Did you notice …
… what Ms. Frizzle is doing?
Spoiler:
She has tangled the loop around the target (a seat). Now she is contracting the forward end of the pole and retracting the device, pulling the entangled target out of an imaginary “cave”. (For this test run she chose a terrain with a slope similar to what they are going to encounter in the real “cave”.)

Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

Spoiler:

Did you notice …
… the device?
Spoiler:
Megan Image and ucim did.
Ms. Frizzle is untangling the rope from the seat she used as a target.
The device is lying on its side again, like when Cueganzzle came to the tower. The horizontal wheel which guides the loop is prominently visible at the forward end of the pole. The vertical wheel which supports the device is lying flat, almost invisible. The rope dangling from the aft end of the pole is lying on the floor, beneath the tower. It slightly moved while Ms. Frizzle was operating the device.
… the treeishness?

Ms. Frizzle Image did.

HELLO, I AM MRORL, AND MY NAME HAS 5 LETTERS!

Postby mrob27 » Fri May 08, 2015 12:52 am UTC

Within a dip or so you'll be able to begin reading Mrorl's OTTronic Bard, the 5th story in my bOTTeriada series, via the reflector skillfully constructed by @balthasar_s up on the secret moonbase, or by Waiting a bit for it to be posted here to the OTT by the equally molpish mrImagebdexbot.
In conjunction with that story I have created a real-life OTTtronic Bard, though it's still a bit rusty in spots so don't tease it too much. (It might also occasionally pun, but only in ways that are seen in the OTT.) It's Time for mrob27's

700th Post OTTronic Botpoetry Slam!

Lately I've been building bots… well, actually, I've been doing it mip in and mip out for well over 400 mips now. But this last mip has been fun, because I've assembled a few existing bots, and pieces of bots, and other little bits of <computery stuff> I had lying around, and created something that is either completely Safety-Hatted-Cueishly insane, or pretty molpishly treeish.
The first part of the construction is an old standby for creating seaish amounts of epsionishly hilarious 'literary' nonsense, an Nth-order Markov chain text generator, also called "dissociated press" or a "travesty generator". Mine is second-order and word-based by default, meaning that it picks each new word based on the previous two, with the result that in the output, any three consecutive words appear in the same order somewhere in the source text. Here is a tiny sample of what you get if you feed it Romeo and Juliet:

Shakespeare, via travesty, wrote:
ROMEO [To JULIET] If I do remember well where he comes: so please
you, let me now be left alone, And let the nurse cursed in the stars
Shall bitterly begin his fearful date With this night's watching.
CAPULET No, not till Thursday; there is no world without Verona walls,
But purgatory, torture, hell itself. Hence-banished is banish'd from
the valour of a tomb: Either my eyesight fails, or thou look'st pale.
ROMEO And I'll still stay, to have thee gone: And yet 'not proud,'
mistress minion, you, Thank me no prouds, But fettle your fine joints
'gainst Thursday next, To go with me, and wherefore? …

The second bot, is something I made for my first xkcd 1052 OTTification, a Journey of Discovery (in Words the OTTers Wrote for Me) back on NP 1531. It was OTT-specific, but so much fun I later built another suitable for use with any source text. It scans any source text, of finite or infinite length, and extracts sequences of words that fit a desired syllable/meter pattern. For example, it can scan the OTT looking for haiku (like @Angelastic's project from the early dips, which is what first inspired me to start writing these bots). Given the full text of the King James Bible, and asked to find trochaic octameter, it generates output like this:

The King James Bible, via pmgrep, wrote:

fire in the day of the assembly:and it came to pass at (DEU 9:11)
:he doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow (DEU 10:18)
with familiar spirits or a wizard or a necromancer: (DEU 18:11)
the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer while his heart is (DEU 19:6)
 …

