I tried a few of these. Here's an oilslick-like one, an emboss, the emboss with small differences boosted, and an emboss enhanced with a hue-mapping. (They're spoilered for seaishness.)

If any of them are helpful, I could probably do a set of all the Rosetta frames in whatever enhancement is desired. I could try other enhancements too. For myself, I'm not really loving any of these.

I am, however, loving All's fair in ch*rp and m*stard.

Heh, I'm glad that's as bad as it got. :)
My brain had gotten seriously leaky by the time I posted last night - and by last night I mean 7:15 am. Replying was taking all the will I could muster and when I was trying to proofread, I just couldn't read. I do recall looking at my post and realizing that I had substituted the word "barnyard" for some other word in my post. I was way beyond typos. Barnyard. No idea....

Yes, I think it's you, Neil, ergman and Flado. Sigh. Sorry. And I'm sad to say this doesn't even make my top ten list of current correspondence fails via procrastination. :( Thanks for being so understanding!

Ha! Yes!
That splodge was really bugging me before I realized that there was the sideways OCEAN. The hair is still a mystery to me. Maybe it really is the GLR giving a wink to that hair. :)

Is "please" a metaphor? I think that would be stretching it. Also, in lojban, please is pe'u, whilst the figurative marker is pe'a, but frankly, even I'm willing to chalk that up to coincidence. I do think that symbol in that newpix is supposed to be some kind of hint though. Ideas?
First, thanks for the pigeon beanies. That was delightful to see.

Maybe I am blind, but what diacritics are on the word "please". Which letter is it on, and which diacritic is it? Is it the dot? All I see are splotches.
Do I see what I think I see? Who knows. But for me, I see all these marks as potential diacritics:

But it's not that unusual a shape. It appears other places too. It could be just a mark. I'm starting to feel like "confirmation bias" is my middle name. ggcbh.

Edit: Oh, and there's also a larger one superimposed over that first one over the letter P.

ED, you keep surprising me with twists! And nice collarbones. :)

Yay for Skids and Charity! There is much contradiction, but is it holy? We'll just have to.... er.... where is TheMinim?

Purdy! However it will require a bit more lucubration before enlightenment dawns.

I was going to say something about bosoms, but they are like electrons. They come in pairs when their bound. But then I forgot, and now realize that the lexicography wasn't right for the joke anyway.

heehee, when I went back and read it, I wondered if people thought I was PUI. :D I wasn't even sure it had posted. The connection was really slow, and it was almost ready to post when they told us to turn off our phones. Since I had lectured the high school students that we took on the importance of turning off cell phones once the show started, I figured I better turn my phone off. Guess it posted at the last seconds, typos and all. For reference, what I meant to type was that I went to see "Wingishness and the Molpy." It was awesomeful.

Speaking of awesomeful, both ED's story (and the end of chemo!) and the Zanclean Zodiac "making of" were awesomeful. OTOH, this from ucim was awfulsome:

What kind of beautiful places?
Desert? High Mountain Desert?

That can be done in one day.

Deciduous or Evergreen?

Oh! Oh!

Have you found beautiful places made by The Hand of Man?

Stumbling Even More Off Topic:

I wonder:

When confronted with Natural Wonders, (after the initial shock)

They Must! Geology was born with the question "How?" (right?)
Ohhh....Geology might have been born with the words, "Where can we find More of this?"

When confronted with ManMade Wonders, (after the initial shock)
Do other people ask "Why?"

As I write this post,
it becomes clear to me,
I know the answer.

Some people ask, "How?" of Man
and, "Why?" of God/Nature.

Some people ask "How?" of God/Nature,
and, "Why?" of the Hand of Man.

I'm really enjoying the suspense of the slow reveal. I confess I was momentarily disappointed when
Spoiler:
Skids said she was a mage. I had been thinking of her as a clever, or maybe just educated, individual trying to get by in an area (or a time) where the locals didn't science very well. Then when she started talking about what her people did and didn't do, it made her less that person, and more just a representative of her group: I do this because my people do this. But don't take me saying that I was momentarily disappointed as a criticism - it's more just me having to give up a set of attractive assumptions and find a new footing. Will this be more a story of two cultures meeting? Will Charity be introducing Skids to the joys of fish cooked over a campfire?
I'll have to

I do have one small nit to pick:
Spoiler:
I don't see how tight pants are any harder to put on in the dark. (And I'm also having trouble seeing tight pants as being very useful to a girl of action.) Tight pants are just fan service, no? Not that I have anything against fan service per se. I guess I'm just not into tight pants.

Hmm, I'll reconsider the bit about the pants. It wasn't well thought out, especially since Charity can't see as much as it describes, so it's a POV failure.

I was just reading about punctuation on the language log. Maybe there's no period, for instance, because this Beanie was keeping it casual. Like "let's hit the hay" instead of "we shall now commence our 8 newpix of sleep."

That's all I got. Speaking of sleep....

