now. Nah, by this point the comic must continue. If it ever ends, thousands upon thousands of people will wander the streets, glassy-eyed, muttering about newpix and sandcastles. The only way to keep the world's economy functioning even slightly is for Randall to continue feeding the addiction, one newpix (newpic?) at a time.

If the insanity ever dies down, I'll do it. As matters stand right now I can't even keep up with the thread, let alone its references. And mod madness IS NOT HELPING.

Take some time tonight and catch up, past couple of nights we've only had 1 or 2 newpages in 14-16 newpix.
Note: by "night" I mean night for me, which is like 12 AM - 8 AM PST, or 8 AM to 4 PM UTC (I think. DST confuses me...)

And I'm starting to doubt it's an April Fool's prank. It doesn't seem...complete enough.

Off by one. You're not actually in PST*; you're in the PT time zone, which currently follows PDT, not PST, which is only what you have when you're out of Daylight Saving Time. So, seven hours between you and UTC. On the other hand, the UK has Summer Time, basically the same thing, so they're an hour ahead too, and it comes back out to eight hours, as far as they're concerned.

* I'm assuming for the sake of this discussion that you're in a part of America, likely the U.S., maybe Canada, which observes DST. If not, then little of that applies.
