Rule110 wrote:Question I've been meaning to bring up -- could the displacement (by gradual evaporation) of the mass of water in the Mediterranean after the straits were closed cause a shift in the earth's rotation axis? Could such a shift be big enough to account for the approximately 2.5 degree discrepancy between the map latitude (according to present day maps) and the apparent astronomical latitude?

Without even doing a rough order of magnitude calculation, I would say definitely not. The mass of the Mediterranean is a tiny fraction of the mass of the Earth. Even the tallest mountains on the planet are basically invisible on a globe drawn to scale. The Earth is HUGE compared to the features on it's surface.

That's what my intuition says too, but I'm not ready to completely write off the idea of an axis shift. Maybe some bigger changes took place elsewhere on the globe. (I've also read of some kind of 20,000 or 40,000 year cycle in the orientation of the axis -- not the precessional wobble of the axis's orientation relative to the stars, but a change in the position of the axis relative to the earth's landforms. Unfortunately, the only places this appears to be discussed on the Internet are global warming denial sites claiming that it's the true cause of the current observed warming, so it could be completely made up.)

Lucky Prediction: There will not be a Round II of the previous hand-to-paw melee. Lucky will warily eye Cuegan as they warily go past. However, Megan will try to tell Lucky to run away up the mountain to save itself. (Although it appears Lucky has an easy escape route anyhow, unless the water arrives at this altitude in one huge wave.) Possible emotional scene; we may see some cracks in their so-far all-business demeanor. Final payoff might be a foreshadow-y comment about the difficulty of getting cats to do what you want.

Emergency backup prediction. In case of total prediction failure, break glass.

I don't the the axis can shift like that. We have an enormous planet with a lot of momentum, and changing that a few degrees would require something catastrophic I would think. You might be referring to the magnetic poles shifting, which tends to happen every few hundred thousand years.

I have to wonder exactly how quickly they are descending back down the mountain. Again, I resort to my own experience as reference. My wife and I ascended to Siler's Bald, roughly 5 miles, in about 4 hours. We were quite exhausted coming back down, but made it in little over 3 hours. We found that all of our hikes were like that. Despite being tired, coming back was almost always a significantly shorter trip. I have to wonder if such times are scalable over distance. Can they keep it up long enough?

I kind of miss the old OTC. Back when it was just two people building a sandcastle. We didn't know why, where, when, nor who and many of us didn't really care. It was a simpler Time. Now we have plot and characters and suspense and a̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ (on second thought, there's no such thing as action when the action unfolds a newpix at a Time). It's a little less special now. I'm not saying I don't like plot, and the OTC is still the best thing in the entire universe, but it's just a little less special.
Now it's comatime. Wait well, and remember to...

Image Lucky not feeling so lucky today!

Wizpretz, I'm sorry you feel the OTC is less special now. For me, the recent events have made it even more epic-ly special than it already was. Before, there was a lot of mystery and puzzlement, and a lot of effort and labour went into trying to figure things out. Above all there was a lack of context - so many things we just didn't know. Now, a lot of answers have been provided, and although that implies a more conventional narrative, and removes some of the need for puzzle-solving, it has brought context and background to the picture. We now know who these people are, what's happening to their world and are deeply emotionally invested in the outcome of their journey. And there are still many more questions to answer.

For me, this frame captures the beauty of being where we are in the story now. Knowing what happened the last time we encountered Lucky (and knowing where the name came from!) makes this single 3-frame sequence a mini-story in itself: puzzling (is that rock a different shape?), alarming and then hilarious. Without the emotional and narrative build-up of the last 2900 frames, we wouldn't have that.

Hi again folks, blindposting from 1170. Thanks to whoever brought my first post (from around the time of the Mediterranean reveal) forward; I was nearly sated with ketchup at that point, but was called away for a heretical entertainment expedition and hope to reopen the ketchup bottle soon.

Regarding the pregnancy theory: the alt-text changes were the GLR's response to the first request he received to change a dirty diaper.

I'm glad I wasn't the only person creeped out by Rosetta and the Beanies (Cueball was too). Given that the GLR's typical work doesn't call for developing a mood over a prolonged period of a story, his ability to do so here was (is) amazing.

Also, my browser/monitor has never rendered the window-eyes in any original frame. I could only see them when they were highlighted.

Ok, help me out here, did I just get complimented? Or something else?

T'was Lovely; Delectable Ramblings!

Thanks!!!! I confess, that possibility was pretty far down my list of guesses.

Oops, maybe I should have clarified that I was pulling yer leg.

It's "Too Long; Didn't Read" :(

I propose this to be our adaptation of the acronym. I lurve it. :)

I know there's crazy-huge-exciting things happening in the OTC right now and that's a bad time for a forever-lurker (i.e., since the first page of this thread was *the* page of this thread) to make a first post that isn't directly working through a current dilemma, but this whole journey Randall's taken us on has left me increasingly impressed. Not just with him -- I think we've long known how stunningly creative, intelligent and meticulous he is, and how varied and wide-ranging his mastery is of a huge range of subjects. But with... us.

Or, well, you. I just got here as a poster. :)

I know this kinda thing has been said before -- at this point in the thread, I feel almost like every topic in existence has likely been said before -- but I have absolutely adored seeing how this thread has evolved with the story, and how different posters have come out of the woodwork to offer whatever expertise they have that matches the scene folks are analyzing. From...

  • the initial programming (and subsequent improvement work) done to track newpix and compare differences from one to the next;
  • to the architecture analysis as the sandcastle was built;
  • to the cartography work as Cuegan began their travels;
  • to the identification and classification of vegetation/animals and the attempt to place them geographically;
  • to the absolutely incredible star-chart analyses;
  • to the intricate dissection of a language heretofore unseen by man or beast;
  • to the ultimate pinpointing of Cuegan's specific location and time in Earth's history;
  • to the attempts to de-mustard Rosetta's halting translations (which is, at last, the one thing in the OTC that I feel I can finally do pretty well by myself, instead of waiting for others to do the expert analysis for me);
  • and everything else in between (including all the off-topic, colorful stuff, not least of which includes the development of what's nearly become an internal dialect only understood by people who post/lurk in this thread),

the entire comic -- and the epic thread I feel honored have an excuse to finally post in -- has highlighted the passion, the expertise, the diversity and the camaraderie of a stunningly large and diverse array of people from around the world. I'm amazed, and I'm humbled, and I'm tremendously thankful to all of you for the mind-boggling amount that I've learned about our past, our possible future, and the myriad pieces of knowledge and brilliance that each of us hold in our minds (and fingers) and choose to bring forward in order to educate, enlighten and share with their community.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. And to Randall for making it all happen. :)

Thank you for thanking us so profoundly.
