Oh, this period is filling me with impatience! During the last Fading, we were watching the sandcastle be eroded, so it made sense to stay there - but this time, Megan's injured! And the only thing happening here is that the sun is setting, which is presumably is doing where they are too! Why are we being left with a cliffhanger like this? Oh Great Lord Randall, what are you doing???

Er, that might be heresy.

Also, fantastic OTTification, ZoomanSP! I was singing it along in my head the whole time!

Edit: Can there be such a thing as a heretical Pope?

@taixzo: Yes, surely you must be a member of the Western Paradox Church? Or absolutely not? :D

Feel free to ignore me for this little blurb about the OTT and chattiness:

Actually, it kind of is, especially during high-traffic periods like the beginning of Time, the Fading (and just after, around Bag Pun time), and the raptorcat attack (which you must be slogging your way through, sorry). Posts are composed and submitted within minutes or even seconds of each other, as the timestamps show.

How about a seaish wall of quotes about the OTT-as-chatroom? (Also feel free to ignore.)

k.bookbinder (Newpage 842) wrote:Reading over the past few newpages, it strikes me that the "chatting" environment in here seems to have gone from forum, to chat room, to cocktail party; there is a pretty even mix of topics which one might "overhear" as they read through the thread, much like moving back and forth through a crowded room at a cocktail party.

Vytron (Newpage 912) wrote:I have to say that the thread's feeling, slow, but surely, has been changing, it has been approaching chat-room like.. huh, what's the word? Erm, yeah, it's like reading a chatroom log.

That's not bad or anything, but I never reply to things from chatroom logs, so these last few days it's been a lot more reading and a lot less posting (which hopefully is acceptable Image)

HAL9000 wrote:Yeah, this thread has a pretty breakneck pace for one on a webcomic forum.

It's basically a chatroom with a log at this point

HAL9000 (Newpage 898) wrote:The thread has had a tendency to do that when things slow down (I remember a time pre-Fade, during which I was one of the very few active posters that the chat room-like atmosphere was pointed out). Blitzing through those chunks feels very much like I'm trying to get from one side of a crowded party to the other, with no time to stop and talk.

And just to show that this posting rate was around near the dawn of Time, newpage 108:
Pfhorrest (Newpage 108) wrote:This thread makes me feel like I live in a different timestream from the rest of you. I feel like some kind of long-lived immortal watching fleeting human lives flit past. I glance back here every now and then, a couple times a day, maybe every few minutes of comic time, which seems frantically obsessive at my pace, and... goddamn, another few dozen pages? There's weeks and weeks of conversation happening here every hour. Whole discussions rise, run out their fleeting but passionate little lives, then wane and die in what feels like the brief moment in which I glanced away from the thread.

The sun's angle remains near 49 degrees from horizontal. It's descending close to, or possibly exactly, 8 vertical pixels and 7 horizontal pixels per newpix. Unless something changes, the center of the disc will be below the horizon for the first time 14 newpix from now, crossing near the top of the slightly steeper slope near the horizontal center of the frame.

ZoomanSP, that was excellent!

And Marsh'n, I thought of the Kansas song when Eutychus wrote "...dust on my screen." Very well done. The original doesn't give you many words to work with, and you made them all count.

As for my heresy; well, I will also concede that there could be a thin cloud or haze layer, that helps explain the darkening around the sun's disc during the sunset; what I doubt is that that is the main cause of the darkening, and that it is something significant in itself such as an approaching storm or nearby fire. To put it another way: I predict stars will come out when it gets dark, despite whatever haze might be around now. I'll ask the rhetorical question: how else would you clearly depict a sunset, in grayscale, in a sky that starts out #FFFFFF white? I called it artistic license before, but there's also an element of artistic necessity to it, if Randall wanted to make sure the audience (or at least, those involved enough to test and alter the grayscale values) can tell it's a sunset.

That said, while admitting to no actual wrongdoing, I'll submit to the Chocolate Maiden as paragraphed. Especially if I get to nibble her ears off. And maybe a few other delicious bits.

Here's a crude estimate of the rest of the sunset:
Image
So, in about 10 np, the sun will touch the horizon, and 2 np later, it will be all the way below it.

