In other news, "celebrate" no longer looks like a real word.

I intended the following for a release with a revamped Zanclean Zodiac page (with mobile support and cool CSS). But, since that's difficult and may take a while I'm releasing this during our 100k celebration.

This first section is basically a transcript of the prologue. The second section is behind the scenes style.

_____________________________________

The prologue begins with the meeting of the two groups, the Beanies, led by ᖆᘈᘖ [Amtoo], and Cueball and Megan. Coming in from each side, their empending meeting is obscured by the first baobab tree.

Cueball remarks about the markings on the tree, "There are those strange markings." Megan seeks an answer with the help of distant friends, "I bet ᖆᘈᘖ could help figure it out!" In a whispered tone ᖆᘈᘖ notes that "ᕒᖚᐧ ᔪᘖᐨ [Someone's there.]"

While there was a bit of tension meeting up in the dark, it's a casual encounter upon sight. "ᘈᘊᘖ ᘛᔭᐦ [Hello, xuys!]", the Beanies say in their greeting. Megan excitedly shouts, "ᖆᘈᘖ [Amtoo!]"

The Beanies are ready to spread their mythology. "ᖗᘖᐣᖚᐧ ᔕᐣᘖᖚᐨ ᔕᐣᘖ ᘛ ᕋᐣᒣ ᓄᘈᖉᐨ [Sit down and join us. I'll tell you the story of our land.]" Megan, answering for the both of them, says "OK.", where she really only gets the gist of what they're saying and gesturing.

From here we begin listening to the story of Beanish mythos.

_____________________________________

I concocted a meaning to each word that I created. Unfortunately, I may have lost those tinkerings that I used to create each word. There were thoughts such as "this word has parts meaning 'nuts' and 'tail'" and things like that. If I do happen to remember or find these, I'll edit them in.

As a bonus, besides the explicit reveal of the meaning of each Beanish phrase, I include the mockup sketches that led to the drawings.

The first symbol in the Beanish Zodiac is ᓭᐧᘈᖉᕋ [squirpy], a squirrelH.
Image
It's basically a back-end silhouette, emphasis tail.

The second symbol is that of the rock of Gibraltar. The Beanish word should have been recognizable to those that obssessed over the map frames. I interpreted ᑫᘊᘊ to mean, simply, "big rock", or at least, "special rock".
Image
Obviously it's the strait with the rock damming it.

The third symbol is that of ᒣᐣᖚᕋ [chirpy].
Image
I believe this is where I attempted to include a literal otter. Sticking to things taken directly from Time was a better policy.

The fourth symbol is that of ᑲᓄᕋ [turtlemolp]. Trivia: This was originally going to be a crab. I left a wink to that when I mention the "crab grass". Apparently I also drew some crab grass. But, Time had a turtle, not a crab, so I changed things to be more Timey. (The crab because of the heretical symbol Cancer. Parody or pastiche, this would have to be an homage instead.)
Image Image Image
A simplified shell.

The fifth symbol is that of ᖽᓭᒣᕋ [beesnake]. I did this one as dotted motion lines, similar to how it was in Time. I thought it would have been neat for all of the symbols, but decided against it. I also had a technique for the motion lines to be animated (looping movement) but could not work out all the bugs (pun intended!!!).
Image
The lines are supposed to represent both the motion of the beesnakes and to create an outline of the face of one.
Also, you can see that one of the original designs is two nearly parallel lines. Originally I wanted them to be similar to, to take the place of, the heretical zodiac. This one maybe like Aquarius.

At this point I will point out that I tried to give a good order to these. Each thing leading into the other. Also a bit of pacing, seeing familiar things separated by less familiar ones.

The sixth symbol is that of ᖽᘊᐣᖽᘈᕋ [rabtor]. All I can say for those that found the design odd is: the tail is there, it's the brighter star on the right.
Image
The dots are sometimes arranged to help the intended image stand out.

The seventh symbol is that of ᕒᖚᑫᕋ [raptorkitty].
Image
This one had to compete with similarity with squirpy. A different direction for the tail and a slightly different curve. I did want there to be some similarities between symbols because that's how a lot of groups work, such as the alphabet or the heretical zodiac.

