Yes of course. Now they are referenced.
But you may only read them in your post, not in mine.

Why doesn't someone just swim out and get the bottle? It's a river, so presumably freshwater, and not really that large either.

Freshwater? Not likely, possibly less salty semencoffeecancerbabies.

Added: Seems late again through the regular streaming channels; I forced the issue by checking the HTTP redirect this time, which seems rather more punctual.
P.S. In case mods read this and would like to know about specific problems, I do find that the server c.xkcd.com at 107.6.97.99 is unresponsive to HTTP requests, at least. That does mess up the redirect some of the time, when it comes up in the round robin or however it's balanced.
P.S. I am Randall, but not that Randall.

Well, presumably they are drinking it in frames 1027 and 1028. They would have complained if it was salt water (I don't know the taste of semencancerbabiescoffee, but I presume they would have spat it out to).

Huh. Glad KarMann posted the newpix, as mine isn't showing up on Time. :?

Good point - they do know how to swim. And there doesn't seem to be a dangerous current, since the dilgunnerang is just bobbing there.

Best guess at this point is that the river is made of something scarier than semencoffeecancerbabies. Something that they can ingest, but fear to swim in...?

I'm trying to figure some reason why swimming in beer would be a bad thing. Or maybe it's a higher-proof ethanol solution, and would really sting the hell out of any cuts or scrapes they might have?

I mean, it could just be that they don't want to get wet/dirty (from river sediment and stuff.) We can't tell if they're wearing swimwear, or clothes at all, so maybe they're dressed up really nicely or something.

Or maybe there's something in the water? Like, either dirty/poisoned liquid, or actual amphibians that they're trying to avoid? With the newpix, the rope does seem to have fallen slack in a rather disturbing manner.

Also, I'm told there is some hat-related tradition here. I like hats.

Bytes - here's what we've got so far:

Spoiler:
ChronosDragon wrote:All this drinking got me thinking. The OTC would make an excellent drinking game! To be played while watching back, of course - over several days/weeks it would hardly be much of a drinking game!

- Drink every time a character in the OTC drinks from a body of liquid
- Drink every time a structure is destroyed
- Drink again if it was by the sea1
- Small drink for every time M & C say something about the river
- Big drink for every time M & C say something about the sea
- When a character reenters the frame after being away, drink in relief
- When Cueball looks at the Fourth Wall, drink in encouragement
- When LaPetite appears, finish the glass

Can you do it? :D
What's that? Will I try? Of course not, I'm below the US drinking age ;)

1Which is big

yappobiscuits wrote:Expanding on that, there could even be an OTT drinking game!

-Drink every -ONG
-Drink again if someone else does it and gets ninja'd
-Drink every time someone is issued with a fabulous hat
-Drink every time the sizes of the river (small) and the sea (big) are mentioned
-Drink for every song parody
-Finish your drink when someone arrives in the present after blitzing

(any more suggestions?)

As for hat-related traditions, Selcouth, it helps to have a traditional avatar first - onto which a hat is later added (generally by the Great Milliner buffygirl, who I believe is quite swamped at the moment, but who might be open again for business later, Randall willing).

Hey! What make you think that they know how to swim? Have you seen them swim? They have been in the water, yes, but that is not swimming.

And why do you think they are drinking from the river1. They are sitting by the river and squeezing liquid from Cueballs old sock2 as far as I can see!

[EDIT] Though I am a bit worried about how they will be able to continue with their quest if they don't dare to enter the river of floating otternoses or whatever.

2) Which is big

jupo wrote:Ohmygerd. I did it - I finally reached the end. Well, not the End end, like the End of Time, but the Now-End, like I finally caught up to the current end of the thread after more than a week of trying. What a rush - now I can watch Time in realtime! And the thread too!

Wait, why is that so exciting? What have you people done to me???

Wow! I don't remember seeing you BlitzGirling*, but congrats! From my frame of reference you just caught up!