My prediction (usually wrong) is that not much will happen before then.

ETA: ninja'd by rule110, but a different prediction. Time will tell which one of us is right less wrong.

I think this needle-pulled thing is somewhere between a forum thread and a chat-room, and always has been and likely will be for all Time. You would never post a song in a chat room, it would disappear too quick, but you also don't usually have the banter and variety of conversation that we have here in a normal thread. The latter may be because the OTT is tethered to the OTC, but, moving faster than it, has a long leash. I like the cocktail party analogy. You can chat without someone at a cocktail party but someone could also stand up and sing a song at a cocktail party (depending on the atmosphere and how much fun the people there are). Of course it wouldn't be a cocktail party, probably more of a cupcake party. Very well, perhaps I will cease calling this the OTT and begin calling it the OTP, the One True Party. I just hope we don't get political... or do I...

I just hope we don't get political... or do I...

Blind-posting a bit, because I'm several pages behind.

Finally, there's a chart of my own activity (Yay!), plotted against the whole thread, and comparing weekdays to weekends. You can see I'm generally a good boy about getting my coma time during the week, but I stay up waaay too late on weekends. And on weekdays there's a surge from 7-9am RDT (6-8am my time, CDT), when I generally do a quick ketchup before I go to work.

By the way, I can do graphs like this for other Waiters, but due to privacy concerns I won't post any unless you give me permission. (If you do give me permission, don't be surprised if I have a comment about your posting habits.)

Question, how does RDT correlate with Outside time zones?

I'd like to see my graph, if you have time.

I do realize I left out how to make sure you get the hash and all that. My thoughts are if we start getting into that we'll scare people off before they even get here. So, everyone, be nice if folks get it wrong. So did I at first, and at least once late, when the servers weren't cooperating. Since we can edit posts, and we have newpixbot, these are things we can deal with. (And, I remain a little sad that the competition to post it got so intense that we lost Professor Grumbles.)

I think the newpixbot should take over the job on the ONG rather than ten minutes later. Competition to post it? How absurd is that?

As someone who's never done it, I'd like to have the opportunity to get an ONG. I'm not interested in competing to get one, I figure eventually I'll just be awake at a time that there's not much competition. :)

To put it another way: I predict stars will come out when it gets dark, despite whatever haze might be around now. I'll ask the rhetorical question: how else would you clearly depict a sunset, in grayscale, in a sky that starts out #FFFFFF white? I called it artistic license before, but there's also an element of artistic necessity to it, if Randall wanted to make sure the audience (or at least, those involved enough to test and alter the grayscale values) can tell it's a sunset.<snip>

Seconded. Also, I think my people her are thrown off by the darkness because of the enhancements, when I go back and look at the actual images it doesn't seem nearly as dark as I think of it being having seen the enhancements.

Chapter 3, verses mumblemumble of mumblemumblemumble,
NP 555 of 938; walking along the river

Alert : this is going to be a pretty long post, please feel free to skip it.

====== Happenings in the OTC =======
As of my now, CueGan ha(s|ve) departed after a quick nap and sleeptalking on the River bank.

====== Ceremony =======
Amidst a somewhat calm discussion of what on earth the camera is doing (and a pretty interesting 3d gif for a very plausible explanation), celebration cakes, and some awesome cupcakes, I ventured across Selcouth's And PhoenixRising's promotion to BlitzGirl The Next ceremony, masterfully directed by ucim, Pope of the Holy Contradiction :

ucim wrote:Act 1, scene 1

Spoiler:
There are the sounds of trumpets. The lights come on to reveal the courtyard of a mighty castle. Banners are hung, torches are lit, and final preparations are hurriedly being made for the arrival of One who is Most Esteemed. The trumpets sound again in fanfare as the carpet, of deepest red, is rolled out from the grand stage, and a procession of Knights, Courtiers, Cardinals, and all manner of Royalty and Clergy begin their procession from the back of the hall. And is it? Could it be BlitzGirl the First has graced us in the procession? It's hard to tell at this distance, it being such a huge courtyard and a surprisingly enormous crowd. One by one they take their places on the stage, each sitting on an elaborately carved perch that befits the grandeur of the occasion, and as the last dignitary sits, the music comes to a glorious close.

