That window in the background is as pretty as ever. I remember, when I was away for a long time, and was ketchuping, I accidentally saw a RossetONG on the top of the newpage. Thankfully it was one where she wasn't talking, so I wasn't that spoiled, but it was very confusing at the time, since I was just past the long night, and nothing remotely like that had happened yet.
I made my avatar, Buffygirl hatted it, Yappo smileyed it and ggh taroted it!

Folks, I hope you won't be offended if I slowly disappear... OTT isn't really my cup of tea given that I missed the first ~2020 posts...

Well, you aren't anymore, but as first poster on a new page, you became page pope, entitled to one (optional) decree, subject to certain provisos, of course. You're also welcome to a "Revealer the Recent" title, if you'd like it.

Should I?

Nah, this seems much less like what I was looking for. Thanks for the tip though!

ChronosDragon wrote:Just to briefly add to the (now concluded) discussion on forum crawlers, in case anyone ever wants to do the same thing, I'd highly recommend using javascript to do the actual parsing. The js libraries for DOM parsing would make your life infinitely easier. Something like a browser extension that could output a JSON file or a node.js script, using one of the jQuery-alikes, would be quite powerful for you. Other languages just tend to deal very awkwardly with XML and HTML (which is technically a subset of XML, if you format it properly).

Yes, this is what I'd do if I needed to.

It's interesting that you perceive the current posting rate as “high volume”. Right now we have 1 new page (containing 40 postings) or less per day. When 1190: Time still ran, 10 new pages per day weren't unusual …

Well, consider it from my perspective: just keeping up with all your reactions in here takes more of my time than keeping up with all of the rest of the xkcd forums together.

Feel free to stay for a while. We have TimeAfterTime stories worth reading, Time-related artwork, songs, stories, movies, …

Thanks for the invitation! But sorry, I think I'll pass...

If someone wants to set up their own copy of the OTT mirror - now they can do it.
I made it available.

It's all related.

Postby balthasar_s » Thu Jul 17, 2014 7:38 pm UTC

It's all related!
Some time ago, on the secret base on the moon we were working on an "object generator"& (first mention in 2010). which is a device used for generating all kinds of objects that can be generated by it. I's kind of like a 3d printer but much better.

And now, in the Kieryn's Fractories, in the secret underground base they are working on a "universal constructor" which has exactly the same purpose!

Do you all build such kind of things in your secret bases?

& this may become RELATED somewhere in the future.

BRACE YOURSELF, PUNSAW IS COMING

Postby mrob27 » Thu Jul 17, 2014 8:14 pm UTC

第三十五章

(chapter 34)

Morobu now sees that this Cueball tile has been left by another pilgrim, on a previous day.

明るく澄んだ朝。マーシュの少ない植物、日の無海の鳥。
私はこれらの米水田全体で、三姉妹の丘の中心まで継続します。
            時間ドラゴン、第五月十四日(金)。

He reads this aloud. "A bright clear morning. Fewer marsh-plants, no sea-birds for a day. I shall continue across these rice-fields, and up the center of the three sister-hills. ChronosDragon, Friday the 14th day of the 5th month. It is a travelogue entry, just like mine, except xey use old-style dates. But what does it mean?"
Morobu turns back to the cat — but there is no cat to turn to. While Morobu was reading, MistyCat had strolled away as silently as he had arrived.
He turns to look to both sides, and behind him. He closes his eyes, counts to three, and reopens them (remembering a tale that cats sometimes sneak in when you have your eyes shut) — but no MistyCat. It is almost like a vanishing dream — but the tile in his hands is still very real.
Morobu carefully replaces the tile of ChronosDragon where it had been, then examines the others. These too tell the status of Searchfu pilgrims — one named balthasar_s and another using the curious name NoMouse. They were each here at different times and seemingly heading in different directions.

Jplus wrote: OTT isn't really my cup of tea given that I missed the first ~2020 posts...

No problem — though if we're counting, you would have missed the first 80,800 posts... not that anyone's counting :D

SBN wrote: You're also welcome to a "Revealer the Recent" title, if you'd like it.

Should I?

It's just the title (see OTT:1528:18) given to anyone who posts here for the first time. The presumption, usually supported by the well-thought-out nature of such posts, is that they were "lurking" for a while and have now "revealed" themselves. I've always interpreted it to be a moving title, given to whomever is the most recent to have revealed themselves. If the poster has never posted anywhere on the forum before, the post itself is a "firstpost", but that doesn't apply here.

ucim wrote: Welcome back Jplus! Yeah, it's been a long needle-pulled thing.

Timborme and I and the bots certainly have access to a sort of replicator facility in the TARDIS, but it isn't used much. It's a long way down little-used corridors from the areas where we spend our time, and it seems to break down a lot.
Instead, I'll usually create the needed object(s) within a simulation, then fly the TARDIS and land inside the simulation to retrieve it/them. Then fly back out, which is the trickier part. I've sometimes found myself inside a story for mips.

I like seeing these UNGs with Rosetta in the castle. I was blitzmaiding the first Time they appeared in the thread, so I missed a lot of the experience.

I replaced the shape in your avatar background with a sandcastle from Time.

I suppose this is one of those many things only faithful OTT readers can understand.

I didn't catch it on the first go-around, but balthasar subtly changed the silhouette in the background of your avatar to that of the 1190 sandcastle:

Sciscitor wrote:Ok folks ... update on the quote tree graph (up to post 22300ish).
This time it's the full graph. And with full I mean FULL... all the 835 people who have quoted or have been quoted or both and all the 8757 quotes along with all the names, color coded average posting length, size coded posting count per user, width and color coded quote count and (at least for the main quoters) directional hints (also known as arrows)1.
I can append only a compressed minified thumb here (about 1.3 MB), the links go to the original sized 4096x4096 PNG (15.6 MB) and a SVG (4.1 MB) version. But beware, these images are not for the faint of heart or low on RAM.
I call them "The Constellations of Time". Enjoy.

Wow! What would such a graph look like now, with the page count over 2000? (Specifically, there are 2027 pages at the time of me writing this. And my Blitz is up to page 570 now...)

Well, Sciscitor's last constellation (#5) was unveiled on NP1848, during the Furious Doodling. I call it "the one in which my name is embarrassingly seaish". (You'll blitz it eventually.) It's interesting comparing that latest constellation to the NP500s version; the core group of OTTers who stayed in the thread after T** **d emerges, and many names at the core in the old dips have moved to the edges.

Eclipse of the HES! And partial eclipse of ggh, too. There are actually quite a few riverish names obscured beneath mine in that one.

nice duet, xuys. I wonder what today's constellation would look like. I feel like the middle-class of poster has fallen away. ( :P ). You either post daily-ish or almost never. That's how it seems to me, anyway.

Of course. The only other outsiders cuegan have ever met are the hill people, who are total jerks. Of course they're so wary!