RobIrr wrote:It crossed my mind that signatures could be considered a form of time travel; at least in the view of those such as Blitzgirl and Vytron (who already touched upon this) and those others still on the quest to catch up on the thread. They get fascinating glimpses of the future as-it-is-to-them when they read our old posts but see the new sigs...

We could even send them messages... crumbs...

"Beware The Poles" !

Ahh, so this is the post that started it all. And I'm mentioned in it! That's kind of... neat! It's like, someone from the future gives you a plan of a time machine and you discover your name appears in it, because, you will-had done something in the future-past related to it.

macraw83 wrote:Hmm... What if we added one of their time capsule messages to our sigs? Would that technically be them looking into their own future, or their past?

The future.

My brain may be tricking me into thinking that I'm writing this now, but clearly, I'm in April 10. This post has a time stamp of May 2. The future, unambiguously.

Thinking I'm posting this in my present is an Outsider Illusion, the truth is, this message doesn't exist until I catch up to it (that's why catching it is important). Though, from your frame of reference, I'm posting it now (but it'll be forever in the past after you read it - so much, that when I actually read it, it'll be my past too, because I'll read it at a much later time.)

macraw83 wrote:And on that note, what if we quoted them on something they might eventually say? They might have to say it eventually just to fulfill the prophecy (assuming that's what it even is).

That would be risky. What if you quote me posting something I never say? That could get paradoxical quickly.

Exodies wrote:Ha hahaha

She is reading it properly isn't she?

Phew! I'm glad she will-had done all that! I don't have time to listen/watch all those Youtube Videos and very interesting looking pages (no matter how cool those TVTropes's titles sound), my Bookmarks are growing fast, but, before Time I already had 8000 links to read at a later date, so this is not that abnormal. I'll just keep adding links, like this one:

Oh, that's an interesting looking web site. Thanks for the tip Karmann, I'll add it to my bookmarks for later

Word.

Now that I think of it, perhaps it's Outsider-thinking to acknowledge the existence of comics past 1190. They don't exist, and never will, unless 1190 ends. In such case comics beyond 1190 would be read every newpix until catching up to Outsider-thinking (what they'd call "the most recent xkcd comic released").

Otherwise, this would be considered Randal's Magnum Opus, his greatest comic, and the last one. One that lasted forever.

- Past Events -

Just witnessed the Cardinalship of descor. Oh, so that's how it happened! I also got to see the hats on the people's avatars (they've always been there, I just noticed) that seem related to Religious Positions as depicted on people's signatures.

I'm also worried about Helper, our Pope. Did xey** really go MIA? Will-had xey** appear in one of the pages I have yet to read/have read***. Will-had we an Interim pope in the meantime? Etc.

Registration required to view article.

Registration is free and painless and prolly of interest to most TimeWaiters and deviants thereof.

Wait for it, signing up to read newscientist is free?! There have been several articles I wanted to read from them, and for some reason I had the idea that registering wasn't free. Oh well, there's no time to read them anymore, anyway...

@lmjb1964's sig: 8-)

Do we have a standard for that? Do we have competing standards yet?

I propose the following definitions:

Time Traveler: That which reads messages sent through time (from the future to the past) via signatures of people in the present, or by other means (like edited posts with such messages.) Arguably, the Time Travelers are static and the messages are the ones traveling towards them.

1Treking: The action of reading all missed pages of the One True Thread, being lost in the past, trying to catch up with the present. Requires reading more than is missed, so that there's an eventual catch-up (not the be confused with trekking).

*Blitzgirling: Posting reports of treking1, so that the experience is shared with people interested in the trek. Probably requires posting progress so it is known how much one is behind. If your first post in the thread is "hey guys, I've read all the pages!", you're probably doing it wrong.

Finally, I've been reading a lot about gender-neutral pronouns, and I'm sick of it, so I'll put an end to it: I'll be using from now on they/their/them, but since they sound so plural, their singular version changes the th to a x. **xey/xeir/xem look like perfect gender neutral to me. Don't have to deal with "why zir and not zes?" stuff. Who knows, maybe it'll catch on.

Sadly, there doesn't seem a perfect replacement to "you guys", ya'll will still have to do for this.