The eighth symbol is that of ᘊᖊᔕ [thwapstick].
Image Image
I remember wanting to include people, the stick figure. Here, instead, I've made it so "thwapstick" also represents people (use of tools? definitely not penises...).

The ninth symbol (in order) is that of ᖊᕋ [slithermolp]. The text reads:
After facing such a large animal, the humans think nothing much of the smaller predators. Though, when they encounter the curious ᖊᕋ with neither a head nor a tail, they decide to sidestep past and continue on.

Image
This was meant to be noticed by some and not by others. It is an apocryphal symbol. It could be considered the thirteenth symbol. I don't recall anyone noticing it. I released it with a randomly completed constellation (everything from no stars, to a full line drawing with stars). The text was embedded in the link URL as an exercise for the OTTer to extract. Even on the companion site was the text available only at random. (Source code FTW, though!)

Eh, I tried. lol.

The ninth symbol (ignore the above...) is that of ᑕᖗᕋ [pricklymolp].
Image

The tenth symbol is that of ᘊᖊᑦᓄᓭᘖ [small maiden], more commonly known as La Petite. Here's where I comment on my stuff with a bit of confusion...: Why is the symbol for "big" in her name if she's small? hah. Oh, that symbol doesn't just mean "big", it can also mean "important" or "special".
Image
Yeah, it's the beret.

The eleventh symbol is that of ᑫᕬ [balance], represented by the trebuchet, of course.
Image

The twelfth symbol is that of ᘊᕒᖊᐣᑲᕬ [entropy], or time. This is where I comment that my original intention of having the symbols be circular was sadly dashed as I went along. Sorry, loopists. Sometimes the story wins over the writer. It was out of my hands. *runs*
Image

ᑫᕬ and ᘊᕒᖊᐣᑲᕬ both make use of symbolically (pun intended) significant brighter stars.

I shall note that the star field moved. It starts at frame 2407 (I think) and happened to end on frame 2440 (the meteor frames). I hadn't planned it, but because of that I set up my server to deliver the ᘊᕒᖊᐣᑲᕬ image as meteor frames only during those same parts of the hour that GLR intended during Time. (Or, whatever the reality turned out to be.)

Also, to clarify, the constellation stars are not fixed in the starfield. They act as a sky drawing (compare to the dirt drawing in the Beanish camp). This is more clear if one uses the viewer on the companion site.

All the molpies "end" with "ᕋ".

The starfield moves just as it did in Time. If you were lucky enough to view this "interactively" you'll actually see more starfield than in Time.

The previous constellation appears slightly dimmed as the current constellation comes into focus.

I was a bit limited to a certain amount of frames because of how I was creating a broader starfield than original. I basically expanded the field based on the previous or subsequent frames of Time, all of which I had to do during the darkest period. (Oh, yeah, sorry it's so dark...)

I don't remember what I already covered in my last behind the scenes, so pardon any redundancy.

_____________________________________

Did you guys like any of the other possible designs? Any thoughts on how I used Beanish?

Edit: Spellcheck; 100k not 10k. Time is not a marathon!

Baobabs, azule! This is awesomeful! Also, for the first time, I've seen the click & drag in action (it never seemed to work for me before, or maybe I was clicking on the wrong images) and it's gorgeous! I'm going to have to blitz the whole thing as soon as I get a little Time.

About the Beanish though... can you explain how you arrived at the molpy names? You seem to know a lot. How many of the symbols do you have meanings for? I feel certain of almost nothing....

Wheel on stick.

Postby balthasar_s » Sat Jul 02, 2016 3:54 pm UTC

It's time for another post.
The wheelstick,
Image
It was used in BFTF but it's older than BFTF.
I believe that this is the first drawing where the wheelstick is a real thing (2009 or 2010), from a comic I made:
Image
In that drawing it's only inserted in the ground but later I reused it.

But the interesting thing is:
Where did I get the idea for a wheelstick with this shape?
The idea comes from this symbol from the game The Neverhood:

Also, I'm going Outside for the next few days.

