Well, one out of two ain't (that) bad...

Hmm, what's that slightly elevated flat area at approx. ⅓ of the frame?
We'll probably never know, they'll just walk past it.

Yeah, looks a little odd. Doesn't look statistically significant though.

Re: PSA: Past and Future of The Last Time Waiter

Postby BlueCrab » Mon Jun 10, 2013 3:16 pm UTC

AluisioASG wrote:If you don't read The Last Time Waiter, feel free to skip the following.

Spoiler:
I don't usually write stories. When I think of one, I usually just keep it in my mind.
The reason for that is that my imagination doesn't respect "this has been already published" boundaries. It hops between Past, Present and Future tenses, changing the story as it sees fit. This is, of course, bad for people who have already read the Past.
And that's exactly what I'm thinking of doing with The Last Time Waiter.

And why am I going to do that? It's simple: until now, it's just a simple story. No subplots, no twists (so far), nothing exciting. Then, while I was on deep storical (is that a word?) thinking during a certain private moment, this thought came to me:
my subconsciousness wrote:What-If the Engineer was named "Randall Munroe McKay"?

I realized this small change could change nothing, or everything. It can cause ripples through the whole story, giving it a new meaning, especially for the ending (in fact, it allows me to extend it in a very interesting way). And the good news is, it doesn't really change what was written so far. I'll need to add a Chapter 0, explaining the discovery of the Time Device and the foundation of the Order, but not much else will need to be changed (I'll tell you if I do that).

So, I'd like you readers to give me your opinions on this. But, in any case, I can tell you this:
BlitzGirl (the Blitzer, not the character) wrote:The future is pretty cool.

PS: is there any Android app I can use to follow the thread?

Does...does anybody not read The Last Time Waiter?* Huh, I guess it's possible; I usually avoid reading short stories myself, but these are chapters so that's different.

As to the question: yes, please! If I were writing the story I'd be leery of stepping on a real person's toes, but a) I have no reason to think you'll be pedal-tromping and b) it's not my story, it's yours, and bravo for letting it come out to play. Very, very, very few of my musings ever make it to the notes stage, and none so far have been finished. Bravo, xer, bravo!

Aaargh! I have sososososoooo much to do in the next few newpix, and soooo much more to do in the... I was going to say wips, but it's actually mips :(
I have a clever plan, though 8-): several of the things I have to do right now are because my Mom is coming to stay for a mip. She's retired, she loves reading - I'll introduce her to the OTC, then mention that there's an active, creative, voluminous forum dedicated to Waiting for It together. :D
I'll never have to Wait for It alone again, she'll Blitz her little tail off! Bwahaha hahaha ha ha

Reading your translation makes it much clearer that the canyon is the one carved by the (main) river, and that they have a long way to go before reaching the river's source, something that hadn't struck me before in quite that way. I think it's another way for the OTA to express "I didn't know it would be so big!". And so, I suspect that the frames do stitch together well, and we are not being gratuitously teleported wherever we need to be. We'll have to walk, just like they do, and... well... you know.

Taking only the hexadecimal characters from your post you get AAAAAAAAAAAFFACACAAAAFFAAD which in decimal is 197148111409706430000.

That starts with 1971.

In 1971 this book was published, so you effectively just posted every letter of the alphabet. I have no problem with your post, thank you for your cooperation.

Sweet sassy molassy! This is my one hundredth post!

It seems like I would have reached this milestone a lot sooner than this since I've been around since the very start...but I guess I've spent most of my time reading and not a whole lot of time writing. I guess I'll just keep telling myself that my signal-to-noise ratio is really, really good. :-)

In any case, although 100 is really not a significant amount compared to some of the lofty numbers others have already achieved, I think the precedent has been established to commemorate this milestone with something, so here's another song parody.

For those who don't recognize the song, here's a link to the original "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" so you can sing along!

Phhew.... Long wipend and busy wips ahead...

I'm far behind and unfortunately, have limited Time to catch up on Time in any detail for the foreseeable future. But I'll at least try to blitz-read and stay current reading-wise, even if I don't have the time to post much. I know there will be much that I see that I will love and admire and appreciate and would normally comment on, but if I don't, please don't take my silence for not liking your song, or poem, or artwork, or creative story -- I really do like them all!!!!

So if my presence around here is minimal for the foreseeable future, it is simply the Outside forces bearing down on me -- know that I DO read, even if I don't comment. And that, in some way, even if it's only sporadic reading, I am still here. I am not flying away. I am not:

"Like a Waiter Flown"
(based on "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan. Also, the Hendrix Live Version is pretty awesome, too)

Once upon a Time, it was all so fine;
You used to joke and rhyme, all the time, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "You will fall, you won't see it all"
You thought they were all just kidding you.

You used to laugh about
every poster who had just dropped out.
Now you don't talk so loud,
Now you don't seem so proud,
About Time, now that you say it's lost its appeal.

How does it feel?
How does it feel?
To be without a home,
like a complete unknown?
Like a Waiter flown...

You've posted some damn fine stuff, alright, way back when;
You had the knack then, but now the thread's all used to it.
And nothing in it seems right, not like how you write,
You won't come again -- this thread you choose to quit.

It's sad that you won't compromise
or make the time. But, least you realize
there's no sense giving alibis.
You've moved on, and without you, Time still flies,
but your memories of it now seem so unreal.

How does it feel?
How does it feel?
To be on your own,
With other fora to roam?
Like a Waiter flown...

