Watch it.

I saw that last year actually. I had seen it as a tadpole, though, so I recognized almost everything. But apparently I did not pay attention to whatever thing in it relates to this. :(

I'm not hating, it just seems like... I dunno, watching Alien and not knowing where that thing on that guy's face came from.

This is getting really confusing.

SecondTalon is referring to Space Balls, not Alien.

The thing on the guy's face comes from Alien. If you watched Alien and you wondered where the thing on a guy's face comes from... then... you watched the movie it comes from. If you're watching Space Balls and you see the Hello Ma Baby scene, that's a parody of Alien.

As for the shave-and-a-haircut thing, it's older than Roger Rabbit. If you wanna know what it comes from, just search the web. But I learned what it was when I was a kid and my parents explained that scene from Roger Rabbit to me, because I didn't quite get the joke (I was probably six or so? I had heard the jingle, just never heard words that go with it).

Or, if you prefer, I can describe the entire sequence so that it will not only be no longer confusing, it'll be no longer funny.

So, I just want this to be on the record, I actually did get this reference even before New User explained it, because I unhealthily watched Space Balls like twenty times as a kid. Also, just so we're really clear here, I know what a goatee is and I know that the thing on the guy's face in Alien means he's the evil alternate-dimension version of Captain Picard. I was not born yesterday.

That is... deeply unsettling.
The scholars tell us that God drives a Plymouth Fury, for it is written in Jeremiah 32:37: "He drove them out of the land in His Fury". But the Twelve Apostles shared a Honda Accord, for it is written in Acts 5:12: "They were all with one Accord".

I went to the rodeo for the first time in like 8 years.

My little cousins are in town, and we decided to do something "Texan" for them.

It's so much fun -- they've got a carnival and the rodeo. It's all almost exactly like I remember it! Except for the fact that they now announce the events using the big screen, as opposed to flags on horses.

What's weird is they don't call the rodeo clowns rodeo clowns anymore -- they're now the "bullfighters".

Also, the freak show is missing from the carnival.

Either way, it's still worth the $20 for a ticket -- between the childhood nostalgia and the actual event.

In other waiting-related news, today I trudged all the way across the city for a CF card only to then give up on it out of frustration and spite. Never seen an electronics store have its customers take a number for any sort of purchase, but it would've been fine, if things moved faster than the average tectonic plate. The slip of paper I got informed me there was one more person "in line", who got to the counter TWENTY minutes after I entered the store. I still don't know if they would've served me before the next ice age, because I left at this point. The registrar's office has nothing on these guys...

Could it be tied to the Mythical Masculine Musclebound Mastodon Mmmmmm.....micropachycephalo..... Mystique?

Not the X-Men character. The idealised hypothetical Real Man with vast amounts of self-confidence who can drink 10 pints of beer without stopping to pee, never lets speed limits or other people's safety slow him down, does bicep curls with half his own weight and bench-presses 150% his own weight, chants "Bros before hos" some times, needs extra tuition in every academic subjects, has never done a crossword in his life and is always surrounded by women with athletic figures, over-sized breasts and bleached hair who love him for how awesome he is. That guy. Sort of a cross between Conan the Barbarian, Drake, Donk and Alvin Marsh without Conan's love of long words or any of Donk's redeeming features, like decency.

Could the cheerleaders be a part of his image, added to the field to persuade the crowd that the players on their team are that guy?

Glorifies other sports players too, though. Expects baseball, hockey, and/or soccer to qualify. Why are cheerleaders absent in those? (Apparently added cheerleaders (or something similar) to certain hockey teams, admittedly.) Brings cheerleaders to male and female basketball games too.

I expect it has to do with how prominent the sport is in college sports, and especially how prominent it was when colleges were introducing cheerleading. Except for hockey. I think the cheerleaders would just get cold if they had to cheer on ice.

Makes sense. Rechecked cheerleading's Wikipedia entry. Started with (American) football. Increased in popularity during the 1950's. Found another source. Called college football and basketball "traditional revenue sports" in the late 1960's. Retained their popularities, evidently.

Stands corrected on cheerleading in baseball, also. Began in 2003. Appears prevalent enough to warrant "The 13 Best MLB Cheerleading Squads of 2013". Must be low-key.

Interesting sidenote:
Wikipedia wrote:In 1923, at the University of Minnesota, women were permitted to participate in cheerleading. However, it took time for other schools to follow. In the late 1920s, many school manuals and newspapers that were published still referred to cheerleaders as "chap," "fellow," and "man".

Edit: New fleeting thought: Imagines croquet instead of cheerleading. Entertains people too, correct? Provides something during lulls. Match field goal kickers against their counterparts or mascots.

Plays during breaks or sporadically during the actual game. Depends on available area, probably.

Assumed players from either team, also, not professional croquet players. (Could hire some, though.) Typically brings more players than necessary. Why not let them do something? Demands low physical effort. Stays fresh for the real game. Maintains a good playing field (in sports with fields).
