It gives me warm fuzzies to know the OTTers are still here and blitzers are still blitzing. Miss you all!

I will allways get warm fuzzies thinking of you OTTers. Which I do every workday. When my computer was upgraded to Windows 7 one of the first things I personalized was making my avatar match my OTT avatar.

Edit: Wow, I come back for a short spell and BOOM I'm Pope. You may choose to reminisce about your favorite times in the OTT, or ponder where it will go in the future.

Steakish BlitzGirl! I love the way you included actual OTTers! And thanks all for the comments on my version.

mscha wrote:(I love that the two of you made some of the exact same ottification choices.)
The thing practically ottified itself. In fact, I think 1305 is GLR's summoning circle, which I claim in the Most Holy Name of the One True Thread.

And it worked! Welcome back TimeLurker, cellocgw, and schwartzbewithyou!

cellocgw wrote:I'm depressed because Number One Son is in a weird state of mind (tho thankfully living safely and succeeding academically) and apparently won't come home for Xmas...
I was once that son. I turned out fine - I became an otter. :) Sometimes you just have to wait for it. I'm glad he's safe and academically doing well, and I hope the rest of his webfooted components soon find their One True Place in his life.

Yeah, I fell for the spoilevil too. It's an Ottish reflex.

Rather serendipitous that I poked my head up yesterday, only to read the other comic today and be so clearly reminded of the OTT :D

I appreciate the summoning that brought me forth, although next time, I would like to request a little less goat's blood involved. Its hard to get those stains out of my shirts.

Welcome Caswallon and Rule110! Yeah, sorry about the goat's blood - the goat kind of objected to being sacrificed and it got all over the place. Maybe next time we'll do something easier, like a broccoli.

So... what's going on in your life? Hope all is molpish!

I've just been using the "I can't believe it's not Goat's Blood" for my summoning needs. All of the power, and polyunsaturated hydrogenated oil, none of the killing of goats.

Fairly molpish, thanks! Getting ready for the holidays, dressing, undressing, making exciting underwear...

On the downside, I lost a wolpy a few mips back, and due to expenses of trying to avoid same, will be having what my wife calls a "Cratchit Christmas." You know, homemade gifts and such. (I'm pondering whether a Time t-shirt would be a good gift for someone who would have no idea what it refers to...)

I'd stick with the goat's blood despite the drawbacks. It was definitely the sumCirc rather than the othercomic that worked in my case, because the first thing I saw in the thread (having gone to the presentpage to see if anything was going on) was an OTTification of that comic, and my first thought was, "how odd, I don't remember that XKCD strip, and how come no one OTTified it long before?"

So... if it won't terribly spoil a future blitz... did anything ever come of that varying sequence of post-Time frames?

Is there an interesting story to this? Or is this part of the Crochet Christmas you were referring to?

I'm sorry about your wolpy - they are just like family.

Maybe it will get them curious? Could be an Otter in the making.

Rule110 wrote:did anything ever come of that varying sequence of post-Time frames?
So far the most successful theory is that the sequences are keyed to the first digit of the (heretical) day of the month. So far, no theories as to the meaning of the actual sequences however. BlitzGirl and jjjdavidson have done poetry (scroll to Epilog Cycle Poems, halfway down) based on the pattern, I have written a hymn using the pattern as the harmony, and I think somebody used the sequence as the notes of a tune but I can't find it right now.

There's been lots of treeish stuff happening here, even after the End Of Time. Pull up a chair and join in!

You are, in fact, entirely correct! (I won't post the answer specifically, because it's right there in your spoiler.)
I actually made up that puzzle well before I knew what the actual answer was (I thought it was much smaller), but I did check it before posting (and was surprised, but thought the fact you noticed was interesting anyway).
The answer doesn't change, by the way, if we allow ten-digit numbers as well (which is probably relatively easy to prove).
I wonder whether we could get more interesting results by using a base other than 10 (and considering numbers consisting of b-1 or b different digits). I don't have the programming background to check it though (and of course we would miss the "power of two" example).
There are two films that I particularly like.
One of them is a science-fiction dramatic comedy involving a boy who accidentally travelled in time. Extremely popular when it originally came out in 1985, it retains a major cult following to this day.
The other one, of course, is Back to the Future.