The Chronicles of Torgos, Vol. 2

Postby Gingercat » Mon Jul 04, 2016 2:36 am UTC

Welcome to The Chronicles of Torgos, Volume 2! (Torgos is the name of my DnD character I posted the previous Goblin-oriented story about. I'm going to retroedit my first DnD post to be titled this as well, for consistency and great justice.)

<- Volume 1

Spoiler:
Torgos has officially joined the rest of the group, having been introduced to them by his fellow Blue Dragonborn friend. He decides to travel with them to a quite misty, foggy town which hosts a Wizard Tower, built within swampy marshland, which has been subject to some very weird goings-on lately. He could do with some employment prospects, and opportunities to gain knowledge and experience are a powerful driving factor in his reason for being.

On arrival, the party is informed that the area is subject to ever-increasing attacks by what would largely be described as "frog-men"; amphibious creatures that are quite big and quite tough to kill. Fittingly, there are normal-size frogs, toads and the like all over the place as well. Added to that are the insubstantial creatures attempting to gain access to the Tower but pushed away by its magical wards: Misty, red-glowing shades that my character (with a Knowledge check) is able to identify from description as likely being Nishruu. That's very bad news for casters like the Wizards in the tower, myself, and any magical weapons / items we're carrying! For those unaware: Nishruu eat magic. As in, you whack one with a magical weapon, sure you deal additional damage the first strike, and congrats on your newly (and permanently) non-magical weapon downgrade! Cast spells at them such as Magic Missile, and you're healing them by doing so, not harming! Whenever they land a hit on a character, items with charges (such as wands) lose one charge, being permanently destroyed if the charges left drop to zero (especially bad if it would normally recharge itself over time), as well as the character losing one of their highest-level remaining spell slots (every hit) until they recharge it by resting, meaning you lose the ability to cast a spell of that level as if you'd cast it, without the benefit of actually having cast it. Nishruu are BAD for magic-users. They are only really susceptible to fire, and in an environment like this one, that's not going to usually be a major hazard for them to face.

The denizens of the Tower ask that our group travel into the swamp, find the source of these attacks, and ask it nicely to cease and desist. Since it's unlikely to be so accommodating, we may need to give it and its minions a stern, metallic talking to. Terms are negotiated, and we set off. On the way, our Ranger decides to stop and have a chat with a couple of frogs to see what information he can get out of them (the rest of the party seems to consider it perfectly normal for him to suddenly stop and talk with frogs; Torgos is slightly amused but understands that the Ranger can talk to small creatures as an innate ability, potentially very useful). The first is (due to a bad roll) entirely uncooperative and tells him the amphibian version of "get stuffed, you're not the Master". The second gives more info and even acts as a guide through the swamp, sitting on the Ranger's shoulder like a slimy wet parrot.

This marshy, boggy, swampy yuckland has plenty of water, as you can imagine. In-character discussions abound on the possibility of diseases from mosquitoes, ticks, leaches, and whatever hoppy, crawly, bitey things we come across, with malaria being a particular concern. Our friendly Blue Dragonborn companion notes that he and I should be relatively immune to leaches, being covered in scales as we are, until it's pointed out by the others that we're still susceptible at joint areas, around our eyes (ergh...), certain other "sensitive" body areas (ERGH!) etc etc. Fair point, we're not immune to leaches, although the mosquitoes etc would have a very hard time getting us.

We come to a river crossing, and have to swim across. Everyone throws their rolls to see how well they handle the swim... And I roll a 1. Bloop, straight under the water I go! Do you know how hard it is to swim in robes and while carrying a quarterstaff?? Given the wet nature of this area, this doesn't bode well for Torgos. He's clearly not a water person. Thankfully one of the others is able to throw me a rope and drag me out before I get into too much trouble. While I'm thoroughly soaked, I'm otherwise unharmed, and thankful for the quick-thinking assist. I'd really rather not drown in a swamp, thanks for asking.

With the aid of the frog (it gestures in the direction we need to go when asked), we continue through the yucklands until we reach what would best be described as a small lake, with our path continuing on the other side. Torgos is determined to not let the dammed water get the best of him, and rolls a Natural 20 on his swim check this time, as does another party member. Ha, take that water! One of us does rather badly on his roll and falls in gracelessly (but not a 1!), making very little forward progress but otherwise suffering no ill effects. The others get in just fine and start making their way toward the other side.

