Welcome to the One True Thread! I see you've discovered the wiki... yes, there is a lot (it even makes me dizzy, and I've been reading since the beginning of Time). Jump right in, we don't bite! Pretty soon you'll be a part of the culture that is being developed here.

Well, the animation part is semi-automated by now, especially once I've figured out the right settings for a certain molpy or something, generating the next one a few newpix later only takes a minute.
But the main ingredient is simply spending way too much time here. I think my TV consumption has dropped by 80% or more since the beginning of Time, for instance.

And that's a bad thing? I would dare to say that all this experience might even be used on your resume. After Time has ended, in apparently November 15013.

What I don't understand here: Why is the sky near the horizon not as dark as above?
Hum. I've been in the dark a lot. Actually, I like darkness.
Normally, I'd argue somewhere along the lines "light pollution".

But not in a ~ 14'000 A.D. wilderness.

It depends on where they are and the time of year. Where I am, for example (53.3°N) astronomical twilight never ends at this time of year. As a result, there's always a brighter hue on the horizon through the night.

Checking out from Time and the OTT for a while, for a trip to Russia in the heretical world. I dread the amount of Ketchup I have to devour upon my return (not that found of ketchup - esp. this kind :P )
Anyway my thoughts will be with Cueball and his lonely task through the night on the world known as ....? (we really should give it a name while waiting for a definite identification  )
Keep up the good wait folks!
The past is full of traps, charms and mirages, but if you just keep up with with what you are doing it will all be fine.

ggh had added some tarot cards to the wiki, then removed them without explanation. I readded them. There's still a lot of work to be done, however.

Just getting back now, but I was working on a page similar to the buffy hat page with pics, dates, notes, etc. It wasn't ready to be live, but I didn't see any sort of sandbox area to work in, so I just copied the whole thing to a text editor and deleted it 'til I have time to work on it again. I can't see what on there now because I'm at a browser that can't handle it, but I'm sure it's great, and I'll just leave it in your capable hands. :)

Huh. Now I've seen the page, and it looks like what I had, and had hidden because it contains random placeholders and incorrect information. :/

I'll refrain from editing it, because I don't want to get into a wiki-editing battle with anyone, but I would like to retract my endorsement. :P

Yes, he seems to be looking around constantly, most likely keeping vigilant for raptorcatpys. Perhaps he is comforted by that irrational sense of security one gets from curling up in one spot, like a child hiding under the blankets from a monster under the bed.

Very nice. I've been trying to use these arcs to project where polaris is, but so far nothing is lining up right, the mid-point is all over the place.

Very good. That tells us something important in a slightly meta way. If Randall had simply drawn a starry sky image and was rotating it for each frame, all the arcs would be concentric. That they're not means it's overwhelmingly likely that the sky is being rendered algorithmically. (The alternative would be that he is repositioning each star by hand!) That rendering, which must project a model of (at least a portion of) the celestial sphere into a flat frame, must introduce distortion somewhere. It's a matter of deciding what kind of distortion is acceptable, and choosing the projection accordingly. For example, we don't see the distances a given star moves starting out shorter at the top of the frame due to foreshortening, which we would see in (for example) a wide angle camera image of the night sky with the camera held horizontal.

I note that a little bit to the left of the sun's path, some of the star paths are almost straight lines. Farther left still, they appear to bend the other way. I think it's likely that in this projection, a star whose path comes out as a perfectly straight line is on the celestial equator. (That's simply a sensible, to the point of being nearly necessary, feature for such a projection to have.) Its path will therefore cross the true horizon (which the actual silhouette of the landscape might be higher or lower than at any given point) at due west.

If that's true, it tells us that:

- We are looking slightly north of west.
- The sun set slightly to the north of west.
- It's mid spring.
- We are in the northern hemisphere at latitude 39.5, the angle of the straight-line star path.
- The celestial equator is way out of place.

Good so far...

I don't like this one. Randall is an astrophysicist and a connoisseur of map projections; why would he make an error like that?

Fell behind again. Blindposting from 930. Please forgive if any comments are redundant to ones made between then and now.

I just got done reading about people who have trouble with left and right. Maybe you folks have never heard of the simple mnemonic that's I've always seen taught to children. Put up both your hands like this:
(Spoiled because the only workable photo google images found for me is quite sea-ish.)
Spoiler:

The hand with a proper L is left, and the hand with a backwards L is not.

I still sometimes have to think about east vs west, but I always remember that a compass rose with north at the top spells "WE".

No, you're right. The "I" in "I'll" is serif, while the other "I"s are sans-serif.

I don't recall who or where, but I read from some comic-making-type person that with all-caps lettering the capital I with the crossbars is used to make the pronoun "I" stand out. I'm not sure if a reason for it beyond that was even stated, maybe it's just a tradition thing.

I believe you are referring to Space Battleship Yamato aka Star Blazers.

Has anyone else noticed that geekwagon appears to be using a more sophisticated difference filter? Here's a sample.

http://geekwagon.net/projects/xkcd1190/?frame=2402&framediff=2401I

The milky way would have been all green and red in the previous filter.

Deplicator hasn't signed on since s/he posted the link to geekwagon, but if you are paying attention, Deplicator, thanks, this is just what I was wishing for.

IWhen I used an image tag for this, it didn't resolve. Well, duh, it's not an image, but a web page. You'll just have to follow the link to see what I mean.

mscha, I don't know how you do all your manips and still keep so much on track with the thread...doing this is so time consuming.

Very nice. I've been trying to use these arcs to project where polaris is, but so far nothing is lining up right, the mid-point is all over the place.

Edfel: awesome. Exactly what we needed
Thirds, et al:
What we need to do is cycle through the millenia looking at Sagittarius until the celestial equator aligns with the straight line coming from the upper left corner. Then cycle through the months until the sun is in Lybra
We need jupiter or Mars to complete the match

Wildhound, you are on the brink - advance congrats on your 100th post!

Huzzah!

I figured I should have something exciting to say for this occasion, so I went away and quickly wrote a Java program of my own to show the differences between any two frames of the OTC. And it works!
