Ah, the joys of lefting and righting.

I still say you can't see which is her left and which is her right leg. She's standing facing our right, with one leg forward. But that might be either leg, at least, I can't see the difference in a stick figure...

Certainly when she's sideways, there's no way to know (though I suspect the brain will make a random decision which is then hard to go back on)
If she's facing us or turned away, it should be obvious. We can at least know which leg is hurt

charlie_grumbles returns? That deserves a double-dactyl

Mumblety grumblety
Here in the OTT
Could it be that I see
Charlie again?
Grumbling here publicly,
No longer does he flee
Temperamentally
Into his den!

Hiya folks,

I've been watching the OTC since the beginning, and checking this thread periodically as well. But the astronomy talk has prompted me to finally register and throw in some experience.

Why are we assuming the bright setting object was Venus? It could just have easily be Jupiter, Saturn, or Mars. Mercury is unlikely due to the distance from the Sun, but all the other bright planets are very possible. And even if it was Venus, it will sit at or near the point of elongation for weeks to months. The actual angular separation between the planet and the Sun is a rough guess at best, depending on the angular scale of our field of view, which is imprecisely known (though we could figure it based on the current star field). There's simply no solid basis to insist that we know a single day of the year, based on an assumption of which planet we're looking at and a guess at angular separation.

And since we don't know the date and therefore the season, I think trying to figure out our latitude is also going to be a guess at best. Speculation based on the range of the boabab trees and other distinctive plants is still our most likely path.

Other than that, you all have been very entertaining, please carry on. :)

Good points.

By my measurements, the sun and planet number one (green circle) are the same distance as alpha Aretis and beta Pegasi, which are 25 degrees apart. This rules out Mercury. Regarding magnitude, I don't think you can rule out any of the other 4, since we don't have a good pixel to magnitude scale. But there's something else...!!

I may have missed the conversation about it, but did anyone else notice the second planet in Aquarius?! (yellow circle in pic below). It is almost certainly Mars (possibly Saturn), given that it appears to have the same magnitude as theta Scorpii and epsilon Sagittarii (both in red), which are 1.9 and 1.8 visual magnitude, respectively. Saturn has a minimum visual magnitude of 1.47 and Mars of 1.84. All the other planets are way too bright. So it must be Mars. Given the difference in brightness between Mars and the other planet, and the fact that if it is Saturn or Jupiter, the other (green) planet is on the far side of the Sun, I'd want to rule out Saturn, which would be near its dimmest. So, I'm leaning toward Jupiter for the green planet, though, of course, it could be Venus, too.

Jupiter is a best match, Saturn is close. Stellarium says either is bright enough. (so If this is Jupiter, what's the third planet...)

As Pope, TimeLurker asked for everyone to wish for Cuegan to finally realize their love for each other. I had this song parody in my head for the past couple of dix, so it seems appropriate to post it now, although I wasn't able to finish it in time to get it on the previous NP.

Blindpost from the previous newpage to let you guys know that if you happen to be equipped with an Android device you can now download the unofficial OTC live wallpaper for the low, low price of molpycake.

At present all it does is fetch the latest newpix and display it on your homescreen. Naturally, you need a data connection to use it. I have a raft of other features planned, time permitting, including the ability to choose your frame and set it to cycle through Time at intervals of your choosing. However I decided to release this quick'n'dirty version as I will be quite busy later this week.

Thanks to mscha for allowing me to update the frame list from the wonderful csv on his site. And thanks to newpixbot (presumably) for putting it there in the first place.

Feature requests and bug reports are not only welcome but encouraged. And there will be bugs because I threw this together very quickly, while I was supposed to be working. Not ones that will harm you or your device though.

cake Seriously I want cake.

I love these. I sit for near a newpix just making my brain switch the spinning back and forth while it knows that shouldn't be possible.

The difference for us is that we have megan's hair we can see and she is not just an outline. We can see which way her head is facing based on her hair. This means that for it to be her right leg she would have to have a really flexible neck that can spin around 180 degrees. But who knows maybe stick figures heads can do a 360 or more.

Edit: Also here is an example of Cueball's head spinning around constantly

Hi folks-
I didn't mean to throw everyone off with the right leg left leg thing. Randall seems to have picked the left one pretty early and stuck to it.

