I might be buying a new(ish) car this weekend. Sent an e-mail to a couple dealers inquiring about two different cars, and I'm waiting for word from my bank letting me know the loan application is pre-approved.

Touched anything lately that you wouldn't normally touch? My girlfriend used to get weird reactions on her fingers that looked like somebody had lightly criss-crossed them with a razor. Not enough to draw blood, just to take off the very finest layer of skin from the top. Got bad enough that she didn't have fingerprints sometimes. Never figured out what it was, except maybe palm oil.

No. And it's like, not even my fingertips, but the rest of my fingers. Mostly between them.

I've had skin coming off my fingers for as long as I can remember. Several square centimetres a week, on average -- and thick layers, too. It's mostly on my thumbs and fingertips, though. The soles of my feet occasionally shed lots and lots of skin, too. I've peeled flaps as large as 2 by 3 centimetres off my feet on several occasions.

I've mostly gotten used to it, but yeah, it sucks.

Yeah I did that, kindof half-heartedly. While my hands are indeed dry I didn't wanna moisturize everything I touched. oh well. my phone can totally deal with this shit.

Same with feet, but bits of skin in between my fingers is a whole new level of annoying.

If you're leaving moisturizer on things you touch after moisturizing your hands, you're doing it wrong. You should rub it into your hands until it's basically gone/absorbed. You're trying to rub a chemical into your hands that will make your skin cells retain water better and give them a little to help them out, you aren't trying to create a layer of wet on your hands.

Based on the times I tend to get skin peeling off the soles of my feet (and sometimes hands and fingers), I think moisturising may not actually help. For me at least, it tends to happen when my feet/hands have been damp all day (usually because I've been sailing and wearing neoprene boots which keep the water in all day, but sometimes because it's just that warm). If it's something similar, moisturising probably won't help and you'll either have to get used to it or find some way to better stop your hands getting and staying damp.

The good news is that we can pretty much do whatever we want and nature will fix itself. (The bad news is that the fix is sometimes very bad for humans, like climate change...)

We'd have to fuck up really big to make Earth uninhabitable.

But it's relatively easy to make it uninhabitable by humans. Or multicellular life.

I'm tempted to try nerdbaiting.

See the success of this cracked "article" or that gawker article written by a woman about those dirty MTG nerds.

I'd just use a female name and avatar and push all the buttons like those people do. Maybe there is money to be made, but I wonder how much the writers get paid per pageview. I wonder which angle I would use though! I think the "women in videogames" thing can be milked some more, but there is already the Feminist Frequency kickstarter exploiting that niche.

Well, it's stages of difficulty there.

Uninhabitable by humans is easy, multicelluar life is medium, and single cellular life is hard mode. I mean, given that shit lives in volcanoes in the ocean or in sulfer springs or what the fuck ever, you'd probably have to shatter the planet to get them all... and even then some shit might just keep on trucking anyway because fuck you, that's why.

Which is exactly why I wouldn't be surprised if we found (possibly dormant) life on just about every gods-forsaken barren hell-hole of a rock in the inner solar system, plus every so-radioactive-it-should-be-glowing-in-the-dark chunk of ice floating near the gas giants. Really, the only variable is how difficult it is to get life started in the first place -- once you get it going, it's damn near indestructible. Just look at tardigrades: you can pop them in a pressure cooker and then let them cool off in the cold, hard vacuum of outer space, and those fuckers aren't even bothered by it.

so for the past ~week~ or so, i have been acting as a pseudo-therapist for alot of people from my new group of friends. i don't advertise, people just sort of come to me when they have issues. luckily nothing major that would require an ACTUAL therapist with a degree and license and everything.

im not sure how to feel about this.

on one hand, im happy to help people any way i can. on the other, its alot of responsibility to try and give advice and assist people with potentially life changing issues. im not entirely sure i trust myself, even though i do try to act in the persons best interests, as much as possible.

this exactly, the only time i will put myself in a position of steering someone to action is if its to directly benefit them, aka, seeking help if they are feeling suicidal, etc.

Maybe they're just venting? I definitely process by talking to understanding people. It's often less about the advice they specifically give, and more about being able to get my own thoughts ordered and examined, often by having them ask pointed questions or verify that I'm not over/under/sideways reacting, etc.

Or maybe you give better advice than you realize!

absolutely i do get the people that vent as well, they are nice to talk to sometimes.
the ones i get though, often have a problem, no solid idea on what to do with it, and alot of mixed emotions. the process usually goes something like

get the person calmed down and thinking rationally.

present the situation to them from a different viewpoint (mine)

ask some probing questions to get them thinking about thigns a little differently.

if they have not gotten something yet and taken off on an action of their own, i will present an example solution for them.

at this point, if they are not willing to try my solution, and have none of their own, not much i can do otherwise. im not a mind controller, i can't do things for them. but at the very least i got them into a position to work through the issue a little more rationally.