Page 287/498 - 211 pages behind (treking since 9 pages ago) - 192 pages till Postplosion

Heretic I guess. Though we have those hats that are older than Time itself - The Ortodox heretics - which are forgiven due to their ancient heritage. And then we have those that just didn't know better - The Savages - for which salvation is still possible. Then we have those hatmakers that deliberately broke the covenant - The members of the Freehatters (like myself) - that are surely destined for the Chocolate and Liquorice fate... :(
The past is full of traps, charms and mirages, but if you just keep up with with what you are doing it will all be fine.

I'm just curious, is the HalfThousandthPage (HTP?) going to be a recognised event in here?

Sure, why not - you would not be replacing an already buffy-hatted avatar, and so it is really is out of my jurisdiction. Go for it!
you know BlitzGirl created that comic, right? Better change my sig to reflect that.

I had not realized that at the time ('s what I get for being stuck so far in the past). I continued not realizing until I reached the actual creation post, at which point I geeked out again and sent BlitzGirl a similar request.

But I will take your approval as a good sign. Hopefully BlitzGirl agrees too (I should find out soon! Almost there!)

Congrats on reaching your first signpost!
(It is worth noting that we have close to 20,000 posts in this thread, so really, 150 quotes isn't too bad. :D )

Yay, a mention from BlitzGirl! Good point about the quotes percentage. Estimating roughly 200 quotes (by the time I catch up with you guys)/20,000 posts = 0.01 = 1% of posts. That's surprisingly low.

Disclaimer: I really, really wanted to fit as many posters as possible in here but my wrist is already limp as a noodle! I tried to mostly stay with still-active people since they're the ones most likely to see it. But there were still way, way too many for even a dozen of these! I still love you all equally, I promise!!
List of those I included:

Hope you enjoy! It was a lot of fun to make. :D One of the reasons I'm happy to be in the Now is that I can do things like this, where in the Past I was too busy Questing, reading pastposts, and writing signposts!

HOLY FRICK. You made this? What epic win. What epic win. Same request I made BuffyGirl a signpost or two ago: please can I have permission from your Blitzness to use one of the frames as an avatar? Pretty please with a cherry on top?

Still geeking out every time I see that image  I might want to put a poster of it on my wall eventually... if you're good with that, ofc.

As soon as I saw the collage, I wanted a poster of it :D

ikr?? It's practically required for something that epic! Must not be restrained to the Interwebs!

I've been up all night. I'm drained and I'm not seeing or thinking clearly. But I am still geeking out every time that image gets a mention.

I wasn't sure who was all still trekking, since I passed various signposts on my way here. (Kryton, Vytron, and one or two others.) But I stand corrected.

Hi. I've been reading this thread off and on for sometime now. I love the hats and the filks. Congratulations Blitzgirl and best wishes to Vytron. You both are inspiring. In fact, all those who have travelled and who are travelling through Time have inspired me to do it myself (what a big copy-cat I am). I started last night and got to page 9. I'll post every 50 pages.
Bye. :D

Pffft, this comic has jumped the shark, stifled the spark, mutated the quark, de-feathered the lark, paved over the park, silenced the snark, and ignored the hark, and it's done that since Newframe #1...

And yet we STILL Wait For It...

Where's the REAL joke in this comic ? ? ? :D

Not a problem re: first posts. I figured since you weren't back in the Past anymore I should bring forward whatever gems I found suitable. And so I did. I'm glad you saw them.

pelrigg wrote:(plus looking at your post I'm seeing how some of the other thingies are done. Like you noticed, looking at someone else's post is a great way to see how stuff is done. Different smilies, font sizes, colors, etc. can all be pulled apart and put back together again if you look closely enough. And you can always ask, like you did earlier.

Take your time with the simple stitches! After all, the commandment was Wait for It. So, wait until you're ready, then go have fun with the embroidery.

Morse/Rot13? Fine, I got this. Somebody else please throw these back in time for the other Blitzers? Don't think I can survive another round with whatever Sheeple are left back there. Not until I coma.
