Happy 100, Earthling On Mars!

EDIT: Ooh! And a 6th papacy for me!
In Svithjod, there stands a rock. It is 100 miles high and 100 miles wide. Once every 1000 years a little bird comes to this rock to sharpen its beak. One time, I changed just the last sentence of this signature, and lots of you noticed. Image

Lonnnnnnnng ketchup from over the weekend.

Cuegan, don't go chasing waterfalls, just stick to the rivers and the sea that you used to.

We've come a long long way together. Through the sandy times and the woods. I have to wait for it like I should.

Yes, that works better in English. Portugese is inflected and English is (mostly) not, so the ending of the word (in Portugese) for "won" probably carries its grammatical function, whereas in English we use those pesky little words. I speak very little Portugese though; I have a hunch you know it a little better. :)

Ok, thank you.
Also, Google Translate is useless on these cases.

AluisioASG wrote:Story-wise, the fact Yu became blind is irrelevant compared to "a freakin' magic box fell from the sky!".

Not so irrelevant as you might think. For one thing, he didn't get to see the magic box fall, and thus only hears about it later

He saw it coming (but not fall, indeed). I guess he kept looking because he didn't realized it was falling (for reference, it was a missile-like trajectory -- it will make sense later).

ucim wrote:which (maybe) motivates his interest in it.

It attracts the attention of everyone who looks at it. But just a few (like Yu) get the message.

ucim wrote:And, without seeing it, he manages to turn it on (so to speak).

As I said, few get the message.
(I wonder, maybe this is like Contacts of the Third Kind?)

ucim wrote:This would be somewhat less awesome if he were not blind.

I have to agree with this.

ucim wrote:I'll bet his blindness will have some other plot significance later on too.

Sorry, wrong bet. He'll be dead by the end of the next chapter.

Nope - although it's been stuck in my head since the waterfall first appeared! Inspiration just hasn't struck me for a good parody, though.

The other song that's been stuck in my head for a VERY long time is:

She's a BlitzGirl, and she's gone too far
But you know it don't matter anyway. . .
I just haven't come up with a witty direction to take it! Maybe now that I've mentioned it, someone else will. (StratPlayer? A challenge for you?) :-)

The Last Time Waiter, chapter 0.5: Time to Record History

“There's a time for recording history, and there's a time for making it.” — Edwin Massey

Spoiler:
On the other side of the window, a couple lay still on a beach. For minutes, the public discussed about what they were seeing. Who were they? What were they doing? What was the meaning of all this? They looked at Yu for answers, but he gave none.

The interest on the device didn't last long. People went back to their little affairs and just a few kept looking at the device, trying to decipher it. And those were the first to notice when the device restored itself to a three-dimensional form and the strange objects changed orbits, before compressing again, this time displaying a new, but similar, image. Upon the realization the image changed, someone quickly went and brought pencil and paper, and started to draw the image — or a very simplified version thereof. Others told the remaining villagers the image had changed, and that maybe it would change again; some came back, some don't. And others started to try to answer the basic questions: who, where, when, why.

Yu was sitting on a nearby corner, looking at the device even though he couldn't see it. Or at least his eyes couldn't see it, for he could feel it in all its magnificence; he didn't know what it was, or what was its purpose, but he believed that the device was the reason of his own existence.

---

As the days passed, the crowd that observed the device organized itself. There were those in charge of recording every image, while others pondered on their meanings and developed working hypotheses. Some wrote stories involving the people from the other side, and some tried to convince other people to join them. Finally, a few people, those capable of the highest level of abstraction and meta-reasoning, analyzed the community that was flourishing around the device and the images it displayed.

Yu, the one who activated the device, died due to unknown reasons a short time after all these things. His last words were “It's time. Wait for it.”. And with this, those who formed that community started to call themselves the Time Waiters.

Back in the present just in time for my hundredth post, so it seems some present presents are called for.

First, here's what (near) the top of a (small) mountain (in a particular area) looks like. The white tame dire-molpy in the stylish pink and purple fleece is less than 1/6 of a cue at the shoulder; the forest visible at the left and right is about 1/3 of a cue tall, and it really is trees, likely hundreds of kilonewpix old, not shrubs or bushes.

Second, here's a song about theories. To the tune of "I've Got A Theory" from Once More With Feeling, the Buffy Musical.

