Guys. How can none of you notice that this frame is lighter <gray-scale> than any of the 894 that came before it?! Does that mean it's going to fade away? PANIC!! PANIC!

The lightening was the first thing I noticed. Is it something with how aubronwood is rendering this frame?

EDIT: The black changed from 000000 to 151515.

the loopists can't be right, if there's a loop, there's no "waiting for it".
This is probably a time transition, after this it'll fade right back into 2 weeks/months/years from now, showing the result of their journey

Suppose it will all slowly crumble down, get washed over by the sea1 and after a while Cueball and Megan come back and have a nice day at the beach, building sandcastles and having cryptic dialogues...

Yikes, you're right! Well, almost, it was the second-last newpix that was suddenly brighter.
The black pixels used to be [0, 0, 0], in the last two frames it's been [0.00392156862745098, 0.00392156862745098, 0.00392156862745098].
Not a lot of change, in fact, my Firefox shows both as #000000.

Edit: it shouldn't, though: 0.00392156862745098 == 1/255, so it should translate to #010101.

To me it looks as noticeable as the split image shown a few posts above. When I flip back and forth on the Book of Aubron it's very different. Try it in Chrome instead of Firefox?

Either way, more people than just me can notice the change. So what do you think it means?

That's a bit much... According to the pixel values inside the PNG, it should be #010101, and I'm seeing #000000 (Firefox, WIndows).

In FF it is always the same shade of black, but in IE, 895 is indeed noticeably lighter! :o
A fade out should not be the end, that would not be cool!

Edited to add a prediction:
I think that the possible lightening of the pixels may be indicative that the sun is just starting to go down, (more a contrast change than a absolute colour change). I think that the sky will begin to darken as well, and after 15-20 Newpix the scene will be a uniform dull grey. Then, from out of nowhere, LaPetite will return with various floodlights and continue building/saving the castle and the flags from the rising sea (which is Big). Or, in the cover of darkness, the Raptors will frolic in the sand leaving nothing but ominous footprints.

Yep, you're right, my bad. 5 demerits for using screen-cap vs. actual image. Grabbed the image source and spot-checked in Photoshop and confirmed the 010101.

Have you tried looking at the comic in a different browser? And flipping between the most recent frames on the Book of Aubron?

I ran a little script to check the color of the pixel 5 from the left and bottom of each newpix:

So, not a lot of change (yet), although what you see apparently depends on browser / OS / whatever.
It would indeed be a lame ending if the picture just fades out. But unless it speeds up, that might take quite a while.

Edit: note that this is on my local collection, downloaded as they appear. Randall could be retroactively change the older newpix and I'd never know.

Edit2:

Good point, also need to check the color of the sky.
Added that to my little checking script. So far, always #ffffff.

Can' see the change in Firefox at all but analyzing the pngs it seems to be uniform, all black pixels becoming 010101 pixels (rather than some proportion or whatever.

OK, thanks. Just wanted to know if there was any change at all with the latest newpix since it seems the pixels didn't get brighter this time, still at #010101.

Checked the color and yes it is confirmed. The black is now #151515. White stays at #ffffff

This is because the difference between #000000 and #010101 is not enough for the human eye to detect -- 24 bit colors give over 16 million possible colors. Estimates for the number a human can distinguish range from 100 thousand to 10 million but that includes all colors out side of the range of colors a monitor can put out. Within a monitor's color range, we can probably only distinguish 100,000 or so.

Now, I haven't done a water level update in a while, but going forward this change will mess up my algorithm, because it adds up color values and averages to figure out the approximate height. Now I will have to take the overall lighting into account if I'm to do that again.

And back to topic, yes this is a VERY interesting development. Here are my best guesses:

* Transition to night lighting (a la Drakeesh's idea)
* Lighting from some event, an explosion, maybe a lightning strike, maybe it will start raining?
* Fade to white, then fade in to new location

My favorite is the 3rd one at this point. I would love to see what C/M are up to...

Edit:
Also wanted to note that timestamps (both external and internal) haven't changed, recently. All images from the last days, including the ones with the fading, are from 22 April (for what that's worth). So, it looks like this is a deliberate change, not a side effect from re-rendering the scene.

#010101 or #151515? I'd have said "#010101", but I don't trust my own skills, anymore.
Kieryn wrote:This is because the difference between #000000 and #010101 is not enough for the human eye to detect -- 24 bit colors give over 16 million possible colors.
Actually, we are in greyscale business right now, which currently leaves us 256 different shades of grey (don't you dare to pun). Which is not really much, every photographer who has had an expensive monochrome epoch would agree. Well. Maybe. At least, I believe they would.

Do not fade away,
Oh you great One True Comic,
I miss you always,

I will always wait,
Until the end of Time, which,
Might not be too long.

Curiousity,
Will my writing in haiku,
Mean I get a hat?

I hope this is so,
Forever I have waited,
For such an honour.
The World is Waiting, Anticipating...

I don't have a good *ONG, so I'll let someone else do the honours, but the newpix is again #010101 / #ffffff, so no change. We now have four pix with these values.

Kieryn wrote:... Here are my best guesses:
* Transition to night lighting (a la Drakeesh's idea)
* Lighting from some event, an explosion, maybe a lightning strike, maybe it will start raining?
* Fade to white, then fade in to new location

Given that the new shade though brighter has been constant for 4 timeframes, it pretty much eliminates all 3 of these possibilities. I'm confused.

When Megan put the last flag onto the Tower and whispered 'bye' I was actually a bit sad.
Been some hours since they are gone.

at the Moment I'm waiting for the little Girl from pic 798,799,800 and 801 to return.

No further fading in the last ...ONG. Still 010101it seems.

edit: How do you keep track of time - newpix number that is?

PS. La Petite! Come back!

I guess I kind of got obsessed with the idea the sandcastle building and maybe the whole comic was scripted back in the 1st NP century and so I had this old experiment lying around and... well... um...

Sentiment appreciated nonetheless. I'm already married, too.
And, actually, I'm not sure what planet.

What-if the "sand" in the center castle was actually pure cesium?

Me too... Although, he might be using a deeper color range and it's actually getting brighter following a sine curve, so it accelerates after a while. It would be very interesting if it changed to #020202 soon.

From The Book of Aubron. It displays the number in the top left corner. (But adds an extra copy of the latest before it returns to 1.)