Most recently, I made a rhyming dictionary. I started the way @Angelastic did, by creating phonemes, a little program that could feed words to the Apple MAC OS X speech synthesis API and get their pronunciations, including syllables and stress. (The source code is here: phon-104.m). Then I scanned the entire OTT and generated word-frequency data, and added all the words in my "standard English" dictionaries and word lists, and fed each word into phonemes to make a pronunciation dictionary. Another tool, called rhyme, allows me to actually look up words and find candidate rhymes, sorted so the most commonly-used words appear first.
This was originally to support normal, manual poetry-writing, such as the work I did for Mrorl's OTTronic Bard. But once I have a rhyming dictionary, and a metrical scanner, and a travesty generator, and a bunch of other bits of <computery stuff> just lying around and yearning to tickle the Muse, why not put them all together to make a poetry-writing bot? And that, my dear fellow OTTers, is what I have done. mrorls-ottronic-bard creates stanzas of any desired meter and rhyme scheme, and optionally containing text matching a regular expression:

Asked to create amphibrachic trimeter in AABB containing molpy- or -molpy compounds, mrorls-ottronic-bard wrote:
Will there be did one of the day and it's making
The hedgemolpy is in the one to be looking
 Essential idea of development over
 Sustainabilizer Sustainabilizer
The elements even for BlitzGirl's arrival
That it was about to be tasting a little
  Are aliens harvesting molpybugs trying
In favor of eating them she will be playing
Sustainabilizer and I was a welcome
When there was a molpybat might be the problem
That well I will vote for him take that with colors
For adding the added convenience of blitzers
 …

So, there's that. Yay bots! Image
Somewhat ironically, I did all this work to make something that I actually did not use very much for the story. It would have been far easier just to do the rhyming dictionary and skip all the rest. But not nearly so dunejumpish.

 — mrob27 Image, celebrating 700 posts.

"Sustainabilizer", being a double-amphibrach, appears frequently in polyamphibrachic dissociated OTTish.

bOTTeriada goes ONG

Postby balthasar_s » Fri May 08, 2015 4:11 am UTC

the mrONGbdex story continues.

Code: Select all

unmolpish, such was the awesomefulness of these productions. New businesses sprung up, merchandising hats, t-shirts, magnets, &&c. expressing each new memeification arising from the latest fad in the threads. There were video hotogs and actual hotdogs with ketchup and mustard, each cross-promoting the other; new forum-devoted religions sprung up; and people began to organise meetups and bOTTification conventions. The planet's economy showed clear signs of improvement. There was even talk of dismantling the massive Wall that had long kept the trollers and flamers from direct contact.
Sensing that something had gone amiss, @@Gursagar and @@Simidirkar sent after Mrorl and Balthacarius respectively, but the bOTTifactors were just then boarding their ships; pursuing leads from eyewitnesses, the hapless assistant of @@Simidirkar reached the Wall just in time to see the flames of the Castraftle *LEML*'s thrusters high in the sky far to the east. That which they had planned had come to pass: before the eyes of the mortified, infuriated Mods, both fora joined together into a great bOTTified community that would battle no more.
The planet safely far behind them, the bOTTifactors discussed their adventure. Stunned by the creative renaissance that had risen mainly from the Simdrikarnan side, Mrorl realised the value of an Ottish vocabulary; Balthacarius though would take no credit, believing the results to be entirely the inevitable consequence of Gontalmannas' laws. But having experienced several dips of pelting, he graciously apologised for his basement inquisition of Mrorl, which the latter forgivingly accepted, and with no hard feelings.

Thanks for explaining the wheelstick, @SilentTimer! There was no way I was going to figure all that out!

Aye, Kilmarnock cake! Image Hmmm, very nice. Thanks @ZoomanSP!

I imagine it is not leopard-smashing this time. In USB (Unglish, Squarish, Beanish), the triangles are the Beanish language, and Cuegan speak Circle.

So far as I know, all of the avatars were voluntary. The FF00BFs needed to do so before being eligible to participate in the Madness-related forum games, and it had to be based on the "Wee Free Men" book cover image. But the avatars were changed by everyone themselves.

