Just turn up wearing a hat.

Because nobody wears hats in the real world. Especially at weddings.

It is very nice. I too like the hat being the Avatar. I stared at it convinced that the spiral images were derived from the avatar as well. But, I can't make that work, so I now think not.

Whenever I see that ^ phrase for some reason this Johhny Cash song comes to mind
Spoiler:
"I've Been Everywhere" (with apologies)

1
"Ninjas Are Everywhere"

I was totin' my pack along the dusty time drenched road,
When along came a couple with a high an' bag-covered load.
"If you're goin' to biggest hills, Mack, with us you can walk."
And so I clambered along side them and then I settled down in stride.
They asked me if I'd seen a place with so many sneaks and such.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"

[Chorus:]
Ninjas are everywhere, man.
Ninjas are everywhere, man.
Out in the desert's bare, man.
In the cool mountain air, man.
On my travels I've seen my share, man.
Ninjas are everywhere.

Ninjas been to:
Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma,
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo,
Tocapillo, Baranquilla, and Perdilla, they're a killer.

[Chorus]

Ninjas been to:
Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,
Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana,
Monterey, Faraday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa,
Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa,
Tennessee to Tennesse Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake, for Time's sake.

[Chorus]

Ninjas been to:
Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Ombabika,
Schefferville, Jacksonville, Waterville, Costa Rica,
Pittsfield, Springfield, Bakersfield, Shreveport,
Hackensack, Cadillac, Fond du Lac, Davenport,
Idaho, Jellico, Argentina, Diamantina,
Pasadena, Catalina, see what I mean-a.

[Chorus]

Ninjas been to:
Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Gravelbourg, Colorado,
Ellensburg, Rexburg, Vicksburg, Eldorado,
Larimore, Admore, Haverstraw, Chatanika,
Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska, Opelika,
Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City,
Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity.

[Chorus]

1be gentle, this is the first time I've done something like this. (Yes I know, I didn't change much)
Edit changed "ninja's" to "ninjas"; see below. Thanks for the input.

Like I said, "First attempt" (actually second, ran out of steam, couldn't remember all the words) and all. Not an expert like some of the others around here. stratplayer, looking at you.... Catchy tune though. And everyone can sing with the Man In Black and sound good.

It sure is! Good catch. Higgs will be jealous.

BTW, I was surprised that the "Random" Other comic didn't cause a chorus of "See, it isn't a hash, it's random." To which I could reply that Randall's idea of random is clearly in decimal rather than hex. So, it must be a hash. /flamebait

It's fine to edit earlier posts; a clue as to what and why is usually appreciated. If you edit a post that has had no posts posted after it, no evidence is (officially) left behind, and you can get away with sneaking it in. But if somebody has posted another post in the interim, there will be a note on your post "edited by ... on... edited x times in all" or somesuch.

Mods can edit your posts too. I don't know if they can do it without leaving a trace.

Data updated. Also:

Cleaned up the token database. I'm now filtering out all the most common words based on a couple of common word lists I did before.

Also words with non-alpha chars are not included.

This has speeded up the user profile pages quite a bit, but they could still be better.

The user profile Top words have now become Notable, because in addition to the filtering, I've also been measuring user word frequency vs thread background frequency. Only words with at least 5 times higher frequency for the user than background appear here now.

Also new feature (requested by Latent22): http://xkcd-time.kieryn.com/Default/For ... ct?np=1000

You're welcome, Wait Watchers1.

Might be a crosspost, but it's slow.
The previously mentioned random book had reviews on Amazon....

Spoiler:

J. M. Powers creates an enthalling story in which she brings to life her characters, her plot and her setting. ”
princess | 53 reviewers made a similar statement

Once you've read it from start to finish, you can go back and read it in a different order, and it will make just as much sense as your original read! ”
Bob The Frog | 47 reviewers made a similar statement

The book is too hard to follow, the author randomly shifts from one number to another without any prior warning. ”
pontifex | 10 reviewers made a similar statement

Thought it worth sharing, since we have had lots of discussions of hash and random...

Add:: And "Customers Who Viewed This Item Also Viewed" includes Uranium Ore (low rads) and Canned Unicorn Meat.

Wow, that's looking good over there, and I'm sure the folks who love to data-mine will REALLY love it. It's seems you're having a good time with it too.

Thank you. Charting the number of posts per user (in order of most to least) is a great demonstration of a Pareto distribution (power law curve.) Roughly
1-10 more than 320 posts
1-100 more than 50
101-200 more than 21
201-300 more than 10
301-400 more than 5
401-500 more than 3
501-600 more than 2
601-1123 1

It makes me wonder if the "hash" values are from the same book, but translated to hex...

I keep thinking about this. But the more I do, I think that if Randall has left us a puzzle, which I'm inclined to think he has, then given the intricate nature of the unfolding story it's more likely the clues/solution will be less 'techy' than that. It's my belief that hashes are there to be deliberately indecipherable. However, if someone wants to do an exhaustive sha256 search of various sequences of digits from that book to see if they can hit any of the image hashes then I have no objections.

This is... awesome! Thanks for doing all this! (How would your program handle this post - I am "quoting" you, but summarizing)? I also notice that only first-quotes seem to be counted. For example, the 21,440th utterance of this thread (this post) I started out quoting HAL9000 (which is acknowledged), but subsequently also quoted katacombe and "VoronX, speaking from more or less the present", neither of which is mentioned in the relevant Kieryn anthology page. Perhaps there should also be some break-character in a person's utterance block to indicate where interleaved quotes lie.

Of my notable nouns, ota (OTA = One True Author) appears. Perhaps OTx initialisms (and GLR) need special treatment. Also, in my profile, spake is listed as a noun; it should be a verb (so and so spake, or so and so did speak). How do you determine the grammatical function of a word? You're doing quite well for a tricky problem - I'm surprised you get this far! (Though knowing the caliber of the people in this thread, I probably shouldn't be surprised.)

re is listed as a noun. Is that because it often starts a sentence?

What are the numbers after the words? (I'm guessing excess over thread average)
