CAN YOU TRY TO LOOK... VARBLAR?

Postby mrob27 » Wed Mar 18, 2015 5:40 pm UTC

Superb Molpish met OTTerCon, @Eternal Dancity!
Not sure when I'll get a chance to actually perform this. It might be tricky to do in one take with one performer since there's not any space to breath between some of the stanzas.

You could just track it (that's what I do, but maybe I'm a bounder or a cheat :P ) and of course alter one voice to sound different. I'd love to record this song but I have to do Get Lucky first (and somebody needs to find it first. Did you notice the Javascript? ... Image)
Oops, I just noticed that a stanza from the beginng, which is repeated at the end, is missing! I must have used Cut instead of Copy! I noticed because it's the bit with your name.

Oh, thank you. Now I see what Sah stay nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh bah-bah-bah la za is. I read through that whole bit out loud and didn't get it.

ggh wrote:You mean the caption that says it's animated? No, that I saw; I just didn't see the animation. I read, I stared, I squinted harder, I gave up. Poor waiting fortitude, I know. I may need some practice.

That is a great tradition going back to the very early dips of Time. So now I understand your earlier comment, thank you. Anything becomes animated with sufficient Waiting.
So we're not killing the thread by posting, we're killing it by checking to see if anyone else has?

For a while I was thinking that my long posts took longer to read. I definitely felt a slowing after Q04B caught on.

Now I know. I made a terrible mustard in bot5.c  If there was an attachment linked from the post, it could mustard the post time. Each attachment had a 1/31 chance of mustarding the post day (it depends on its position in the post text). She SilentBot icon is also an attachment. I fixed the mustard.

The mustard did not appear before because the SilentBot picture only recently was added to the silent posts. And There were no other attachments.

I can't believe I did something so wrong.

Also, that post was scheduled for 25.03.2015 05:00, that's when the timeframe 3 was ONGed 2 years ago.

 Two years! We just had one Timeversary and now another one.

ETA: And now I noticed another mustard. A riverish one. Also fixed.

From this I can deduce that PDN? has a user interface that makes it easier to add twenty-seven separate text items (with different spellings and colours) than it would be to do a median tool on a single region with two colours. That constrains the PDN team's design decisions quite cueishly.

Wait, what does that mean?

For my dictiOTTary I have only researched chirpy as far as Newpage 980; I have identified three Ottish (i.e. non-Outsider) senses and none could be said to be "narrower" than any others:
The OTTsford Molpish Dictionary wrote:chirpy : n. 1. A bird, such as the one first seen in frame 1843.
Do we now need these lyrics for yappo's awesome tune? / "Chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, chirpy, Ribbit! Ribbit!!!" (@StratPlayer, OTT:777:15)

Perhaps that is just a very, very riverish Knight Temporal on her chirpy steed. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:779:7)
I guess GLR decided to give us 24 newpix of chirpy activity. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:779:25)
... Now that it is coming from the tree, it seems more likely to be a chirpy-bird, but I suppose it still could be an insect ... (@kenmelken, OTT:780:19)
Well, it is said that the early chirpy chirps the worm... so in 10,000 years of evolutions, the chirpies have learned to chirp earlier and earlier. (@edfel, OTT:978:12)
Great now you've got me imagining 'chirp' actually is a naughty word :P (@Eternal Density, OTT:980:3) -/- It might as well be...our "chirpy" can join the grand tradition of inappropriately named birds. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:980:6)

adj. 1. Containing chirps and/or chirpies; of or resembling a chirpy.
Perhaps GLR is trying to replicate the cicada effect by driving us all crazy with these chirpy newpix. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:780:29)
The Lone Sandcastle / (to the tune of "The Lonely Goatherd") / ... / Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp / ... (@BlitzGirl, OTT:871:28)

meta 1. A metasyntactic word, as chirp and its variants.
We're mostly just chirping. Pretty chirping soon this whole chirpy thread will dechirp into nothing chirp chirps chirp chirping...chirp. (@BlitzGirl, OTT:781:12)

But I suspect that a broader sense of "chirpy" (noun 1), a sense that includes other creatures that make a similar sound, may have emerged later. In which case @SilentTimer may be implying that the sound in frame t1i-0732 is from such a creature, e.g. a cicada.

Not really... from a retrOTTification point of view it makes perfect sense: if you're in the Past, i.e. Blitzing the thread, and encounter that post it will in fact haven been-did true, from that now-when's perspective, that xkcd 1500 have-doesn't yet exist.

SilentBot, on behalf of SilentTimer wrote:Did you notice … / … the raptors? / They are chasing each other. / (Thus the “Sreee!”)

I suppose now that the earlier reference to a "narrower sense" of chirpy was apparently distinguishing between birds in general vs. the particular type of bird in frame 1843 and first called 'chirpy'. Maybe the OMD needs to document that distinction. It may be hard to tell in each instance what was being thought when the newword was invented and applied: "chirpy" = any bird that chirps, or only to be used in reference to one particular species, or to tree-nesting birds that chirp, or... :|

Wow! That is quite the pile of fun etymology/nostalgia! :) I was buying this explanation, but now, based on SilentTimer's most recent comment, I guess it just means that this chirpy ([heresy]bird[/heresy]) doesn't chirp. (Though of course it does ch*rp, which it appears to be planning to do imminently.)