You know how we determined that Dragonborn aren't immune to leaches...?

It turns out that my Natural 20 put me in the perfect position to be attacked by one. And by "attacked", I mean this one is big enough to swallow my foot and part of my leg, digging its teeth in to have a nice Dragonborn Blood Cocktail. Roll initiative, everyone!

So, Leachzor the Legginator rolls higher than me on Initiative, as do most of the party, and since it has the element of surprise, it gets a free attack before the Initiative rolls take effect. It successfully grapples me (it's now latched onto my leg, having swallowed my foot) and pulls me under the water. For its surprise attack round, I get dealt 7 piercing damage out of my 24 max HP, putting me at 17. Ow. Initiative-wise, I'm fairly far down the queue, and most of the others aren't within range to attack yet. Ranged attacks such as with a bow are impossible due to being unable to see it unless within 5 feet due to the disgustingly discolored water, so they have to spend their turns moving closer (or getting out of the water in case there are more of these things, if they're already close to the shore).

Its next attack drops me further with an impressive 9 damage, to 8 remaining HP, and I still haven't had a chance to retaliate yet. Remember my fellow Dragonborn companion? He's standing on the ground at the lake's edge, and has a great idea: His lightning-element breath weapon! Since the leach is in the water, and I'm resistant to electricity naturally, I'll only take half damage from his attack. If I roll my Reflex save, I'll take half of that instead (so only one quarter of the damage roll) while the leach takes full! The others aren't even properly in range to get hurt by the electrified-water effect. Sounds like a great plan! What's the worst that could happen? He aims his breath weapon at the spot he saw me get dragged under, and BAZZZZZZAPPPP!!

Guess who fails their Reflex save with an 8 total (and that's with a +2 Dex modifier! I like to think that it's because I'M SUBMERGED IN WATER and couldn't see it coming), and guess who else rolled some REALLY high numbers on his damage rolls (because y'know, lightning + water)?

Let's take a break to give you some context before I continue: A total of three successful "Save Vs. Death" rolls (10 or higher is a success, so you've got a 55% chance each time) normally means that you "stabilize" and remain at zero HP, unable to take any actions or engage in combat, but no longer at risk of dying. Three "failed" Death Saves means the character is not just unconscious, but dead, and can only be revived by an expensive Raise Dead / Resurrect spell, not really available to anyone at this point. Your fate is determined when you have recorded three-of-a-kind either way on your character sheet, with the Failed taking priority over the Successful, and being brought above zero HP automatically erasing all recorded Saves and resetting your status. If I die, I'm out of the campaign, so long and thanks for all of the Goblins. Quite disappointing given this is only my second session and how well the first one went, but hey, bad rolls happen right? I came into this game knowing full well that there's no save-scumming when things go wrong. While sad, I'm entirely willing to Man Up and accept that Torgos just wasn't meant to be, if it comes to that, and I'd roll up a new character for the next session and hope for better luck.

So now, having not even taken a turn to try and break free from the grapple yet, I'm now at zero HP (unconscious), still grappled (that leach is far from dead, it has some serious HP), and underwater (these are all separately important factors). When my turn rolls around, the only thing I'm able to do is roll a Save Vs. Death. The fact that I'm underwater means that a Success would normally mean I just add one Success to my sheet toward the hopeful total of three. However, in these circumstances I can't breathe even on a Success, so I also gain an automatic Failed regardless of the dice roll. So: A Success means that I gain both one Success and one Failed status on my character, a failed roll means two(!) Failed statuses being recorded (one fail plus one auto-fail), and rolling a Natural 1 itself gives two immediate Failed, and with the auto-Failed from being underwater, a Natural 1 would mean 2x Failed from rolling the Natural 1 + 1x Failed from being unable to breathe = 3x Failed in one go = instant death, that's that. The other Dragonborn is utterly horrified that his experiment went so badly, and can't stop apologising OOC. I make it clear that I'm OOC amused and impressed, and that hey, bad rolls happen; nice work with the damage roll by the way, that was genuinely impressive numbers, it did some considerable damage to the leach, and it was actually a damned clever idea in my opinion. I absolutely would have done the same. If Torgos dies, that's part and parcel of D&D, I knew Torgos could die at any time when I created him, so we're all good.