And then, nothing happens. The elaborately carved podium, center stage, remains empty. There is great anticipation, and the assembled crowd begins to murmur, but the stage remains completely still. A moment passes, then another and yet there is no movement. But the crowd does not disperse; it instead becomes more intense in its anticipation.

From stage right appears the Pope of the Holy Contradiction, dressed in richly embroidered vestments of glorious golden hue, which flow around him2 as he1 strides to the podium and implores the crowd:
What is the greatest commandment ever written, uttered, spake, or encoded with electrons and sent at the speed of light and darkness throughout all the land? What is it to which we all must aspire, though our bodies be weak, and our will faltering? What is it that is the ultimate purpose of our assembly here, and indeed, of our entire lives? That commandment, handed to us from On High, is both simple, and challenging. It is, if I may utter the words myself without feeling inadequate:
Wait For It.
In this is written all of life. You have just done this here, this moment, but you must do this everywhere. And you must especially do this in the One True Comic, as it only exists in its own Time. For those who have arrived after the Beginning of Time, properly following this commandment involves a Holy Quest, pioneered by the Holy Apostle BlitzGirl The First, who in making her pilgrimage, has left us a Sacred Book, the Book of BlitzGirl.
The trumpets sound again in glorious fanfare.
We are gathered here to commemorate two others, who in completing this pilgrimage, have elevated themselves from ordinary Timewaiters, to the Most Exalted Status of BlitzGirl the Next. So, let it be known here and forevermore, that Selcouth and PhoenixRising have, by virtue of their heroic deeds, are consecrated each as BlitzGirl The Next, a title among the highest honors that can be conveyed in the One True Thread. Selcouth, I bid the rise, and kneel.
There is a disturbance among the crowd of Timewaiters as somebody makes his2 way up to the stage. It is Selcouth himself. Having no avatar at this time, he1 is hard to see, but you can make him2 out if you look carefully. He1 rises up onto the stage, and kneels before the Pope. The Pope raises his2 hand above Selcouth's head, and in a voice that carries far past the castle walls, heralds:
Selcouth, in honor of your having properly Waited For It even after the Beginning of Time, forsaking the distractions and temptations of the present time and the present Time, but seeking only to have the truth revealed to you at Its Proper Pace, and furthermore, in recognition of your doing this in anonymity, even before creating an account with which to receive the Sacrament of Sigcouragement, I, as the Pope of the Holy Contradiction, do consecrate you and bestow upon thee the title BlitzGirl The Next, that for all time, and all of Time, it be known that you have truly and properly Waited For It.
Selcouth rises, the trumpets sound, the crowd cheers, and the flags are waved up and down and left and right in curvy fashions, so as not to open the rift whence velociraptors might emerge should one make the Wrong Assumption about the shape of Space in Time. The Pope raises his hands to quiet the crowd, and speaks again to the assembly.
PhoenixRising, I bid thee rise and kneel.
Out of the crowd of humble Timewaiters, PhoenixRising, easily recognized by his flaming avatar he1 has on today, makes his2 way to the stage and kneels before the Pope, who again raises his2 hand above the head poking out of this flaming vestment, and proclaims
PhoenixRising, in honor of the completion of your Sacred Pligrimmage, that you have truly Waited For It as it was meant to be, forsaking the sight of the future as you pursued your Holy Quest, by the power vested in me as the Pope of the Holy Contradiction, do I consecrate you and bestow upon thee the title of BlitzGirl the Next. And furthermore do I consecrate the Gospel of PhoenixRising, a True and Holy Record of your Quest, to be counted among the Holy Books, alongside the Gospel of BlitzGirl, that it provide inspiration to all who follow, and indeed, to all Timewaiters, for all time and all of Time.
The trumpets sound again as the crowd roars and waves banners in curvy ways to avoid Velociraptorlypse (and Velociraptor lips). PhonenixRising rises and joins Selcouth center stage as the Pope takes holds his hands high to still the crowd. He1 speaks:
And now I would like to invite our Most Esteemed BlitzGirl The First to take the stage and say a few words of inspiration.
The crowd goes wild! But at just that moment part of the castle collapses and water starts seeping into the courtyard. It seems the sea is still rising.

