I don't remember but if it was today, I'd pick Charmander, so that.

Charmander is the only way to go. He is the only one that turns into a DRAGON. (The other "dragon" type Pokemon don't cut it.)

My brother always picked Squirtle. Of course, it was for Blastoise (Speeling?).

Charmander by far!
So what if he has it tough with the first two gym leaders, he does in fact look the dragoniest pokemon.

(As a side note my brother picked Squirtle, Blastoise does look dangerous buuuut water just doesn't sound as destructive as fire!)

Was it your little brother by any chance?

My brother always seemed to pick the combinations that would beat me in any game. (We never actually owned the gameboy, but I borrowed it from a friend.)

Bulbasaur, because it was the first of the three that Ash befriended in the show.

Yeh my little brother :p
He just prefered water types, or thats what he told me.

Me? I was fire psychic or type man myself.

(Seriously I think I disliked electricity and water due to the attacks looking weaker in my mind.)

The first time I played I took Charmander, but then I realised I wasn't playing my Blue cart 'correctly' by not taking the cart's protagonist Pokemon and by not calling myself Ash as a character, so my first full run was with Squirtle -> Blastoise. I did steal a Charmander from my sister's Pkmn Red version, as I didn't fancy a Growlithe/Ponyta much.

I loooooved Bulbasaur. I had him up at Venusaur, with Mewtwo, both over level 80, and I could rip through the entire game, no issue. It was great.

And Squirtle is hotsauce. Watersports, people. Watersports with a turtle. That's just wrong.

whichever one was better at beating rock-type pokemon, since that was your first gym battle.

i think my party was charizard, mewtwo, articuno, dragonite, raichu, and venusaur. if it wasnt venusaur it was a different plant pokemon.

Bulbasaur and Squirtle are both fairly decent. Charmander would lose right out, but there are plenty of grass-type pokemon to catch on the way to Pewter.

Butterfree isn't a grass type, but it's more than enough to rearrange Brock's smug face.

Also, I picked Squirtle. Grass starters are universally lame, and fire is overrated.

Metapod evolves into Butterfree at level 10. It is very sad that I know this.
I usually had Butterfree before I battled Brock

Squirtle all the way!

I've always picked water types for my first play through though. Did the same with silver and crystal too.
Of course, the water one in silver and crystal was significantly more awesome than the other three anyway.

I picked Charmander, and I beat the entire game using only my Charizard. The rest of my team was just a bunch of HM slaves.

That's what I did with Typhlosion in Gold, except I never beat the final trainer (I think he was Red). It really isn't a very good strategy.

Me either, until I borrowed a friend's level 100 Lapras and Zapdos from Red version.

Squirtle, since he was on the cover (played Blue version). As mentioned earlier, if you don't go by the box, you're not doing it right.

The pokemanz designs in Red/Blue were infinitely better than anything in all the games that followed, srsly.

Squirtle.

Edit: And yeah I beat the whole game with just my Blastoise - I just Hydro Pumped everything then ethered then did it again. Which is kinda funny because now I realise that Hydro Pump is such a shitty attack, and a Blastoise with arbitrary EV training is actually really shit.

I am fairly certain that I picked Squirtle... his name was Blastaway for some reason... I got him up to some insanely high level while the rest of my team sucked...

But later I started again and played with Bulbasaur. I just never wrapped my head around Charmander (though he is pretty dang cute).
A good pun is its own reword.

My main guy was surprisingly not my Blastoise. It was a Dodrio which drill pecked everything. Amazing.

Also, I caught them all. Yeah, all of them. That was in blue, before they added so bloody many.

Code: Select all

_=0,w=-1,(*t)(int,int);a()??<char*p="[gd\

I just now found out that if you don't evolve your pokemon, they learn attacks earlier. Like, a bulbasaur learns solar beam 17 levels earlier than a venusaur. I wish I had known that.
As far as I can tell, there is no drawback to postponing evolution until level 65+. Somebody please show me otherwise.

I think (and I'm no expert) that the trade off is in stat gain or somesuch. As in Venusaur gains more attack per level than a Bulbasaur, kind of thing.

Worse than learning moves later were the ones that didn't learn any new movies after you leveled them, which were the ones you needed an elemental stone for - Ninetails or Raichu for instance. Again, I may be wrong.

I usually picked Bulbasaur. Grass beats rock and water, the first two gyms. I did find that my main pokemon in each game has been an earlier quick evolving bug. Loved Beedrill in blue. Can't remember the relevants one is the others (and I really should actually finish Diamond one of these days.)

Other then your pokemon being piss weak for those 17 levels.

The only time I ever stop an evolution is when the pokemon CAN'T learn a specific move at higher evolutions (like only Chimchar out of Chimchar-Monferno-Infernape can learn Nasty Plot, and it learns it after it's evolution level).

I always chose the water-types any time I played the game, so there's a vote for Squirtle. Plus, Blastoise was Bowser with two cannons on his back. I'll take it!

Out of the more classical elements ice has always been my favourite (like I always like an ice element on my sword over most others, unless I have the option of dark or something) but all the ice pokemon are stupid as hell :-(.

The attacks totally kick ass though, Ice Beam is easily the best competitive attack in the game.

Bulbasaur for Sleep Powder.

Now someone else vote for him so we can have a 3-way tie (as of my vote, it's 16/17/17).

Done. Bulbasaur was my first. Was heartbroken when my game glitched and erased my level 100 Venusar. :(

i then realized that out of the three, squirtle is probably the best choice (hydro pump destroyed charizard, and blizzard destroyed venusaur (ice vs poison... i don't remember))

In the game, Charmander cannot learn the "Flash" command. WTF?!

I picked Charmander, because I had red. I then proceeded to only use him throughout the entire game, finishing with a level 84 Charizard ("Charry"). My next highest was at level 52 or something (One of the birds, I presume) (Until I caught Mewtwo, or course). Also, I would give him absolutely every TM I found, for some reason. That probably wasn't wise, but I didn't care! I loved my Charry! (in fact, at some point he was leveled so much that he wouldn't obey me.) At some point, a cockroach climbed into my Gameboy and when I put the cartridge in, the game was erased. I was so sad. I then made another file and played through the game again, doing the same thing (though not to such an extreme extent).

In Gold and Silver, I also chose a fire pokemon starter, and made an effort to always have him be the strongest of the party, despite having an awesome Lugia.

At some point, I used another Gameboy to transfer the other starting pokemon to me, so I would have a party with Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle.

After the second generation, I grew too old for pokemon (har har), and stopped playing. Looking back, I notice several things. First of all, the first generation was by far the best (though I did enjoy some parts of Gold and Silver very much), and after the 2nd generation, things just got ridiculous. I also had a lot of trouble with the whole pokemon liking me thing. Getting the other Eevee evolutions (Epsilon (Edit: Espion. How do you cross out text?) and Umbreon?) was hard (but they were soo cool). I also never bred pokemon, or tried starting with other starting pokemon. Now, I find Bulbasaur the most appealing, followed by Squirtle. Maybe that's just because I've done the whole Charmander thing.

This is making me want to play again. I doubt I have the patience, though.