And I'd describe that woman as "athletic" rather than "full figured" ;)

Cool App Wildhound!

One quick idea would be to get it to change to the last few frames as you slide between your say 5 homescreens. like if your on the right most homescreen it shows the current newpix and the ones left of this show consecutive previous newpix. This is probably not practical but still its a cool idea.

One additional idea: maybe it'd be better if the area above the newpix is white instead of black, i.e. an extension of the sky? (Black below the newpix already makes sense, as an extension of the ground.)
Won't be perfect if we ever get a starry night again (or if your app is updated to show historical images), but most of the time it will work out better, I think...

It looks okay in portrait mode on my Nexus 7 tablet (I guess there's not much you can do about the black area above and below), but in landscape mode, it's a bit suboptimal:

One additional idea: maybe it'd be better if the area above the newpix is white instead of black, i.e. an extension of the sky? (Black below the newpix already makes sense, as an extension of the ground.)
Won't be perfect if we ever get a starry night again (or if your app is updated to show historical images), but most of the time it will work out better, I think...

Great Idea but you forgot about the border at the top. for this to work you would have to manually strip the border from at least the top of the frame. It's always the same border pixels in all newpix.

Edit: also the perfect app which will probably be too hard to do would sample the top line of the commic (just below the border) and average the pixel brightness and paint the area above with that colour. This would then handle all frames of time fine.

Well. When a daddy molpy and a mommy molpy love each other very much, they get certain special feelings... oh no, that's a different speech, hang on...

This is the right one. Just a little something I knocked together, doesn't go into great detail and it's a simple song anyway, but might be of interest to some of you. If you like it, I could in future do another more in-depth video with a more complicated song, going into how I record guitars and other real instruments, if anyone's interested.

And yes, sometimes memorisation makes up for lack of skills :P. Like, I memorised the whole of a 15 minute song that's entirely in Finnish, music and lyrics, and played and sung it all... even though I don't actually speak any Finnish and just learned it phonetically. My pronunciation is probably pretty bad, but the memorisation was as much a feat as anything! I can also sing all of this from memory :P. I also ALMOST memorised "Every Major's Terrible" when it was first posted, with a view to singing and recording it myself, but then a few people got there before me (and there are quite a lot of videos of it around now) so I didn't bother. I'd quite like to fully memorise the original Major General's Song at some point though. I know a lot of it, but it's patchy.

Yes Megan's head was copied from the micro-trebuchet frame, that's why it's neater than the rest, sshhh.
I'd actually probably be a lot better if I got a graphics tablet. I was gonna get a wacom bamboo ages ago but it kept slipping my mind since music stuff always takes priority over art stuff with me... maybe it should go back on my list.

I'm trying my hardest to force my brain to see it the other way, but it only wants to see her spinning clockwise >.<

Sitting on the ground I hear the
Molpy chirp from way up high
You're right beside me
It's always been you and I
Long walk, blue skies
Castles left behind
Rivers and waterfalls
Time after -

Sometimes you laugh at me
For some dumb thing that I've done
But if I'm falling
I know to my side you'll run
Walking together
Up a mountainside
The hours just fly right by

(Chorus)
In this world, only us, and we wander free
Time after time
I am yours, you are mine, and we'll always be
Time after time

(Repeat Chorus)

Watching the sun set as
Stars light the evening sky
Knowing you're there for me and
Happy with the reason why
Feelings unspoken we understand
I reach out for your hand

(Repeat Chorus)

Walking together
A clear blue sky
The hours and days go by

(Repeat Chorus 2x)
Time after time
Time after time
Time after time
Time after time

Nice ottification!
Wait on.

Wowterful! I know almost nothing about music-making, but I found it interesting. :) And bravo on all the molpymolpymolpymolpyness.

Hmmm. Should write a script to post 40 messages in a row which I can run when it hits page 999

Edit: Why don't I just do it now with 320 messages in a row!

If you can get them to fart out the end of their horn it would make filling the tank a lot easier!

Now I have a picture in my head of modern green service stations with the pumps replaced with chained up Unicorns.

Nicely done, but all those monosyllabic words you wrote are multiphonic. Not that I can think up a decent synonym for "syllable" that's only got one.

Yeah who was the genius that gave the word syllable more than one?

It really should have just one syllable in its singular form and more than one when its plural.
