Makes sense. The sea is rising to meet the rivers because it couldn't wait for the river (the one that hasn't reached the sea yet, and is small, not the dangerous one they're standing next to) to come to it. Someone needs to tell the sea to

I'm easy come, easy go. Little high little low.
Even if the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me...to me.

Megan. Just just slipped again.
Dropped my bottle, oh dear me.
Now it's floating out to sea.
And Megan. Our walk had just begun.
And now it floating all away.
Megan, ooo
Didn't mean to make you cry.
If we get back home again tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters.

Too late. Our Time has come
Sends shivers down my spine.
Ocean's rising all the time.
Goodbye to our castle - We've got to go.
Gotta leave it all behind and find the truth.

So you think we can roam free and wander outside?
So you think we can leave here and then become wise?
Oh baby - just come now with me baby
Just gotta get out - just gotta get right outta here

Ooh yeah, ooh yeah.
Nothing really matters
Anyone can see

So... awesome.....

Seriously, that is really impressive. I could hear Freddie Mercury singing it in my head, with instruments and everything.
Oh no, you just broke the rest of the page. You need to move the opening spoiler-tag as I did now.
Time. The final frontier. These are the voyages of Cueball and Megan. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.

jetpac, can you please fix your post? It breaks the forum.
You have the following structure:

Code: Select all

which is a bad boo-boo.

Edit: ninja'd by NoMouse, but I'll leave it up since it contains extra info.

The sea rises to meet the river so much faster - Aww! That's romantic!

Or maybe Randall is running the longest shaggy-dog joke in history, with the final gag a pun on "Unchained Melody"?

I've been wondering how long I'd keep from registering in the forum, and of course it'd be this comment that does it. The moment you bring up an incorrect latin translation of an error message into an XKCD thread, my fate is sealed.

error occuravit. volasne dicere microsofti huius?

missionem proficiebam.

In other news, hello all. Good work on making the accompanying thread for this insane comic more maddening than the comic itself.

Has anyone yet brought up the fact that Randall dramatically reeled us in to the storyline by keeping the characters silent for the majority of the animation, and then suddenly creating an increasingly complicated plot a few hundred frames in? Very clever, that Mr. Munroe.

Bringing this out of the moderated ether during my morning mini-blitz

This is the first time that the word "wait" has appeared in the dialog, right? When the congregation is doing the litany, there should be an audible gasp or something at that point.

I have a solution for you: the Newpix Convertor!

Install GreaseMonkey or equivalent if you didn't already (it works at least on Firefox's GreaseMonkey and on Chrome's TamperMonkey), then install this user script.

Then, the date will turn into this: Image.

Tremendously useful.

Makes it so much easier to check back to see comments on a particular frame :-)

The original post was not that exciting, nor is the poster. You managed to cover the general gist of the post anyway, I am sure he would not be offended by the lack of credit.

You asked for it, you got it... Here is the list of all occurancies of

Code: Select all

in the OTT up to post 19440. Beware, they are - of course - all spoilers! And they are based on my old database, so maybe there are some false positives in there. I did not want to scrape the poor old forum server again.

Edited for direct link search (img-tags), not really much shorter, ordered by user.
When responding (for reporting defusion or false positives) please do not quote the list to avoid further spoilers.
Further Edit: Removed false positives (properly spoilered image links and escaped links). If you still find yourself on this list, chances are it points to a real spoiler and you should edit your post by either deleting the image or spoiler it, announcing what lurks behind the Spoiler tag.

Did it to page 336! 179 pages behind!

I was introduced to this comic, from before Time existed:

http://xkcd.com/1017/

Which means I'm on my quest to reach the Big Bang! Time traveling to the past as well.

Currently at: 3673 BC

Otzi, Sumerian language, Minoans, silk, pottery, copper, bronze, dams, harps, Mayan day zero

Passed through 5 BlitzGirl BlitzGirls:

247 at 315
254 at 320
259 at 324

Here, BlitzGirl reaches another SignPost: 149 at 259

BlitzGirl becomes Knight Temporal! She also posts her own Content worth replay.

267 at 325 - SignPost: 173 at 267

MILESTONE: BlitzGirl catches up with herself, to the past-self that caught up with the comments on the first ever frame that she watched! This is like when I caught up to my first post on the thread, because I posted it at around the time I had caught up with the first frame that I saw (back when we didn't know what Time was about.)