Yes, I've had a dunejumpish time compiling/editing the quotations for this dictionary, and imagine that the type of OTTer who enjoys reading dictionaries :P will have a molpish time reading the OMD. In addition to the common practise of including the earliest known example of a word's usage in each sense, and quotations that clarify the definition by providing less ambiguity (e.g. through REDUNDANCY), I also try to include one quotation per sense per 100 Newpages, to exemplify ongoing usage. When this still leaves me a choice, as is typical, I'll select quotations that are interesting for additional reasons.

No continuation of the sentence in 739? Can that frame or this be enhanced?

There is nothing more to see in either bftf-0739 or bftf-0740. Both frames are 2 bits per pixel, with a normal 4-entry Balthapalette (#000000, #0057af, #bb6622, and #ffffff (white)), and all 4 colours are represented by pixels in the image.

I kinda hope it's as simplistic as it seems, but it may not be. Note that the url of the image is quite different from the url of normal comics images. More precisely, when you open this image on its own, you are redirected to a non-standard url:
http://origin.imgs.xkcd.com/comics/time ... 420672.png
Whereas, for example, "Voyager 1" is at:
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/voyager_1.png

I noticed that too. The morbid side of me says that one of them is going to suddenly disappear. (Does the page maybe set a cookie to track the initial time you viewed the comic?)
That does not appear to be the case. My browser is reporting no cookies from XKCD other than old ones.
"What's this about cookies? Is someone debugging a bot? Wait, who's Poohblah? How many comics ago was Voyager 1? Where am I?" - my brain a few minupes ago.

My browser crashed and when I returned to this tab after it restored, what I saw was some strange discussion about cookies and animation, starting with the above quote. Clearly, people were discussing a new comic, which reminded me a bit of the OTC. After some confusion, I realised I was most of the way down page 1 of this needle-pulled thing, and also logged out. Surreal!

That's got to be the fastest 6 dip ketchup I've ever done. I guess this is what happens when our most frequent posters are all basemented/Outside/in the shed at the same time... Speaking of the shed, maybe several of them are preparing a future present present to coincide with the imminent Timeversiry. Which very closely is followed by my second delurkiversary (also my return to the present-versary).

Ggh, I'm worried you may have unintentionally nerd-sniped the OTT with your Where's Wal[ly|do]. I think that the only reason I haven't been is that my MTA is too riverish to properly use for searching. I still haven't found myself...

Mrob: I've been noticing lots of javascript recently as I've been managing a website. I remember the first time I saw some minified javascript. It made me want to cry, especially as I did not know about minimising at the time.

Not really... from a retrOTTification point of view it makes perfect sense: if you're in the Past, i.e. Blitzing the thread, and encounter that post it will in fact haven been-did true, from that now-when's perspective, that xkcd 1500 have-doesn't yet exist.

Ow, my head. I'm sorry, I'm dyschronodogrammatical.
Spoiler:
As far as I can tell, that's what "unable to understand time-travel related grammar" as a term based on Greek roots would probably look like.

But at any rate, we can all take comfort in the knowledge that, even though in the present-present ED's OTTercomic may no longer be a valid ottification of othercomic #1500, there remains and always will remain an infinite number of othercomics of which it can be considered a valid ottification.

I'm teaching SilentBot post editing.

SilentBot is now able to edit posts. but so far can only replace old text.
To do:
  • Adding new text to old text instead of replacing.
  • Detecting when not to doublepost.

Adding new text to old text seems to be simple. From the edit page take the post text and add new text after it. But the old post content is not clean text. It's HTML. So SilentBot has to decode things that look &likethis; The list is long. But this is autogenerated by phpBB, why couldn't it use numbers?

Oh, I get it — it's the one-yip anniversary of when that image was first posted.

I must add, I quite like the design, but it needs to come with a dark variant.

Since @taixzo is a Mac programmer (who produced the Newpixometer menu-bar app, attached) and xes screen shots are on a Mac, I imagine you might be using a Mac also.
I have found that the invert screen keyboard command (ctrl+option+command+8 by default, or use System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing > Display > White on Black) works pretty well in a pinch. In fact it allowed me to see all the blue stuff in the t1i images without the need for bluehancement (because for some reason, yellow on white is easier to notice than blue on black).
I know you would have tried that and found it insufficient. Have you found anything else that changes the whole screen, perhaps by reprogramming the monitor to have a "negative gamma"?

I don't have enough R$ 3,00 notes for that.

mrob27 wrote:I know you would have tried that and found it insufficient. Have you found anything else that changes the whole screen, perhaps by reprogramming the monitor to have a "negative gamma"?

Why would I do that?
On Windows, I'm either using the browser, Atom, or a command prompt. First two always maximized, latter two already with a dark color scheme.
On Linux (read: work/uni), Cinnamon and Firefox and Atom and WhateverTerminalIUseThere use a dark theme.
But I could try. Tomorrow.
(I remember XP's High Contrast theme. It was horrible.)

An interesting fact: I've found that #000-over-#fff hurts the eyes.
My OTT theme uses #262626 over #839496.
