Doesn't that mean time has slowed down? Less time passes between frames?
You are right: The frame rate sped up.
Could be. The sea¹ level rise has slowed down drastically in the last few frames as well.
This confirms the theory that the frame rate slows down when nothing is happening and speeds up again when there's activity - and that includes towers collapsing, apparently.
Too bad the fading speed is apparently related to the frames, not to Inside time.

Re: 1190: "Time"
Yes! I did it! I did it!
I've read 214 pages of the thread! This means I started at 0% and I'm now at 50%, which is the crucial point at which I realize that, yeah, I can read it all! Eventually.
Wait a minute. What the heck. My math doesn't add up...
Suppose the thread advances 11 pages daily, and I read 10.
Then, tomorrow, it'll be at page 439, and I've read up to 224. That's 51.025%
If we continue at that rate, then...
234/450=52%
244/461=52.928%
254/472=53.8%
My percentage keeps raising even though every day I'm one page more away from the end? And then...
354/582=60.82%
454/692=65.6%
554/802=69%
Isn't this some kind of paradox?
1054/1352=77.9%
1554/1902=81%
2054/2452=83.76%
This feels like the Zeno's paradox where I keep making progress but never quite reach the end.
3054/3552=85.97%
4054/4652=87.14%
5054/5752=87.86%
Yup. I'm measuring my progress wrong, and having managed to reach 50% of the thread doesn't actually mean anything.
Carry on.
(And to think it'll take me a long while still to read what is being posted now. Five new post just ninja'd me. That's scary...)

And I'm glad I wasn't the only one.

Well the existing LHC cost around $6billionµ, not counting detectors and computing, but if you assumed that cost was in fact for the SHC, and that the cost per quark accelerated were constant, then the LHC would be $9billion. I reckon it's much easier to just pop down to the Migros and buy some quark though.descor wrote:Besides being impossible to isolate a quark and all that; if you wanted a single quark I'm guessing you'd at least need your own LHC at the piffling cost of $9billion.
µGoing by the figure (in CHF, but they're pretty similar to USD) in the really interesting information booklet given out to volunteers at the 2008 open day, because it is newer and probably more thoroughly checked by more people than this page that says CHF4.6billion. It could be that there are better sources around now, but I put a fair bit of effort into finding the most reliable figures and references (which were not always the ones on wikipedia) for this and various other LHC-related things in September last year and I can't be bothered redoing that right now.
Edit: I'm not sure if the first-on-a-page PFAP rule is still observed, but I'm the pope so I say it is. I'm pope! Yay! Everyone gets cake!æ
æParticipants are expected to provide their own cake.

Nothing much to understand. Without understanding how the hashes are derived, simply knowing that they are unique (essentially random) and nearly impossible to crack, means each newpix we get a new hash and cannot guess any futurepix. The hashes are in the place of simple ordinal numbers (pic1, pic2, pic3, etc.). Main thing to note is that in our past there has been more than one pic in a Timeframe, with unique hashes too (not necessarily unique pics).
Edit to clarify: The hashes we speak of are the filenames that we get from the site's redirect of the comic (time.png) through the javascript that gets us the actual up-to-date frame.

If you read this sig, post about one arbitrary thing you did today.

Re: 1190: "Time"
Has anyone considered the possibility that Randall has a full blown animation of Time, and we are only being shown the occasional frame?
Re: 1190: "Time"
I converted the latest image to a .jpg, like someone suggested.

Now I have a problem
Do I put the original PNGs on the wiki, or do I convert the images to JPGs so they are displayed correctly?

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family Anatidae on our hands. –Douglas Adams

Originals, with a note. The transition is perceivable and that's the important thing.
