Chaotic Pile of Ketchup (vol 17)

Spoiler:
Image

"Fries anyone? Ketchup crash snarls traffic in Nevada"

An on-going series of replies to past-posts as I struggle to finally ketchup. I'm now 13 NPs in the past. The Outside has put quite a bit of pressure on me this week wipx, but I never would have thought on [heresy]Tuesday[/heresy] that I would put together 17 ketchup posts and still be trapped in the past. I suppose I could just skim through the remaining NewPages and not reply to every post that I think merits a response, but I'd much rather read it all because there's always so much great stuff that deserves attention and feedback.

As JeanLuc would say to his seamstress, "Make it sew!"

Maybe I'm just tired, but I first read that "sew" as sounding like "sue" and it didn't make any damn sense... Maybe that's what JeanLuc said to his lawyer? Or what JeannyLucCash named his boy? At any rate, "Thanks!" again to kenmelken for all your hard wikiwork!

TheMinim wrote:Does anyone have a list of the Knights Temporal?

I don't think we've ever collected a full list. I was one of the first self-declarers back HERE on NewPage 295 (and I see it's also the page with my "Soilant Black is Pixels!" line, one of my personal favorites). My self-naming ("Sir Vincent, Lord Of Nominal Goodness, Defender Of Newpix Glory -- aka Sir Vinnie LONGDONG") led to HAL9000 and I mutually knighting each other and a quick breakaway from the formal religions of Time. And I think it would be great to have a full roster of members.

I believe you've said before that Randall will unlikely ever say anything about the OTC. So perhaps it is our task to explain it to the rest of the outside... maybe we actually know more about the why of the OTC than Randall does? Maybe...

we are all Randall?!!!

Or maybe he wants us to choose his successor when he dies/retires/transcends this plane of existence and transforms into a being of pure mathematics. We've already had practice as a papal conclave, after all.

So like, you're saying the OTT is actually a big tour of the chocolate factory?

charlie_grumbles wrote:That reminds me of a story. [story]It turns out that in a remote tribe in some remote country wives were known as squaws (I have to be careful here to avoid racist overtones, I know). A young gentleman wanted to marry so he goes to another man who has three unmarried daughters. Each of them is sitting on the hide of an animal. One on the hide of a polar bear, one on the hide of a moply (of course) and one on the hide of a hippopotamus.

In this culture there is a bride price, so the man asks the father of the daughters what is the bride price of each. The first daughter has a bride price of 1000 shells. The second 2000 shells and the third 3000. So it is true that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sum of the squaws of the other two hides.
[/story]

Brilliant! I laughed and groaned and mostly wished that I had said it myself. :D :P

...and that's the end of volume 17. And I'm still 13 NPs away...

WikiQuest Time
I think this snake encounter is most certainly its own distinct period, which means what has been referred to as the "Eighth Journey Period" (which I propose renaming "Into the Mountains") ended at 1725. I will update things accordingly...

As for this new current period, I propose simply naming it after Cueball's exclamation, "Snake!" :P

I now have a regular static jpeg, of an image suitable for the mileu, which will also make the next avatar collage quasi-recursive. (It would require a special dispensation from Scisitor to make it fully recursive, by anticipating that I update my avatar to the new collage simultaneous with its creation.)

You don't get an Erdős number just because your Pa has one. However, if you have also published with him then yours is no higher than (Papa's) + 1. Possibly lower if you have published elsewhere. Note that it doesn't require publishing in mathematics. It has been generalized to (at least) other related fields (CS).

Note that Erdős was special in that, at the time, joint publishing in math was very rare (VERY). And he had many many joint publications. So, quite a lot of us have Erdős numbers. If memory serves (rarely, these days), I may have met him once in graduate school. The memory is quite vague, however.

Good point. People own cats (or at least think they do!). Note however, that if the sea does something, you, as the new owner, are responsible.

"In bocca de lupo" is what they say backstage (in Italian Opera, anyway) prior to starting the show. It is the equivalent of the US "Break a leg". There is a response: "Crepe il lupo" (May the wolf choke!)

Really? I had always assumed that your tag line was a Dirk Gently reference. FWIW, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul is a much better book, IMHO. If you're only going to read one Dirk Gently book, that should be it. (I don't think you'd lose anything by reading Tea-Time before Detective Agency, if you decided to read both.)

Nope -- if it's a series, I have to read them in order. So now I have to read both.

And funny thing -- when I saw your "Tom Robbins," I first thought of Tony Robbins, who I don't think wrote any songs either, unless a chorus of "Ow, ooh, ow, ooh, owwww!" during firewalking events counts as songwriting... :P

Time to find out, time to take some bags and go
Are there more rivers? Well they just don't know
The River's small, the Sea is so Big
They'll never suss it out, if all they do is dig
I'm waiting for my ONG

Now comes the Fading, looks like the End
And LaPetite -- is she foe or friend?
Does the Sea end? They haven't walked far
And does even Megan know just where they are?
I'm waiting for my ONG

I'm waiting on the sand
Tiny trebuchet in my hand
I'm waiting here, I'm in such a state
So someone tell me -- how long must I Wait?
I'm waiting for my ONG

Excellent job, PartingLance! And given how addicted we all are to the OTC and the OTT, the original context of the song also fits in an amusing-but-kinda-scary way...

As JeanLuc would say to his seamstress, "Make it sew!"

Gee Willikers we're not going the JeanLuc route are we? He told his farmer, "Make it sow." ..his boatman, "Make it row." somebody stop me. OK, I'm stopping myself.

Whoops -- I restarted it in my last ketchup post. Sorry. I won't add any more (like JeanLuc telling the GLR, "make it slow.") :D

Well, I think I'm out for the wipend. Going on a short trip.

I hate to completely abandon the page I'm pope of, so in my absence I declare Kieryn (as the second poster) to be acting high-cleric of 754 should there be any need for the performance of important duties before we reach 755. This I decree from atop my nifty new imperial palace. ;)

@k.bookbinder: Glad you are enjoying the new Daft Punk album as well. By the way, if you want to feel completely empowered, like you can do absolutely anything, just listen to the track "Contact" over and over again. Gets my energy and adrenaline up every time.

@StratPlayer: Thanks. :) And good luck, er... In bocca al lupo on your continuing condiment quest.

@Corinne: Be good. And if you can't be good, have fun.

Stay classy, y'all!
In Svithjod, there stands a rock. It is 100 miles high and 100 miles wide. Once every 1000 years a little bird comes to this rock to sharpen its beak. One time, I changed just the last sentence of this signature, and lots of you noticed. Image

Enjoy your trip!

I am sad to say I have fallen off the face of the earth, but am still following the OTC! (But not really the OTT anymore) Saw the snake this morning, and of course had to come back and see the reactions and speculation :)

Thank you, thank you. I feel like a mere apprentice, or at best journeyman, but either way, praise from a master craftsman is always welcome.

And with that (my 100th post, no less), I must forsake the OTC and OTT for the Outside -- at least for a couple of dixAA, if not the entire wixend. I'll be back if/when I start jonesing too bad. Stay cool, all y'all, and as always, Wait For It.

AA That's what she ...ah, what's the use. I got nothin'.

Uh, spamjam, the hash you posted was from 8-9 newpix ago.... (from before "SNAKE!")

ETA
and molpy-snake is beating a retreat, also. By the time Megan gets up there, it'll be gone and she'll be wondering about Cueball's sanity.

Edit 2
(before "SNAKE!") to (from before "SNAKE!")
(8-9 pix before ...) to (happened before ...)

Edit 3
the correct image is in place, and I will spoiler. And accept ninja-ization.