So many old faces being brought in by the latest othercomic! I can't help but think he was inspired by us there, like in the footnote labyrinth one way back. Or maybe that's just the OTTer in me trying to make everyone related.

It's been discussed before, but I don't think an update can hurt. I was looking at page counts of otherthreads on the fora, to see if anything comes close to the content of the OTT. There's only one that's even close, and it currently exceeds us at 2115 pages. However, it's been going since late Aug., 2007, producing 334.12 pages/ year; while we've managed 1667 pages since late March to nowlate Dec., at 2000.4 pages/ year. By my rough1 maths, at this rate, we should surpass it between three and four mips from now -- or just about a yip from the Dawn of Time! :D

late dec. For round mip counting.

Spoiler:
In four mips, I have us averaging 666.8 pages :twisted:

Yeah, the molpygoats are new. Don't worry, all blood was willingly donated by the goats and thoroughly analyzed before being used in the summoning ritual.

I feel a touch of pity for the HAT (Hidden App Thread) ... it's sort of like an Alternate Universe to the OTT ...... which has no video ads either ("F'ing, or any other kind"); however, here, we have names, so no one needs to be reminded who we are ... except, perhaps, in the existential sense ... :) ...

Preview EDIT: Hi, Goggalor, and all the basement dwellers who were summoned back today! 8-)

This has only just been overtaken by the OTT, and we probably won't overtake this seaish monster for a few yips. But I think the OTT is now the third-largest thread on the fora.

1658 and 5002 respectively.
It's easy to get access to those forums if you want to (ucp.php?i=167), though the current forum mustard makes the process rather slow.

Not sure, or how I missed them. I figured the longest threads would still be relatively active and near the top of their categories, so I just looked at the first page of each. When I click patzer's links, it wants me to log back in, and then I just get the spinning blue wheel.

Spoiler:
If you can't click through to the thread I linked, it's "unfetched hashes and turtle excluding devices" (random thoughts) under General.

Timeland is a wonderful place. But some of the people here are not so.

On my arrival in the land, in which I came by through a portal in a wall, I found myself rather alone, save from the various creatures that adorn the land. I decided that I would try and find other life, in the hope that I would not bump into hostile forces.

It was obvious that this was a time post-Zanclean Flood. I found the castleraft on which the Forty sailed, but no signs of life were present. I do not have any skill with rafts, so I did not voyage on it. Instead, I walked in the other direction.

I walked for what seemed like many ages, though it could not have been more than a couple of hours. I hoped to stumble across the Forty, or maybe some Beanies, or even the people in the hills. I did not care who at that point, I needed to know that the world definitely was or wasn't deserted, and the only way to find out was to find some people.

At this point, I heard voices. I could not, as yet, listen to what was being said, but I could tell roughly where they were coming from. I followed them, and in my anticipation, I moved as silently as possible. It took little time to make my way onto that clearing where that group was.

As soon as I had stumbled onto their patch, they stared at me, silently. Then one, a man who seemed to be the leader of the tribe, stood up.

"Who are you?" he asked. He had a very loud voice, and it echoed through the clearing easily.

"My name is Minim," I replied, nervously. I felt as though I was back doing a presentation at school, and I could barely keep my nerve.

There was a lot of muttering between the tribespeople, and one called to the loud-voiced man: "I reckon she is one of the people by the sea,"

"Well, are you?" the loud voice rang in my ears.

"No, sir, I am not," I replied.

"And yet you cannot look me in the eye? Where are you from, if not by the sea?"

"I'm from another land," I replied. "And another Time."

"Oh," he said. "I severely doubt that. I believe you, young lady, you are being deliberately deceptive. I therefore have no option but to send you to the cells. Jokie?"

A large, burly man appeared. I was led by him to a small room a fair distance away, and locked in. I could tell that Jokie was now going away. I looked to see what was in this room.

There was a man.

"Are you one of them?" he asked, pointing to the door. I shook my head.

"Oh. So are you one of the castle people?"

"No," I replied. "Wait - are you Cueball?"

"I thought it was only The Watchers who called me that,"

"The Watchers?"

