A theory (That makes some sense): Randall doesn't do his work in png file format. So, ahead of the reveal, he converts a group of files to png, and shifts them to the server. He might be slightly ahead. He might have finished all of Time. Sometimes he finds something to change, and a few files are moved over again with new dates. Addendum: The hash is the hash of the image.

The other theory (That I like better): This is all planned out to make us wonder. The hash is solvable, and the prize is All of Time!!! Added: And that it is connected with Externalities, and we will all facepalm when the answer is revealed. (The answer should be OBVIOUS once you know the answer.)

Wow, still no flame war; I was sure that the bot was going to be a bone of contention, but a sensible response from everyone. I love you guys!

You know, when I first heard about the pressure cooker bombs in Boston, I, like many others, thought of that recent What-if. I started reading the xkcd thread about the bombing. People were talking about destructive capacities of various bombs, racism, etc. Posts were becoming unpleasant, tempers were flaring, it was not fun. I ran with all haste back to this thread, where one of us makes hats for fellow posters on request, other folks are crunching numbers for everyone, and we're all cheering on someone we've never met. Remember way back when there was a post from someone (don't remember who it was) who asked if we could please just discuss the comic. He kind of called us posers. But no one got offended or upset. People just thought it was cool he used the word "granfoolery." And now this lovely resolution with the bot. You people are nice, and funny, and fun, and clever and talented. It's is so cool to hang out with you this way.

So, what I want to know is, when is TimeCon: The One True Convention?

I know, I know. Wait for it.

My previous text was hard to understand so i've done a cool graph that shows his modifications compared to when they were released.

You will notice all the times he has changed things just before they get released!. There is even one frame where it seems he modified it AFTER it was released. So there is possible now two versions of this frame out there....

You can also see the steping line where he does more batches.

And also because of these last minute edits it suggests that it is in fact dynamic and he is changing and adding to it before it comes out. That would suggest that even if we knew the hash we would only get a little way ahead until we reach the point of Time that has not been written yet. So this means the future is not fixed and Megan/Cueball have free will etc. Someone could look at all the last minute changed Frames and see if their is anything important that he might have changed. Some of them are text frames and he may have just changed the dialog last minute.

Maybe those spikes correspond to times that the server had hiccups.
EDIT to add: or perhaps not. The biggest hiccup we've seen, the early reveal of flags, doesn't line up with a spike.

Seconded! Well said!

So, what I want to know is, when is TimeCon: The One True Convention?

One year after the End of Time in Boston, at the nearest pub to the location of the bombing. We shall all briefly raise our middle fingers to the bomber, have a moment of sorrow/remembrance for those hurt. After this we shall proceed to non hateful amusements and memories of the good Time, jokes, happy disagreement, and radical speculation of things to come. For entrance to the party, all must wear hats. Perhaps there will be a t-shirt?

yeah probably not. Server having problems should not change the contents of the png files. The data we are looking at is not a file modified time but the Timestamp from the image processing/editing software he used.

A very helpful graph. Thank you.
I agree that even if we knew the hash we would only get a little ahead. However, I think the changes are more fixes. I think he has known what he plans to do from the beginning. I am not sure if it's all done, or still in progress.
I think making it dynamic based on how it is received would be fabulous.

Unrelated: Has anyone thought of doing an animation assuming the rate of fluid rising is constant, and changing the frame rate appropriately? [heresy] Does this give us a good idea how much variable time is between newpix? {/heresy}

It should be on a black (volcanic) sand beach, so we can make replicas of the castles in the comic.

Volcanic sand is crap for making castles, and it gets terribly hot to the skin.

Much better to find a yellow- or grey-sand beach, make the castles, then drape something black over them. (Grey sand is much better structural material, iirc.)

Ooo this is interesting. Randall modified this frame at 13:58:15 on the 12th of April. That is 105 seconds before the frame went live at 14:00! He must have changed the text at the last minute.

No, no. The hashes aren't computed, the differential images are computed on the fly (and cached afterwards).

And they would be more around 600k anyway...

Wow I've found something else fascinating. above is a quote from near the beginning of the thread. The Time comic images have been changing AFTER they were released. When the original people checked the time stamps of the PNG files the Create Date stamp was 25th of march but now the create timestamp if you download the same [hash].png file is the 27th. This suggests to me that some process has been done that changed them on the 27th. My guess is that no image changes were done as the modified times have not changed. It is possible that these dates we can see in clear text in the files after the png image data is being generated by the web server and not the image processing software but I'm not sure really. There is also frame 20 that has its modified time as 15 hours AFTER it was released which means there could be two versions of the actual image out there. Don't know how we would get the original image from someone with a copy from before the 27th.

But what this does mean is that their is two versions of most of the images released before the 27th that probably only differ by their timestamps at the bottom of the files. I wonder if anyone uploaded as attachments to the forum any of the images in the first 100 frames so we can compare them.

What if we are creating time? What if time is a result of our continued contributions to its substance? What if Time is a reflection of this very thread?

They sit on a beach observing near nothingness as we observe the initial OTC (One True Comic- I am a faithless heathen who has watched from the beginning of Time but shown weakness and lived Outside too much) and as Rhomboid posts the usual thread beginning permalink to the original he also begins the sand castle. What better analogy for digital thread in a world where we can't store all the data we create than a sand castle? As we begin to realize the epic proportions of Time so does time begin to expand and, indeed, Megan's (sp?) fervor coincides with the rapid expansion that was the dawn of man's realization of Time. Even the mound constructed during the Madness (sp/terminology?) reflects the thread's lack of coherence during that time and its later revelation as an epic construction at the end of the Madness. Now as the initial thread and its speculations have given way to a devout group of followers and many, many lurk/followers so has the initial castle (replicated upon itself) given way to an existential secondary castle of greater complexity and lesser size.

Now, our every and ever-continuing contribution to this thread is fuel for minor changes to an original image that He-whose-name-is-sacred can edit at his relative leisure. The externality to Time is Time's own thread and The Past is merely commentary on the need for so many to be reminded that time marches on...

Or I'm tired and my theory is complete BS but it sure seems like the thread and Time develop synergistically... and the complexity of this smaller castle gives me the same 'too detailed for my available time' feeling that the religion and BlitzGirl, the great time-slayer, make me feel when I miss entire newpics and newpages at once :(

Surely it would be approx C(700,2). My memory from 24 years ago suggests that choosing k items from n (where the item is not put back for "rechoosing") is:

n! / (n! (n-k)!)

So

700! / (2! * 698!)

The 698! cancels and we're left with:

700 * 699 / 2 = 244,650.

Of course if you plan to allow for the order of selection to matter:

n! / (n-k)!

So

700! / 698!

Again, the 698! cancels and we're left with:

700 * 699 or 489,300.

Give or take.

But what this does mean is that their is two versions of most of the images released before the 27th that probably only differ by their timestamps at the bottom of the files. I wonder if anyone uploaded as attachments to the forum any of the images in the first 100 frames so we can compare them.

Yes that's all very nice and interesting but...HOLY CRAP WE'VE BEEN AT THIS FOR ALMOST A MONTH

And man, it's been a hell of a run so far! :D Keep up the good waiting, guys!

So, what I want to know is, when is TimeCon: The One True Convention?

In agreement. Plus, a convention for a single comic... How hip are we?

Cut out the parts of a post you aren't responding to, and your posts will look normal. Just a tip (it's happened before, including to me).

I didn't notice a problem. But I am sorry if everyone thought I threw a rainbow up on them. Maybe I should have gone with subtle diffs. hah. But no, I have had more fun with BBcode, so :P.

Go back and look a the post. The nesting of BBtags is somehow screwed up (I don't know the exact problem), so text that should be in quoteblocks isn't, and your user information (avatar, etc) appears below and to the right of your post.

Um, it was on purpose. It fits with the irrational ranting nature of the post that I was hoping to present.

I only had noticed an italics tag would show at the end and extra left brackets [ were showing up. No other problems that I saw when previewed or published. I'm using a non-default theme.

Ok found an upload of frame 117 from the 27th. Compared this to the current file you can download and while the image is 100% the same the data in it is encoded differently and most of the file is different. This means the image was re encoded by something/someone. Even the file sizes are different!

Orignal file:
date:create 2013-03-25T06:54:32+00:00 date:modify 2013-03-25T06:54:32+00:00
Current file:
date:create 2013-03-27T06:42:46-04:00 date:modify 2013-03-25T02:54:32-04:00

The modify time is the same but the create time has moved forward a couple of days.
Also note the Time Zone on the computer that these images were created on is different. Original file was at UTC time while the latest one is at EDT (UTC - 4 hours)

Megan has coma'd. She suffers. Will blinding, unrelenting sun cause her cancer? That's right, it wasn't breast/other-good-guess-cancer, but skin cancer. Poor Megan. Cueball is off hiding in a nice shady area, free from the cancer. Does that make him a bad man? No, of course not. Megan should know about this nice spot perfectly well, from her own visits there. Should he be helping her? No, again. She is her own person. She makes her own choices. Sometimes all people want to do is die. Slowly. From cancer... . . . . ...Yeah.ŧ

Now I wish my avatar wasn't already hatted, so I can get an official buffygirl one done. Hmm, I'll have to think on this further.

You have no idea how tempting that is ;-)

But I really like that the thread has recently evolved into rather intelligent discussions, and interesting collaborative efforts and tools.

The only thing we need now, is for Blitzgirl to show up in the comic, and then everything would be complete!

Yes, tho I mostly lurk, I've seen every Newpix/TimeFrame, I've read every post, I've waited for It.. I think I lost my Outsider persona somewhere in between... And it's still not over! I shall continue waiting for It, the continuation of the One True Comic!