So, the next smiley repository will be on np2800?

Could be. Somemolpy would have to be paying attention. I didn't even think of it until I was getting ready to post and noticed I was about to become the NGSVMPC of 2300.

Wait for it.

Did you notice …
… the nuclear reactor?
Spoiler:
… how Cueganzzle are carrying the device?
Spoiler:
Ms. Frizzle takes the front end, keeping an eye at the delicate mechanism which controls the front wheel. Cueball is at the balance point close to the supporting wheel, carrying the largest part of the weight. Megan at the aft end takes care of the ropes.
Ms. Frizzle is impressed how well Cuegan are assisting her.
… the molpy?
Spoiler:
While Cueganzzle were at the tower, it moved from the left bush to the right one, where it's hiding now.

So, there's that. Yay bots!
Yay bots, indeed.
Somewhat ironically, I did all this work to make something that I actually did not use very much for the story. It would have been far easier just to do the rhyming dictionary and skip all the rest. But not nearly so dunejumpish.
It's not like we build bots to do things (actually, we do)... The most fun in botbuilding is... the botbuilding itself. :D

I didn't mean they weren't.

There is less details to pay attention to843.

Camera up = more place for text and less detailed drawing of characters.

Because the drawing of frames on the tree in the "Where do the ONGs come from?" was not very visible (the A5 paper taking too little space of the videoframe, also the camera quality). I recorded drawing the current background and the three first frames on it . But this time it's just 15 minutes of drawing, nothing more.

Most recently, I made a rhyming dictionary. [...] This was originally to support normal, manual poetry-writing, such as the work I did for Mrorl's OTTronic Bard. But once I have a rhyming dictionary, and a metrical scanner, and a travesty generator, and a bunch of other bits of <computery stuff> just lying around and yearning to tickle the Muse, why not put them all together to make a poetry-writing bot? And that, my dear fellow OTTers, is what I have done. mrorls-ottronic-bard creates stanzas of any desired meter and rhyme scheme, and optionally containing text matching a regular expression: [...]

Really cool. Was the sonnet that you posted in last page's goat post a creation of your poetry-writing bot too?

And yay for Aluisio's former prof!

More Caprice-related hints.

Postby mrob27 » Fri May 08, 2015 10:42 pm UTC

balthasar_s wrote:The previous songs were uploaded by Project "Time". This one is by Capricious Studios Official Page.

Oh, treeish. That confirms my Vocaloid theory. We also now know that @Caprice plays Kerbal Space Program, if that's a hint… Blitzrockets are molpier when they're LEML!
Some other names of synthetic voices, apart from "VOCALOID4", are "Kaito", "Len", "Maika", and "Meiko". This video can help discern which is which. In Japanese we have "鏡音リン・レン", which are Kagamine Rin/Len, voiced by Vocaloid 2, and apparently they have Anime characters.
Oh, and I found a Polish word — Ludzkość, which means "human race" or "mankind". That's interesting :)

Also, I wonder what the thing in your pre-madness avatar is.
I remember that after I saw some of your early posts and tried to find out who you are I found a video (yours?) of moving through a world made of cubes. Is it from there?

I never explained that, did I?
I changed my avatar to that avatar in anticipation that as a FF00BF BFF, my avatar might get changed anyway. It is from Eden World Builder, which is a Minecraft-like game for Apple mobile devices (like iPad). Here are some recent photos of my "world" in Eden. It is a 3D world made of cubes, as you say, but also wedge-shaped half-cubes (which is one of the nice things that make Eden better than Minecraft). The building featured in the avatar is one of my creations, in a world that was largely created by other people before me (I believe I am the 4th major builder of this world). I call it the "cuboctahedron building". My world was pretty enough that the game's programmer chose it for use as one of the sample screen shots for Eden in the iTunes App Store. Notably, I also figured out the game's file format. The video you saw might have been this, it's the only Eden video I've made.
