When you Google time (in a Chrome incognito window, to remove any chance of personalization), the 29th hit is ... the OTC.
(The OTT doesn't make it into the top 100, at least.)

Phew, got me a bit worried there. So La Petite is moving into the frame. Next frame will (probably) be the last frame we can see anything at all, so let's see if we can figure out what she's up to. I like the trebuchet idea.

It's not necessary for them to be opposites.
Both could be good… or evil.

I know those paradoxes could be a problem, but what I really meant was that BlitzGirl will be at the location of my post in 5 days.

@BlitzGirl: Good luck with the aforementioned paradoxes. I hope you can beat them, so you shall be known as BlitzGirl Temporal Knight and beater of paradoxes.

EDIT (April 14th): Of course "Temporal Knight" should be "Knight Temporal", but back in time when I wrote this post my knowledge of your precise title wasn't known to me.

At least I don't have to add the paradox-beater title until I actually beat a paradox. Or do I?

@BlitzGirl: It's about Time to add a title to the list, that has been laying around1 for a long time.

The last one, I'd say, without attmepting to schism the religion of the OTC would be the fully blank one, if indeed it ends now rather than beretgirl/lapetite/Blitzgirls not so evil twin doing something to continue it.

I have faith in continuance and I wait for it

First post, thatmaynoteverberead.

Left it very late to add my hello, and goodbye to the thread of time. Have watched the comic, then aubronwood, and the thread since its inception. I was in the april fools day party. and then became part of the loopist sect. My friend at work was all for some big calamity for the ending of time. I have been traveling in china, and whenever I could get internets, I would check the updates. I enjoyed waiting for blitz girl. I was there for the appearance of lapetite mort all three times.

If I could post a picture, it would be of the Chinese pronounciation chart next tome for children. It has "ONG" and a picture of a clock below it. It is very appropriate for this thread.

See you next time (2)

So… I wrote a very-short-story. See if you folks like it:
Spoiler:
For decades, the Time Waiters carefully watched Time as it progressed. They recorded it, made notes, analyzed the changes, discussed the endless possibilities. They obeyed unquestionably their commandment, “wait for it”.

But eventually, they realized the cold, hard truth: Time was endless, but not them. They tried to recruit new followers, but these couldn't understand the magnificence of their job, and failed to realize how important it was. Then, the Time Waiters decided to build a machine, so that Time didn't go by unrecorded.

But it wasn't enough. It didn't feel enough. Something was missing. And so the Time Waiters decided to turn Machine into Creature. They gave it emotions, and a name, and a body, and told it its One True Purpose; and the Creature felt honored with such a task, which it performed with excellence.

With a replacement ready, the Time Waiters knew they could now rest in peace, and so, one by one, they went. And so went Humanity, the Earth, the Sun, and the Universe. And yet, while it records its own thoughts about Time as well as Time itself, the Last Time Waiter dutifully waits for it.
Gingercat wrote:Yeah, my players just decided to sit back and watch the Nukewisp frenzy itself to Annihilation-level fire energy, THEN they killed it.
Thus ended that campaign.

Hi there. I'm yet another of the 'long time lurkers, first time participant' people. I'm also known to procrastinate a lot and turn up late very often, explaining why I took over 400 pages to get on with doing this. I read everything up until about page 200, and then sporadically from there. When I saw the fading, I thought I'd better get a move on and sign up to the forum already so I can say something before the comic (possibly) finishes. I'm really hoping it doesn't. It's been so awesome following this thing.

Forgot you don't go back in the OTT anymore :) There are some Swedish waffles as well in my edit up above.
I predict that the One True Comic will continue until the end of Time!

You did it BlitzGirl!

It's almost gone and the right-hand tower still hasn't collapsed?

So I've returned from coma, and my first post back on Newpage 433 has been approved, yay! While I started catching up, I saw, as I kind of expected (but not that many), many other first time posters that were expressing feelings similar to mine, and with sometimes very similar words. Time's fading has definitely generated a strong reaction in here.
To help non Blitzgirls, I'm quoting here all the first time posts that I encountered, from NP 433 up to NP 439 where I'm currently. Should I read other first time posts in the rest of my catching up, I'll post them when I get back to the present of the OTT.

[not a native speaker, please ignore possible incoming grammatical oddities :) ]
I remember that I started Waiting when the very first tower was almost finished, just before its crenelation (Newpix 31, Book of Geekwagon). After waiting for a half minute or so and already liking this comic although nothing happened, I came right away to this needle-pulled-thingy to understand what was going on, only to be taken to a long and amazing journey that would lead me here, a Oustide-month later, on Newpage 433. (Although I'll admit to have skipped a few posts here and there, I've been following quite thoroughly since Newpage 250-ish.)

The main reason for my de-lurking is that while I was reading CatHectic's asking for suggestions, I remembered this song from Dream Theater called "Losing Time", and after reading its lyrics I couldn't help but post it here:

[originally spoilered]
Losing Time
She dresses in black everyday
She keeps her hair simple and plain
She never wears make-up
But no one would care if she did anyway

She doesn't recall yesterday
Faces seem twisted and strange
But she always wakes up
Only to find she'd been miles away

Absence of awareness losing time
A lapse of perception losing time

Wanting to escape
She had created a way to survive
She learned to detach
From herself a behavior that kept her alive

Hope in the face of our human distress
Helps us to understand
The turbulence deep inside
That takes hold of our lives

Shame and disgrace over mental unrest
Keeps us from saving those we love
The grace within our hearts
And the sorrow in our souls

Deception of fame, vengeance of war
Lives torn apart, losing oneself
Spiraling down, feeling the walls closing in
A journey to find the answers inside our illusive mind
[/end of original spoiler]

I'd post a link to the song but I'll have to wait until 5 posts IIRC.