You'll never turn around to see the frowns on the punsters and the clowns
or even hear the sounds of the molpys as they all sing to you
You never understood that it ain't no good
thinkin' that it's only about what this thread can bring to you.

You used to love the giant castle, where they sat,
and the mysterious little girl in her beret hat.
But ain't it hard when you discover that
that really wasn't where it's at,
after it took from you every moment it could steal?

How does it feel?
How does it feel?
To leave it alone,
not even from your phone,
Like a Waiter flown...

Return to the sheeple, leave all the forum people,
without blinking, thinking that you have got it made
All the posts and poems and the puns and things
in your mind still ring, but in time they'll surely fade.

You used to be so amused
at the inside jokes and the language that they used.
But get an IM now and you'll just refuse.
It's become nothing, so it's just nothing to lose
You're invisible now, your presence you won't reveal.

How does it feel?
How does it feel?
To be without a home,
like a complete unknown?
Like a Waiter flown...
Former Forever member of the OTT, now moved on to other things sucked back in by the wowterful wonder of the thread...

Taking only the letters representing notes on the C major scale:

AAAAAAAAAAAffAcacagaaaGffaad

The intervals become:

000000000040433332200220405

In decimal, just drop the leading zeros and get a number starting with 404. Sorry your post is not found.

Or...

Take the distinct notes: FAC and you get a nice plain F major chord plus G and a final D at the end. If it were an intro melody, I would pretty much keep a drone of FC throughout, giving a nice Fsus2 on the G, which I would hold while the next two Fs played, resolving on the last two As. I would make the final D come in with a bass tone giving a nice Dm7 chord changing the entire key of piece and then you obviously start alternating the minor 7th with the 5th major (G) in that nice classic bluesy way that 50% of all bluesy jazz pieces do, and then do some kind of Pink Floyd dark side of the moon type stuff, or better, a slower paced Christo Redentor type thing. Anyhow there are options there and I'm sure they all allow for the possibility of at some point throwing in an E note, thus resolving the underlying tension I created at the start of the piece. Hmm. Ok someone make this piece of music...

Double-dactyls (double-dactyls!) and a new song parody
And a picture made of people's avatars
There's a wiki that we all make up ourselves

When I come home there are chores I ought to do
But I go online and read the thread instead
Blow off dinner 'cause the microwave's too slow
Only have four hours before I go to bed

Getting sidetracked reading tvtropes again
Animated gif hypnosis setting in
Eyelids drooping, feel the coma level rise
Guess I'll wake up in these same old clothes again
Guess I'll wake up in these same old clothes again

This...is...AWEFULSOME! Happy 100! And such a fantastic filk!

StratPlayer wrote:Phhew....

Also, the Hendrix Live Version is pretty awesome, too)
Spoiler:
Once upon a Time, it was all so fine;

You've posted some damn fine stuff, alright, way back when;
You had the knack then, but now the thread's all used to it.

A re-made classic. Wonderful! Dylan would be proud (or so I would like to think).

I'll bear it in mind for if it ever gets written ;). Although I'm not sure I can pull of Bob Dylan's vocal style, I'll have to see. It's a maybe, anyway.

And speaking of Dylan, nice filk from StratPlayer! And another great one from Ebonite, that was fun to sing along to!

I'm game (though it's more of a helix of fifths, especially if you take temperment into account.) :) Many years ago for a game I invented the seven-and-a-half tone scale. Fifteen tones to the two octaves. I have no idea what it would sound like. I'd been meaning to write a quick and dirty simulator for it, but my supply of tuits did not include any circular ones. I think the fifths took them all.

Blindposting from NP 756 and not even attempting to hide my heresy.

I have been consumed by the outside the past week with moving to a new state. Turns out that like Michigan, West Virginia is also without the internets.

Anyway, I come back to find the OTC marching along and the OTT as amazing as ever. Plus to top *wink* it all off, I have a perfect hat from one BuffyGirl. Thank you so much, it is exactly as I would have hoped.

And now, I'm off to start my journey back to the present (or you can just assume I'm already there here in it, but lurking quietly in the shadows).

If I were LaPetite...

(Trying a bit of writing...)

Spoiler:
LaPetite perched herself down and opened her netbook. Trying to deceive these TimeWaiters was not paying off. They were heavily suspicious and were watching her instead of the One True Comic. Which they should be watching.

She sighed. She'd been in the comic, and she wanted to get back in. But she couldn't keep up with Megan and Cueball. She rarely had the energy to climb mountains anymore and she had had exams. Those exams plied on the Maths like no tomorrow. Rotational matrixes, like in that OtherComic. She laughed as she remembered how knowing that comic in her head had helped. Lovely.

Her only regret was that she had only one molpy, and it was accurately spotted as a snake. Corinne loved to curl up with LaPetite, and LaPetite had taught herself in the ways of the snake.

But it could all go wrong yet.

Sweet sassy mollassy.. Did lots of condimenting. Saw lots of stuff. New song lyrics and actual songs (yappo) were great. A new installment by ucim, I think! And some new tarot cards by ggh. All wonderful. 8-) Oh... and of course the loads of poetry. There were even a few slices of pizza that made me decide, already, what I'm having for lunch today. -_-
ETA: StraPlayer, you are always spot on. And Ebonite... that has become my new favorite sONGParody! Great job, guys.

Since there's way too much to comment on, here's just these few:

Hahah, I can imagine your surprise. If that had happened to me I probably would have stopped walking and stared at my dad in shock. Beautifully treeish. :D