I finally get to my turn throw my first Save Vs. Death: A 12! (Whew...) I mark one Success and one Failed on my character sheet.

The others attempt to get to the leach to trash it; some hit for minor damage, others miss, others are out of range of it or don't have effective weapons to aim at it with (can't see it in the water unless you're within 5 feet due to the sheer brackish erk of the water, so no aiming with a bow).

Leachzor gets its attack turn, and drains hard on Torgos's leg. Now the damage I'm taking is not to HP (since I'm at zero), but to base stats: The drained blood is a -3 to Constitution. Ouch. So I go from 16 Constitution to 16 max (13 effective). (Damage to stats in this manner are recovered at the rate of +1 per day until back to normal, so it's not "permanent"). This takes my effective Constitution Saves modifier from +3 down to +1 for now; back to +2 at 14 and 15, and +3 at 16 if I get the time to recover.

My turn comes around, I throw another Save, very conscious that at any moment now a failed roll = death: I already have one Failed, and a bad roll here would add two more (the failed roll plus the auto-fail from still being underwater would equal 3 total Fails, thus death). And it's a 17, yay! Another Success and Failed on my sheet. If I don't get above water by my next turn, I'm dead no matter what happens since I'll be at 3 Failed total and I'll effectively have drowned. Even if I did manage to get above water, I'd still have to throw the third Success or die anyway since I've got two recorded Fails. Dire times!

It's at this point that Leachzor thinks it's doing pretty well for itself, having taken a big drink, and decides to use its turn to take its food elsewhere instead of taking another drink, since this food is not struggling at all (it doesn't have a very high Intelligence score, as you can imagine, so the fact that it's been taking heavy damage from attacks doesn't factor into its decisions). It ends up swimming lazily around and directly into the path of a speeding trucksword, turning it into a leachkebab. Did anyone get the license plate on that? Being sort of, y'know, dead, it lets go of me and I float limply in the water, about a few seconds away from an auto-fail on my Death Save and thus drowning.

I thankfully get dragged out of the water, and before I have to make my final Save Vs. Death throw, our group's Paladin uses a Lay On Hands spell, which normally heals for 25. I immediately go to full HP (24) and can erase those horrible Death Saves! The relief I felt is hard to describe. The damage to my Constitution will remain and gradually be restored over the next few days, since the group doesn't have any spell or effect that can remove it immediately, but who cares? I'M ALIVE!!

And that's only the first half of the session. The next half will be covered in Volume 3!

Anyways, as for the resize you really wanted... I'm more limited by the size of the photo I used as a base. I had originally found it at 1000 pixels across, and I've already stretched it by 1.1. Now I see that I could have used a 1920xsomething image, but that still only gets me double the size.... Google image search claimed a 6K version when I just looked, but when I clicked on it, it was actually tiny. So, no - I'm probably stuck there. How big is a desktop background image anyways? You find me a 3K or larger version of that photo, and I could probably whip something up for you.

Also, to clarify, the constellation stars are not fixed in the starfield. They act as a sky drawing (compare to the dirt drawing in the Beanish camp).

I was definitely noticing that they were not fixed, even though I didn't know about the click-and-drag. I noticed when I made my ZZ frame list post, which I did as soon as I found a broswer where control-right-arrow worked. I didn't understand why they moved, except that it was evident you wanted to present a new "sign of the zodiac" every other frame.

I also really like the broadened starfields and appreciate how much work must have gone into that!

Oh, yeah, sorry it's so dark…

It made me set my monitor gamma to 1.0 :o Then the images look as they should, everything can be seen easily, and no harm done. After all, what's the monitor gamma setting for, except to compensate for things like this? (I also often use the "invert everything" hotkey, which was great for t1i bluecave images — no ENHANCEment needed, all the blue stuff shows up yellow.)

Wonderful album art, @ggh!

Hey, wheelstick! And more to read and Image which I'll have to do later.

P.S. @azule, I really think you deserve some kind of OTT medal for creating such beautiful work and then enduring such a long period with it being largely unappreciated. I hope we can make up for it now.