1 or perhaps she, it's hard to tell
2 or maybe her... it's hard to tell

Jose

Right, that cracked me up way more than it should have. Well played, StratPlayer, well played indeed.

====== Complaints Desk ======
In a darker mood, NP 549 has seen some discussion about the very discipline of BlitzGirling, and posting old walls of replies. This discussion has sparked a horrible doubt : am I actually being a nuisance by posting these letters ?
If so, please let me know by any means available, and I will resume reading in silence, as I only seek to comply to the good practices of the OTT (while still reading it all).

I would discuss it more, but as someone who has read the OTT throughout its various mood swings, I realize that this too shall pass, and pretty soon everyone will find something else to get in a tizzy over. All I have to do is Wait for it. Note to blitzers: it would be more helpful to others if you begin your signposts with a notation, as I did, so those who are not reading all of the thread of Time may skip them if they so choose (and please, spoiler your text walls).

Thank you for the clarification, indeed, the mood swings constantly within the OTT.

Maybe blitzers could do it?

I would gladly have done it, but that would imply re-reading the whole thread and thoroughly documenting the process. Honestly, I don't think I have the stomach to go through the last ~550 pages again.

In any case, the last few pages could easily fit in "the Age of the Grumps"

That's about it for now, see y'all later !

"Randall Daylight Time" refers to a 24-hour day starting when the first Time comic appeared. As I've been given to understand, Randall lives in the U.S. Eastern time zone, and publishes new xkcd comics at midnight his time, so the original Time comic appeared March 25, 2013, at 12:00am EDT (UTC-4:00). However long Time runs, I'll continue to divide it into icositetranewpix or 24-hour days, so all my charts will be Randall Daylight Time (equal to Eastern Daylight Time). If Time runs long enough for the U.S. to return to standard time, mscha may shorten one day on his canonical list, but I'll always take Time 24 (or 48) frames at a time, unless the ONG rate changes again.

Too much information?

I sense redundancy here. At least, I assume that the Great Lord Randall is ONGniscient, as well as ONGnipotent, and thus knows his audience better than we know ourselves.π

π2Kinda like George Eliot knows men better than they know themselves. It takes a woman.
2Have some square π, it tastes just as good as the round ones.

Actually, I won't be shortening anything on my list, I'm using UTC. (There's some Javascript – yes indeed, there's Javascript – to convert the date/time in the second column to your local time zone, but that doesn't affect the list. It simply repeats the header row every 24 newpix.)

Oh, I forgot earlier, you asked about DST in The Netherlands. Yes, we do have DST, but call it summer time. And it starts later and ends earlier than in North-America. (Last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October.) So, the first 261 frames of Time were in winter time, the rest (so far) in summer time. But you should just ignore that for any graphing purposes.

OK, after being pummeled by the Outside for several weeks, I've managed to go from complete and total OTT silence to actually making a second post in the same day!

Sheesh, some people you just can't shut up, right?

Anyway, after spending intense effort at trying to catch back up and fill in missing gaps in both the OTC and the OTT, I have this detailed summary to offer:

Spoiler:
OTC: Cool comic. An intriguing mix of artistic imagery, nerdy subject-matter, and quirky, head-scratching weirdness.
OTT: Cool thread. An intriguing mix of artistic offerings, nerdy subject-matter, and quirky, head-scratching weirdness.

That is all. Carry on...

This is why I like living in a place where we don't take part in this clock-changing foolishness (it's always UTC -7:00 here). No remembering "spring back, fall forward", worrying about whether a recurring meeting will drop outside of working hours later in the year and any time based scripts I write will function without unnecessary switching logic.

By the way, thanks for the 200th post cake. I noticed and enjoyed it as I was ketchuping, but got distracted by outside things and the darkening and forgot to reply.

Well, that ketchup wasn't so bad. Only 164 pages.

On the subject of of chatroominess/partyness/decrees:
Those who responded to me (there were several) brought up/repeated some good points. After I posted my rant, the decrees I passed over weren't nearly as obtrusive, which was nice. I started paying at least cursory attention to them again. To follow the party metaphor (one which I personally rather like), they've become akin to the group off in the corner playing charades or some similar party game.

Also, the sun will be partly behind the tree next newpix! Cool!
