Sesame Street Unsuitable For Children

Postby Mighty Jalapeno » Mon Nov 19, 2007 5:34 am UTC

In particular:

"The earliest episodes of Sesame Street are being made available on DVD, but the NYT notes Volumes 1 and 2 carry a rather strange warning: 'These early 'Sesame Street' episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today's preschool child.' So why are they unsuitable for toddlers in 2007? Well, in the parody 'Monsterpiece Theater,' Alistair Cookie — played by Cookie Monster — used to appear with a pipe, which he later gobbled. 'That modeled the wrong behavior,' explained a Sesame Street executive producer, adding that 'we might not be able to create a character like Oscar [the Grouch] now.'"

I... this... they... what... Elmo...

Oh god. Come back, Jim Henson. Come back and save us. Or take us with you.

Next they'll say Avenue Q isn't suitable for children!

Did anyone here actually watch this show and then go out and mimic it? Eating pipes or tobacco? Is anyone here messed up from watching this stuff as a kid?

We watched tons of Jim Henson stuff as a kid. I loved it! In fact we're finding all the good stuff online from when I was a kid and showing it to ours. They seem to love it too.

Come back Jim, we miss you.

At least Brian Henson is trying to do some more "Henson-esque" things recently.
(Brian Henson BTW is such a groovy man, sorry if this one gets ya jealous too Nyarlathotep but I've also met him)

He makes a very good kids show called "Bear in the big blue house" that our girls love. First time I watched it, I thought it had a familiar feel to it... then I saw his name in the credits and went "AH Ha!" I bought a couple DVDs so I can put on a good show now and then that I know my girls will like.

Or you could just show them Sesame Street.

Elmo = Spawn of Satan.

Sesame Street and other Hensonesque shows just don't really have the charm they did when Jim Henson was alive. Even the Muppets themselves have lost their appeal ever since Disney bought the rights.

I never saw Bear In The Big Blue House. I'd seen clips, and it looked like a decent show. Seemed to have the appeal early episodes of SS or other shows had.

I think the only movie that the Henson production team, who specialize in puppetry and animatronics I have seen that really had the Henson feel to it was "Babe".

Once you read this story, you'll never look at the Muppets the same way again.

See, when I was a kid, it was all about Grover. Now Elmo's face is plastered everywhere. Stop being an attention whore, Elmo.

Reminds me of parents complaining about cartoon characters with speech impediments and how it would harm their children's speech development. It boggled me that this was coming from people who grew up watching Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig.

I can see that kind of message showing up if the show had racist themes or some such, but something tells me that Sessame Street is pretty clean.

Avenue Q sucks. Nobody should be watching it, it corrupts all minds with its all-encompassing suckiness.

Captain Vegetable... is tone deaf.

If he's still on the show when I have kids and he hasn't learned to be more exact with his pitches... I won't let my kids watch him : X

(I know, I'm neurotic. It's just that I learned a lot about singing from imitating music I heard on kids shows and such. I don't want my kids to imitate... IT.)

I didn't think you were serious until that last part... and now I'm not sure...
