And... current again!

Replies from the Ketchup Blitz. And I tried to keep the snips and replies short, but sorry if I should have spoilerized more...

At the levee?

I was just waiting for this. WP. (Also: this reminds me, I propose you be given the title of Witmaster. Although I don't have exact numbers, I'd swear you have more wikiquotes than anyone else, and most of those were humor.)

Well, thank you for your title suggestion, and I'm glad that someone appreciates my sense of humor (so with my wife, that makes a total of... one person). But frankly, I'd feel a little presumptious assuming such a title. I mean there are so many Waiters in this thread with tremendous wit, wisdom, and insight, not to mention a sense of humor.

Plus, as far as my replies all being humor, I'd postulate that ALL the replies in this thread are humorous at some level. Even the ones that are stone-faced "serious" analysis are humorous to me, simply because they're occuring in a long drawn-out discussion over a web comic, so I find that the analysis gets coated with a certain layer of absurdity, no matter how intellectually stimulating and insightful the content of the post is.

Living not far from Lake Michigan, I've found myself thinking that it might be a potential setting for the OTC, but M&C have mentioned "seas" and "rivers" but never a "lake".

True. It's a little like having slipped past the event horizon of a black hole -- things are a little... different here. But of course raptors can wear hats. At least the dapper-raptors can.

I see this current period as another type of fade-out. Randall hasn't recycled any any important technique of transition so far.

I think blitzgirling is fine for the verb; the only person I demand UpperCamelCase from is myself, writing my own name. And yeah, "blitzing" is used more these days for the quick ketchup, at least from what I've seen. But both terms make me squee just a little inside. :D

Your BBtag order is messed up. You should have {spoiler, quote, quote} after the excerpt from slashdot, where you instead have {quote, spoiler, quote}.

When reaching this river they saw its size.
Then they went upstream of this river and discovered that it was in fact only a branch of a larger river which is dividing into a sort of delta. This explains the "Oh. This river is even bigger than it looked" from Megan when she discovered that the river was just a branch of a bigger river.

We can only see the second branch of the river few Newpix after because we are only seeing the crosscut of the world located near the feets of Cuegan. Megan can see far ahead of us and saw the branch earlier than us.

I bet that Megan was pointing at the point where the two branch merges. And we will see that happen in few Newpix.

You nailed it. The comic has not been zooming out these past few frames. Instead, Cuegan are walking upstream and the further upstream they go, the closer they get to the point where this branch and the adjacent branch merge.

I'm kind of confused as to why Randall decided to make a really long comic strip in 2D space to tell us about a story where 3D space is (apparently) critical to the storytelling. It's like he's punishing himself...or us.

I was getting a bit confused for a while, myself, especially about all the (unresolved?) talk about camera angles and whether we were in the sea watching them, or watching them from the shore. I was in mad OTKetchup mode at one point, and missed the subtleties of the "fake loop" where they took a rest facing the sea, and continued on their journey. If we postulate that the Sea1 is to the east, and the camera faces north, and postulating movement in straight perpendicular lines (though it's probably not particularly accurate), then Cuegan travel north, as the camera follows them from the Sea2 (facing west). When they reach River23, they turn west (camera facing south), to follow River24 up to a potential Chevy Mr. Prefect. Now we see them and an island and two branches of the large5 River27 (with the camera alternating facing west and facing south).
This is also verified by the fact that Cuegan faces us (well, Megan at least) when she says it's still rising, referring to the Sea8.

8 - impatient9 to meet River10
9 - unverified
10 - small

Excellent animation! Nice work!

I would not say that you were "wearing" that hat. That is just so not the correct word. Stratplayer, styling a, strutting with, dancing under an ultra-mod BuffyGirl chapau ....

ChronosDragon's animation is precisely what I was thinking. Either reading my mind or ... never mind, that's what it was, and well done.

i re-read the interview with randall from six years ago, and one answer stuck out to me:

I think the minimalism is an important part of the style, but I'm going to have fun injecting random visual ideas and breaking the pattern from time to time. I like having the future be an unknown. It depresses me the way you know exactly what to expect from newspaper strips like Garfield. Maybe one day we'll wake up and xkcd will be something entirely different.

i think that's what the OTC incorporates: he's breaking the pattern, something like this has never before been attempted (at least not that i know of), the future is unknown (over 1000 newpix into the OTC, over 500 pages into the OTT, and we still don't know how this is going to end, or when, or if at all, and what's going to happen until then). randall really nailed it.

edited because Time flies.

Just want to add my kudos for ChronosDragon's animation. I had already started something similar, but much simpler (no animation or 3-D rendering, just a stack of skewed layers), and it would never have compared to yours.
P.S. I am Randall, but not that Randall.

Spoiler:
There once was a little firefox named Ffoxy. Ffoxy dreamed of one day going to the beach. Why the beach? For the sand. Ffoxy, like all firefoxes soon after birth, had his tail lit, for warmth and protection. With his beautiful, flaming tail, Ffoxy wanted to dance with the golden sand. Jumping and rolling on the shore, but never near the water.

One day, a strange bald man and a skinny woman came across Ffoxy playing on a grassy hill. They seemed frightened, at first, but Ffoxy did nothing but yip and laugh. Soon they were a group. The bald man decided it would be a good idea to travel to a remote beach to waste some time and have some fun. Ffoxy got to come along.

It was a wonderful beach. So much sand, with so much of it far from the dangerous water. Ffoxy played happily a great distance from the sea, which was big, while the bald man and skinny woman built sand castles.

Ffoxy was dazzled by the sand. Dipping his tail into the land, it created a pool of molten silica. Removing the flame and allowing the pool to solidify, Ffoxy knocked more sand into the hole with his paw, then dipped his tail in again. He was having fun creating larger and larger shapes.

The bald man came over to watch. He was quite stricken with the skill this little firefox was exhibiting. He wondered if Ffoxy could make complex shapes. They were building castles, a flag would be nice. Ffoxy was eager to try. Dashing his tail around like a paint brush, Ffoxy tried his hardest and managed to make a nice, long pole. The bald man was impressed but left to go work on the castles some more.

Ffoxy continued to try some shapes he'd seen, swiping his tail around with the skill of a carver. Soon, the skinny woman came to see Ffoxy. The bald man had told her what he could do and she wanted to see. Ffoxy tried again, this time making a flag shape. She was impressed. She encouraged him to keep trying while she stayed near building more shapes of her own in the sand.

After many moments of praise Ffoxy was finally shaping fully the flag with pole. Such glee on both their faces. The skinny woman took the nice flags to their beautifully shaped castles. Ffoxy laid down, really happy, yet sleepy. He snoozed with the warmth of his tail and the warmth of sun.

Ffoxy had a wonderful day at the beach.

So I haven't been around (lurking) in the thread for about 200 newpix, and wow, the changes. Interesting to do after watching the comic closely for weeks, to see it surge so far, and it seems so sudden, although it really hasn't changed pace, right?

Conversation can be conducted without dialog. Shrug, point?, shrug or nod or shake head, grok, walk on. When two minds are in tune and clicking together, understanding is.

I do not have a gork relationship with bbcode.

The scene was made in about 5 minutes in Maya (student version - I'm much too cheap to actually have the real version). I then spent 5 more minutes figuring out how to make one solid cut out of another (to get the nice smooth edge animation) and 5 minutes getting it all to animate. Then I batch rendered and strung the images together in photoshop. A real kludge job, but it got the job done :D

The Jargon File also discusses this issue.

It's a good job there are no official rules of English. Half the Internet would disappear.
