There is some inaccuracy due to the floating point math i used, but it's close enough to visualize what's going on.

Edit: the h-scale is exaggerated by a factor of 10.

That's quite impressive, what'd you use to do that?

Thanks -- just used blitz3d, an old directx graphics wrapper. Same thing i used to do this: http://kieryn.com/xkcd-time/
Going to bed for now. Wait for it.

Well, either the tide is not rising on a sinusoidal curve, it's not a tide (maybe a flood), or it is a tide and we can use the heights to make a clock.

Or the time within the One True Comic is passing at different rates between NewPices, which might necessitate some form of Theory of Relativity.

We fit the heights to a sine curve, determine the times the newpix were created.

But, do pioneers really pion??

Well. Once upon a time*, yes...
Pioneer, 1515–25; < Middle French pionier, Old French peonier foot soldier. See peon, -eer
Peon: French pion foot soldier, pedestrian, day laborer. From Medieval Latin pedō man who goes on foot, from Latin pēs foot;

Wow, Kieryn,

finally we get an overwview of this phenomenon. Thanks a lot.

Suggestions:
-- I saw another level rise at frame 247. Is it included in your 244 rise, or was the diffence too small to qualify?
-- Could you press the difference values into the graphic (for those who can do integrals in their head but not substraction)?
-- I assume your baseline is "bottom of frame". Maybe you could state that explicitly.

A graphic says more than 1E3 words.

Thanks.

Contrary to the theories of Albert Einstein (and Galileo Galilei) there is precisely one absolute measure of time, the measurement in timeframes. There are two known systems of time measured relative to this time system: the "outsider" system (which measures either 30 (timeframes prior to 2013-03-30T00:00UTC-0400) or 60 'minutes' (to present) to the timeframe and the insider 'newpixian' system, whose conversion is currently unknown.

Whew. It hath been a productive hundred-or-so newpix for me. I fell behind in this needle-pulled thing over the weekend, and ended up roughly 100 pages behind before I started reading again. I have read it all. Also updated the wiki quotes page with a bunch of quotes, and actually linked the quotes to their original posts (forsrs, whoever had a bunch of quotes with no links, not cool. Or am I just that ocd?)

Time to go and coma. See you guys in several newpix!

EDIT: one quick reference to make:

My latest ==CRAZY== idea:

They are actually on a hovercraft!
They drive(?) along the beach, so they have unlimited access to water and sand.
They are heading to the river.
When they disappear, it's just because one of them is steering.
Waterlevel: I am guessing that as they accumulate more sand on the hovercraft, it gets heavier, so it slowly descends, which makes the water/sand level seem higher.

Actually, the last point could be easily tested by comparing the sea level with the number of black pixels (on the non-water area, if you wish to be extra picky) using the same key frames.

Is anyone extra-bored?

(Also, I assume some kind of force field that prevents the sand from falling off due to engine vibrations)
It's about time.

Crazy ideas? Hmm...

What if they're actually on Mars, pre-dessication? The river would be one of the now-dry canals that we've seen on the surface, and the sand could actually be red. The comic would culminate in an acceleration of comic-time to the present day, when the Curiosity strolls by and zaps the sand castle with a laser.

I think the coma-induced hallucinations have started early. Better go lay down.

Now that we know that Randall probably took up The One True Comic as a test for Externalities I believe that the story is not fully drawn already. I rather think he's having a creative experiment here, drawing batches of newpics whenever he feels in the mood or has an idea / an inspiration.