"Yes, the one you know as LaPetite told me," he said. "Well, you know her as LaPetite - I hear she has another name which she uses when she is with you,"

Wow, what a joyful ketchup todip! I can't believe all the OTTers who have been summoned up from the basement: TimeLurker (which I first typed as TimeLurkey :D ), Rule110, cellocgw, schwartzbewithyou, LaserPlumb, Goggalor, patzer, Ebonite!! And I was so happy to see that MistyCat is almost with us--you shall reach the end! (especially now that you've made it past T** **d). And there's a new face! Hi, Coyoty!

And there were two awesomeful ottifications of the OTTercomic--treeish and steakish, BlitzGirl and ucim!

ggh wrote:
lmjb1964 wrote:
ggh wrote:This extra code was an awesome hint, because it's the same bit about dangerous time travel he sent before, and that allowed me to reverse engineer it. So to decode this, you turn the whole thing into binary and the least significant 11 digits give the frame number, the next three give the quote number, and the rest give the index into the quote (starting from 0, so 1 is actually the second word/0. There's a small amount of ambiguity, because 11 digits isn't quite enough for the frame number - when it's 2048 or above, that 1 gets added to whatever's in the quote section. I can explain further if that doesn't make sense.

I'd say it's all Greek to me, but I think Greek would make more sense. And I don't speak Greek. :?

OK, I do understand that it's referring to frame numbers and quotes. But I don't understand how you would turn the whole thing into binary, or how you would determine what the least significant 11 digits are. Are they the digits that haven't accomplished anything?

It's why 1 is the loneliest number. :(
The slow way to turn the codes into numbers is (spoilered for length)
Spoiler:
to turn each letter into a number according to A=0, B=1, C=2...Z=25 and then interpret that in base 26, so that ABCDE is 0*264+1*263+2*262+3*26+4 = 1910. This is painful. Fortunately, jovialbard kindly sent me this javascript function that just returns the answer (once I figured out how to open a javascript console):

Code: Select all

function decode(str) { total = 0; for (var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) { total *= 26; total += str.charCodeAt(i) - 65; } return total;}
decode('ABCED');

When you posted your PM, I was suspicious of how the first and fourth letters were always early in the alphabet. Three letters is plenty to encode the frame number in base 26, so I converted all those first three letters into frame numbers and started looking at the dialogue for those frames, looking for any clues. When one of them included the word "traveled" and the one before had the word "time", I realized that the coded phrase might well be the same as the uncoded one. Knowing what the answer had to be, I just blundered around in the dark 'til there was a pattern in the remaining letters that fit. It turned out to only be apparent to me once I converted to binary (which can be done by hand, but why?

I still never would have gotten the slightly different later codes, except for that PM to me with the same phrase and mentioning a different shift; more blundering in the dark looking for a pattern. It makes sense though with Aluisio's poem-clues in retrospect - in binary (forgive me, computer-sciency types) a shift of the digits to the left or right is a multiply or divide by 2 - for example 100 is 4, 1000 is 8 and 10 is 2. Sure enough, the different fields for the index into the quote, the quote number and the frame start at the 14th digit, the 11th digit and the 1st digit (counting from the right - the least significant digit, the 1's place.

At first, I'd run the code, convert to binary using that site, parse the fields, reconvert to decimal, look up the quote and start counting words, or later letters. But then, this javascript thing looked like it might be a time-saver, so I found:

Code: Select all

function truncate(n) {
  return Math[n > 0 ? "floor" : "ceil"](n);
}
and wrote

Code: Select all

function frame(int){return int%2048;}
function quote(int){return truncate(int/2048%8);}
function letter(int){return truncate(int/16384);}
function pieces(str){return quote(decode(str))*1000000000+frame(decode(str))*1000+letter(decode(str));}
function piecesalt(str){return (quote(decode(str))-1)*1000000000+(frame(decode(str))+2048)*1000+letter(decode(str));}
which meant I could go straight from the five-letter code to something I could easily see the quote number, frame and index number in without having to go through the binary myself. Then I'd just have to look up the right quote, and cut-n-paste it into

Code: Select all

function countin(str,int) { return str[int];}
and voila! a letter emerges. Do it 26 times and you get:
