Alas, the long-neglected white pixel, pariah of Time
's pixel society, goes ever-un-noticed. Even the accidentally-very-dark-gray-instead-of-black pixel receives a place of honour, a timelessly-memorable title (mustard
) and endless attention and speculation about what it portends for the world as we know it and the infallibility (or lack of such) of a One True Author. OTTers flock to museums built in its honour
But white pixels? Naahhh, they have no mass, no shade, nothing in our world is made of them and they may as well not even exist. We hear of them only once, in that creation-myth of the primordial Machine built by Mrorl
at the dawn of Time
Most everything, in fact, had become either black (including the ground, the sea, the coffee, babies, molpies and trees) or white (which included the clouds, the sun and the stars, along with the beautiful brashations and neotremes that zipped and circled eagerly through the skies, though they could now no longer be distinguished from the sky itself which was also completely white.)
though even that passage seems somewhat dismissive. The Machine is seen advising the bOTTifactors that there are still a lot of grays left
but that they should reserve them … [for] certain special dark places
. The gray pixels are rare, and should be "reserved" for places that are "special" by being dark. What of the special light places? Nothing is ever said of them.
Oh, what sad times are these …
There is a pestilence upon this Thread, nothing is sacred.
Even those who arrange and design pixels are under
considerable economic stress at this period in history…
But I digress.
Maybe they are in front of the stairs, and this is a way, by occultation, to figure out how thick they are?
What's "they", the white pixels? It may also be a way, by occultation, to figure out how thick our stick-figures' sticks are. (The timing of an occultation depends on the dimensions both of the occulting object and
the occulted object. So we'd need more data in any case.)
… though I'd lean towards @mscha
's dithering artifact explanation
. The white pixels only move when something else nearby is moving/changing, which is consistent with the artifacts seen in two-dimensional error diffusion
. Similar effects probably caused pixel-changes (and lack of such) leading to @Sustainabilizer
that "remapt_0199 to 0203 aren't identical"

I see one of these:
WARNING: P0rtals should be handled only by their edges. Do not extend
any part of your body through the P0rtal during relocation. Unintended
and/or excessive death may occur, and this warning constitutes sole and
complete remedy on behalf of Aperture Systems. Good luck.
the implications are clear. They're going to solve their problem in the style of what if? 53