BlitzGirl reads ```~~~~**~*~!Whirly whirly time ripple!~*~**~~~~```` stuff left behind by cmyk that I had already read and was wondering if BlitzGirl had missed or something.

271 at 330 pages.

BlitzGirl wrote:And then this:

HAL9000 gets his monolith hat (he even gets two of them!)

azule, also a fellow time traveler (as xey caught up yet?) reaches post 100. Edits it to communicate with BlitzGirl.

Flado & lmjb1964 catch up to the present! also, freak post!

Please don't do that. You're not linking to the current newpix, but to a URL that always points to the latest frame.
This confuses people who read this an hour or more later (like BlitzGirl); and also causes extra load on c.xkcd.org for every refresh of this forum page, which already has trouble keeping up.
You should link directly to the newpix URL

Oh well, too late. Also, was spoiled by StratPlayer quoting present picture. There was dialog two time frames ago. Oh my! Are the sandcastles destroyed in the future?? D: <- Leave it ambiguous!

BlitzGirl gets a progress graph:

Spoiler:

Along the bottom is the Page she gave us the honor of reporting to us here and the other axis is her percentage progress to her goal. The Goal post is constantly moving making her achievement so much harder and therefore much more glorious when she achieves it. Which we know she already has. As we know she is reading these words now. Only it's her future self reading them. Just Wait for it and it will happen.

Image

Nice graph!

And yet it is concerning that she is appears to asymptotically approach the "Now" -- perhaps, like Zeno, she will never intersect with us in the present, but shall only reach an approximation of "now" that is outside our own universe?

Yes that is a bit concerning. Also you may note the ever increasing regularity of her posts. If this trend continues, which I'm sure it will, then eventually she will reach hard limit of 40 posts per page. From that point on there will be nothing but BlitzGirl! If this is good or bad may be decided by future historians.

Oh, that's true, that's why I've been finding BlitzGirl's SignPosts more frequently. Percentage of progress means nothing but I think one is safe as long as one can trek!

Ok I've got some really bad news!

By my calculation based on the regularity of BlitzGirls updates I've found we will reach Blitzgirl Threodological Singularity around page 372!

BlitzGirl will both be our savior and our destroyer!

Image

Wait, what? Oh yeah! I can now calculate how long it'll take me to catch up with the present! If things get repeated every day:

I reach the present in 9 days. But that's the current present, at page 515. By then, 135 pages will have been added to the thread.

Wait, is that so?? That's bonkers!

It takes me a week to catch up to that. By then, 105 more pages have been posted.

I... must be doing something wrong...

Oh yeah, I don't need division and multiplication for this. If, no matter what happens, my pages to read decrease by 20, I'll catch up in 9 days, but that'll be to whatever page it is we're on! Which would be page 650, indeed.

So the present is at page 650! Wow! From my perspective, all the posts by ya'll are actually being posted in the past too. The true present hasn't happened yet, and the future begins at page 651, which by then, will have me posting with ya'll.

Welp, I can't catch faster, unless, heh, activity drops a lot, but then, I'd have nothing to read!

Today's trek is over.

It has already been done. I wasn't able to find the original post or poster, but this is what it looks like (based on the path that Cueball and Megan have walked).

The original post was not that exciting, nor is the poster. You managed to cover the general gist of the post anyway, I am sure he would not be offended by the lack of credit.

I hope they go more new places so we can see more of the land that surrounds them.

Peculiarly harsh.

It was me. I was just making a self-deprecation joke.

In all seriousness though, I love using what little abilities I have in GIMP to provide an interesting look on the OTC. I may have to look through the frames this weekend and see what data I can gleam from them.

Yeah, that's because you are sneaky! :) Escaping those tags... Not many of such pitfalls around, so I can live with that instead of rewriting my algorithm.

Every time they stare at us it makes me thinking they're talking about us again. The thread is still rising. It's strange, comics form to create the thread, maybe the thread couldn't wait (for the comic). Still works pretty well.

Also, thanks for the song links buffygirl, they were pleasant.

Always so far behind. It would be nice if a bot could create summaries or extract threads of conversation by topic/style... how are summary algorithms these days, and could they handle something like a forum thread?

don't you think it's time for something new now?

Time. The final frontier. These are the voyages of Cueball and Megan. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.