Not exactly like that. I am "being a bicycle guy" since 2007 and this happened earlier. Probably when I was 10 and my sister was 5 we were playing the game together. There were these 12 symbols, which we had to put in the correct order to open a door. We had to write them down, while doing this we were talking to each other and somehow we created names for the symbols:
Spoiler:
Image
1 - robot (a robot, looks kind of like a robot head)
2 - siłacz (a strong guy, looks like an arm with a fis (the square) and a muscle (the triangle))
3 - kasza (kasha, looks like a sideways bowl with something)
4 - drzewo (a tree)
5 - piła (a saw)
6 - laska (a staff)
7 - antena (an antenna)
8 - sprężyna (a spring)
9 - rower (a bicycle)
10 - wybuch (an exploision)
11 - gwóźdź (a nail)
12 - osioł (a donkey)
Yes, we actually saw it as a bike then.
Years later I was drawing a comic. There was a guy (he would be a different-univeerse equivalent of fth), he had a towing truck with a parabolic antenna on the roof. He goes fishing. He tries to use his truck's hook for this. A fish jumps out and steals his antenna, takes it underwater, sticks it in the ground and adds it to its collection of things. When drawing this I remembered the symbol and drew it as a thing inserted into the ground, I made the vertical part a bit longer.
I liked it. I thought it's a cool thing. I reused it in other comics and drawings. But only in BFTF it had an actual use (other than a stick to hit things with).

@balthasar_s
Suppose you have a +2 bonus to the ability you are rolling the die for. If you roll an 18, that makes a total of 20. But that is only a 20 because of the +2 modifier, and thus is not a natural 20. It's only a natural 20 if the number you rolled on the die is a 20.

addams wrote:What is Blind Posting?
It's posting when you aren't "in the present". If you're ketchupping (or blitzing) you will not have read the most recent posts, but your post will still be added to the end of the queue. You are "blind" to the posts that happened between where you "are" and the present. Back in the heyday, it was pretty much impossible not to blind post, since in the time it took to type up a post, several pages would have been added to the thread. Nowadays, blindposts are mostly made by blitzers and those who are in need of condiment.

Blind posts are welcome like any other posts.
As the coinager of that coinage, I'll pipe in. That is a sufficient description. My particular take on it is that it's not a blindpost if you've been ninja'd. It's only blind based on knowing that you're intentionally skipping reading the most present Present Posts. I suppose, if you'd like to include ninja'ing, we could call it Blinded Posting (note the '-ed') since it would be foisted upon you, the blindness.

@balthasar_s
Exactly this. On the 20-sided die, only the actual "20" (ie, an average 5% chance) is considered a "Natural" 20, and thus it has inherent properties that lower numbers reaching 20 due to bonuses don't have:

* On a roll to hit an enemy, a Natural 20 allows the attacker to roll two sets of damage dice instead of one (ie, instead of "roll one 8-sided die for damage" it becomes "roll two 8-sided dice and add them together for total damage").
* On a Save Vs Death, you get two Success markings in one go instead of one, immediately putting you a step closer to stabilizing.
* When attempting a skill check such as acrobatics, bluffing or diplomacy, a Natural 20 is immediately considered to be as successful as the circumstances can possibly allow, likely resulting in additional gains beyond what would normally occur on a "normal" Success.
* Extreme example: On an enemy that is normally far too evasive to be hit, a Natural 20 is always considered a hit anyway, even if you'd normally have to roll "a 45" [total] to hit it. A 19 in this case would only be a hit if you had a further +26 in bonuses (impossible in most circumstances). [There's also the possibility that even though you hit, your weapon is ineffective against this type of enemy anyway. Cue the calls of "What a waste of a 20!".]

On the other end of the spectrum, regardless of bonuses, a "Natural 1" is almost always considered to be a Critical Failure, usually subjecting its unfortunate owner to penalties and punishments such as being forced to skip their next attack opportunity, losing a substantial advantage, having a critical piece of equipment damaged or destroyed, or even dying horribly.

In theory :) In practise it would be possible to work out a way to throw the dice in just such a way as to guarantee specific numbers, just as it's possible to (consciously or not) have a particular bias toward throwing the dice in a certain way that will predispose you to certain outcomes more than others.

It wasn't a perfect metaphor. While I was suggesting that many of the things you make start off in a more conventional style and then progressively accelerate in a direction orthogonal to convention, that's often not the case: lots of your projects start out with 17-sided bricks.

Does anyone remember USB? Unglish, Squarish, & Beanish? How about Speechese (or Speechease) instead of Squarish? Because, Rosetta is the translator therefore she speaks with ease. (I know, it turned out not to be that easy, but still, better name, no?)

Works for me. :)

I was thinking about that USB symbol... how it could be a little wink if the language was more of a constructed one designed to be like a computer one (like lojban).

But then I got distracted by Ndyuka. I wandered there because of what Jose said, but then it tied in to something you pointed out, azule, and furthermore revealed an odd symbol that I was looking for, and now I'm likely to obsess over it for a couple days before I throw it in the Interesting Mistaken Discovery pile.

Remind me again why Beanish is thought not to be a syllabary?
Edit: Nevermind - I just refreshed my memory on that one. Looks like tresoldi wasn't ruling it out, though Vokietis thought there were too few symbols. I'm not sure, with such a small sampling, that we really have much of an idea how many symbols there are.

I thought that Squarish was a separate language from Beanish and Unglish, as in Rosetta is from another part of the territory that the Beanies oversee, maybe where Squarish is her native tongue. She may have learned Beanish and a dialect of Unglish (Hill People dialect?) for the Gibraltar berm project.

Yes, that's the separate language I'm referring to. Just thought a different name for it would be neat. Cueball yells "Speech!" when he figures out that Rosetta can translate for them, where the 3 shapes are also being shown.

No, the key to the whole thing is to know your hot buttons when prestidigitating on a lucky; if you can't control yourself you'll have to pause or break before going back to shift into an alternate space so you can function properly.