Note: I added an extra stanza, because we have a lot more theories than the Scoobies did! Also, the "casting" of individual parts is a bit random (with one obvious exception); I did some cursory research to associate different theories with different Timewaiters, but I doubt I hit them all correctly.

I've Got A Theory
from
Once More WIth Waiting, the One True Thread Musical

[BlitzGirl]
I've got a theory
They're in the past far
They used a time machine and now they're prehistoric

[Qalyar]
I've got a theory
It's Madagascar
Which changed direction from collisions meteoric

[Group]
I've got a theory we should work this out
I'm getting weary; what's this dreary waiting all about

[Kieryn]
I've got a theory
Randall's just messing... [everyone glares]
Which is ridiculous 'cause Randall plans out everything
Can do no wrong, knows five-act structure, heresy bad
And I'll be over here

[StratPlayer]
I've got a theory
Megan is snoozing
And dreams whatever her subconscious thinks is groovy

[mscha]
I've got a theory
Some tots out cruising
Got shipwrecked just like in that eighties Brooke Shields movie

[Group]
I've got a theory we should get it right
Because it's clearly up to us to see the light

[Fluffy]
I've got a theory
It could be molpies

[Ebonite]
I've got a -

[Fluffy]
Molpies aren't just cute like everybody supposes
They got them grabby tails and clingy little toes-es
And what's with all the chirping
They're just calling in bigger dinosaurs
Molpies, molpies it must be molpies

[Group]
I've got a theory, we should work this fast
Because it clearly could get serious before it's passed

[Buffygirl]
I've got a theory
It doesn't matter

What can't we face if we wait for it
When it takes place we'll all adore it
The end of Time
We've all been there
Mountains to climb
We'll wait and stare

[Group]
What's in this thread that we can't handle
We have no dread of acts of Randall
We'll post our bits
We'll all be nice
We'll ketchup blitz
[Vytron]
Hey, I've blitzed twice

[Group]
What can't we face if we're together (We'll wait for it)
What's in this place that we can't weather (We'll wait for it)
There's nothing we can't face

[Fluffy]
Except for molpies...

Really cool chapter, AluisioASG!

And nice filk, Rule110! Much fun, and kind of related to a project I'm brewing which is very sea-ish and hopefully tree-ish... won't be ready for a while yet, it's pretty ambitious, but it could be really awesome. Not gonna reveal too much yet though ;)

And with that it's time for me to go C.O.M.A
I must give in to that C.O.M.A...

I'm pretty sure these haven't been done -- please take them up! I'd especially vote for the Fatboy Slim.

For the sake of the meter, may I suggest:

We've come a long long way together

I have to celebrate you, Cuegan911
And wait for it like I should...

911 Or "Waiters," depending of course on whom you're singing to.

Why are they wavering, newpixbot? Cuegan seem pretty determined to be mountain climbers toxip.

Oooh, I want to hear more of this one! :D

I love how clearly "Molpy" has made its way into your household's vocabulary, and was curious about the "R" at the end as well. But it's pretty funny. :P

Not actually mine, it is from the cheeseburger parenting fails page. But it was amusing to run across Molpy there.

wait, is it supposed to say molpy, or something else? reveal to me the thought process of the child!!

Yeah good luck with that!*

Okay, experienced child-writing analysis here:
Spoiler:
Given the handwriting and drawing skills combined I'd say the writer is 9 or so, at the upper end of the age range at which letters are still often reversed, so it could be ‘Molqy.’ (Technically a 'p' can also be interchangeable with a 'b' or a 'd,' but the style of the 'b' and 'd’s' in the other words are different from the 'p,' so I'm saying 'q.') The spacing is good throughout and also the descender of the 'p' is stylistically different from the 'l’s' otherwise I'd say it might be intended to be ‘Molloy;’ the nicely written 'e’s' in the rest of the words tell me that the vowel in ‘Molpy’ is intended to be an 'o.' Thus the first word is either ‘Molpy’ or 'Molqy.’ A nickname? A Time Waiter's child?

I think the original word behind ‘Obedient’ was ‘Outstanding.’

The drawing is fun: spiked hair, blue and orange combined, and the pieces on the shoulders resembling armor make me think the creator is a boy, while the heart stickers, pink legs, and word choices make me think it's a girl. Affectionate boy, holistic girl, maybe brother and sister together?

Wistful: it would be really cool to find out, I used to be really good at this game.

*[voice of experience]To me, there's no point asking a child what they were thinking. The answer probably won't be helpful, and probably will infuriate you one way or another.[/voice of experience]

Edit: only the finest of parents deserve the ‘Rude’ designation. Whether it's champion belching, quasi-dirty songs, or being quietly snarky, to a child rudeness in a parent is something to be admired and emulated, a pinnacle to be striven for.

Of course, it's possible that this parent makes a habit of interrupting or making the child actually leave the (bathroom/tv/computer/phone/paper dolls - delete or supplant as necessary) once in a while. But that's no fun at all. :)

By the way, serious love for that quote. I'd add it to my siglist except I'd likely forget I got it from here and eventually use it myself.

Maybe the d in rude is a reversed b, and the child was trying to say "Ruby"? Here's a link to the source, which does indicate the child is male. http://cheezburger.com/7508875520

Here we go: The Last Time Waiter, revised chapter 1: The Clock Ticks

Spoiler:
Now featuring:
Image

“Always act to increase the survival chances of the largest group you are a part of.” — ttscp
Spoiler:
The Order of the Time Waiters was deeply worried. Their numbers had been decreasing at an alarming rate, and soon there would be too few of them to perform all the work that had to be done. The leaders of the Order, as well as its most important public figures, were reunited to discuss the issue. A lot was said about the causes of the problem: it was difficult to recruit outsiders, and those who joined them failed to fully grasp the sacredness and importance of their work. A few experiments had been done to generate humans tuned to their necessities, but they failed in rather awkward ways.

And yet, despite all the discussion, by dinner time not a single solution had been proposed. Everyone was now looking at the only person who hadn't opened her mouth.

The Archduchess BlitzGirl.

The Archduchess wrote:Thanks for all this attention; I don't deserve it at all. But, to answer the question not asked, yes, I have a solution.

The Archduchess' passivity on revealing her solution to such a important issue upset Arch-Cardinal buffygirl, official perfect milliner of the Order.

The Arch-Cardinal wrote:And why wasn't this solution mentioned before? Before we wasted all this time in useless discussions?

The Archduchess wrote:I had to consider the implications of my proposal, dear Arch-Cardinal. I am sure many of you won't like it at all, but seeing no one has a better idea, I'm afraid it's our only salvation.

The Archduchess wrote:It is of public knowledge that the Arch-Cardinal has traveled to the Northern Lights a few years ago. In her report, she mentions, between other things, an engineer who lives in Halcyon and is known for creating machines designed for working reliably for incredibly long timespans, having been given the title of Engineer of Eternity.

This part of her report caught my attention a few months ago, when this issue started to be noticed. Since then, I have been thinking deeply on the feasibility of a machine capable of recording and analyzing the Frames. Such a machine would be capable of performing its functions even after our lifetimes.

So this is my proposal: travel to the Northern Lights, find this Engineer of Eternity and ask him to build us this machine, if possible.

The Archduchess could see the shock on her peers' faces. If that wasn't a despairing situation, her high status and popularity wouldn't prevent her from being burned for heresy. Even through in a civilized society, such a suggestion shouldn't case such commotion, human nature itself prevents rational thinking at the mere mention of ‘disposability’. But that was a despairing situation, which called for a desperate solution.

The Arch-Cardinal was the only one strong enough to raise her voice.

The Arch-Cardinal wrote:I suppose… that we don't have another choice. Director Kieryn, assemble a party. We will depart with the first sun rays.

Oh, you shouldn't have told us this; now all OTT followers who have children will name them that, so they can refer to them as their "little Molpy"!1

Very nice. Is it your pic? And where is it IRL if you know.

I hope you don't mind me replying in public, others might be interested too.
Not my pic, unfortunately. Just a Google image search on ‘waterfall’, and found one here that was usable for this purpose. So, Auckland, NZ; apparently.

Because we are all about geographical precision here, I just thought I'd confirm that this is Whangarei Falls, ~150km north of Auckland. It's a beautiful spot and if I remember rightly, was the location for a gloriously cheesy shampoo commercial in the 1980s.

We do not have children but I already call one of my cats my "little molpy". And I completely agree, I always hated having to punctuate inside the quotes. It never did look quite right. However, such blatant disregard for the *ahem* "rules" often resulted in lower marks, so I learned to submit and do it the "right way."

Since nobody's (recently) discussed just what Cueball and Megan are, in societal terms, Let me suggest that it's simple:

Vell, Cueball and Megan are just zis guy and zis girl, you know?

Also, the Newpix Clock seems to be working fine here in Massachusetts.