Anyway, I'd really like to thank you all for all the talking, the graphs, the religions, the science, the hats... it's been so much fun (and will be for many Newpixes to come I'm sure (I sure hope Time doesn't end with the fading)). I was going to try and write something more meaningful, but Lucia's and higgs-boson's posts just made up for that.

And last : I'm also worrying about BlitzGirl not giving news for so many Newpix, but let's suppose that she's just trying to Wait faster. Go BlitzGirl! *Cheer, cheer*

DrSamCarter wrote:Edited, in order to replace my original post1 with: A delay with moderation meant that I reposted and moderation didn't pick up my double post despite the second one indicating that I was reposting, and now I find that I have ninja'd myself six pages into the future. By then 12 newpix had passed and Blitzgirl had reappeared and I think the post is better placed where it ended up rather than here, so I have deleted it here so anyone trying to catch up doesn't hit it twice.

1This was meant to be my very first post, but now it has kind of ended up as my third, but in the past, which seems very apt for this needle-pulled thing. Anyone who is still confused clearly understands what is going on. :D

It does look like we are coming to an end ... unless we are fading to a new view ?
In any case, I wanted to say hello to everyone and thank-you for the great discussions !

mk_chem wrote:I've been following the OTC since its glorious beginning and the OTT for at least the last 150 newpages and i see a lot of hard work put into this thread, which makes me kind of happy, even if i'm not really part of the community right now (registered only because of the OTC). it's just awesome to see what Randall created with this thing :)

i really want to contribute something to this, because this is big (although probably not as big as the sea) and i want to be a part of it!

i hope i don't ninja anyone with this, but i wrote a matlab script that determines the height of the sea in each frame.

it takes the most right column of pixels of a frame (actually the third column from the right if you count the two pixels of the frame), "stretches" the colorspace to 255 to 0 (added this to account for fading, i wanted a simple fit with only one variable) and fits a logistig curve to the data (colorvalue over number height in image; i used a sigmoidal curve and did not round the best fit value to account for gray pixels at the sea level [so the sea could rise half a pixel if it wanted {it's the sea anyway, which DOES what it wants}]). the center point is then the height.

i just tested it, and it yielded this: a curve (tried to link to my pubilc dropbox folder, got flagged as spam... where should i upload it?)

the problem right now is that i only have the first 855 frames numbered in the fashion "TimeX.png", found them uploaded by someone to github (sorry, i forgot who was so kind to do this...).

now is there any source for all frames at once which are named with the respective number of the frame? i haven't read anything about it the last newpages, but i DO read a bit fast (to catch up quickly on the newpages, when i was outside for too long), so i could easily have overread it. when i'm back home i will download the missing frames anyway by hand and rename them, but perhaps someone has already done the work!

love this comic so much... and all y'all!

has anyone yet suggested the possibility of a closed loop?
upon a complete fade to white a simple pan out (or other transitional effect) to reveal the two sitting on the beach staring at oceanriver, making Time eternal?

I don't believe that Time will end with the Fade. The Great Lord Randall would not introduce a brand new character, LaPetite, so near the end of Time without any explanation. I think that LaPetite has more stories to tell before the end.

Also, go BlitzGirl! And go Vytron! We believe in you!

imho, if noone shows up to save the flag, then Time as we know it is really over.

Time exists! Whether the flags fall or everything fades to white or the Rheinmaidens sing again1. So long as a single .png remains somewhere Time will exist!

1The sea2 rises to the top of the frame.
2OK, incorrect, as the Rhein is a river and not the sea. My bad3.
3This is probably the longest I have ever lurked anywhere, not that being away from the internet for half of Time is an excuse.

pelrigg wrote:Okay.. so here's another noob de-cloaking (err..) delurking here at the End Of Time {no, say it ain't so}. I started looking in from time - to - Time at 1190 while it was still in the "what the" phase when I finally realized it was changing (been reading xkcd for over an outside year). I've started checking into this thread ever since and must say I've enjoyed the whole thing.
The various people have become familiar... AluisioASG; buffygirl; blitzgirl (go B-girl, go); the posters of charts and graphs and phlip (who's posts helped me gather the newpixs in the beginning before I looked at explain-wiki). The semi-off-course discussions, the haikus, the attempts to figure out the hashes. It has been fun (and thanks for the fish).
I will add that OTC has become quite a big part (not as big as the sea*) of my on-line fun (factoid: I have several more places to {haunt} saved now) and I've saved the entire run of the OTC, although I'm not sure yet what I'll do with it (them?).

Perhaps I could mention a song to go with the "Fade-out"???? (It goes with my OF** status) --- Simon & Garfunkel: "Old Friends" ---

Old Friends
Sat on their park bench
like bookends.

....

The old men
lost in their overcoats,
waiting for the sunset.

...

Can you imagine us
years from today,
sharing a park bench quietly?

----- Actually, thinking about it, after rummaging through the lyrics, pretty much the whole "Bookends" album (okay: disc) fits in with the Time motif: "Bookends Theme"; "Overs"; "Fakin' It"; "A Hazy Shade Of Winter" (excuse please there's something in my eye and I need to put something on the jukebox)

ps This is only the third time I've ever been on ANY b-board. So that's how inspiring this has been.......
