God I hate people....

Postby goblin_subway » Mon Apr 21, 2008 3:02 am UTC

I don't mean my friends, but when I am out and about in the world.... I have a general hatred for the populace. They walk too slow, they are too loud, they fail to control their children...... I really hate people.

i can't *hate* them... that is a lot of energy wasted on negativity... but i do get annoyed pretty easily, especially when it comes to unrestrained children. my solution is to stay in my room as much as possible.

I find the average man to be... well, to be blunt, dumb. You'll note the a majority elected George Bush the first time, and a large enough minority voted for him the second time to let him squeak through.

The average man is deeply in debt, is a terrible driver, barely passed high school, has no idea what's going on in the world, and generally fails to have any real significance other than a mild irritant.

And half of them are dumber again than that.

In short, I like specific people. I want to throttle Joe Sixpack, however.

Hate is a strong word. I don't "hate" people, but that doesn't mean I have to like them either.

Goblin, I agree. The average person is an idiot. It really makes me worry about the future. I won't say I hate them, but I'm certainly not fond of them.

Can anyone who's been both inside and outside North America tell me whether other countries have about the same level of stupidity? Are there more/less idiots and are people more/less intelligent on average?

Mind you, you do have to consider that everyone does something stupid once in a while, so don't be too quick to judge.

What really makes me wonder is education. Maybe the school systems here (both Alberta and Ontario) just really suck, but so many people don't know so many things that are taught in high/grade school. Algebra is grade 10 here, but show a random person a simple trinomial and they'll be completely clueless. I doubt many would even know what a trinomial is. Don't even get me started on spelling and grammar. I see so many misused apostrophes it makes me want to cry. How are people graduating and getting jobs without knowing these things?

It also bugs me how inefficient most people are. I don't hate them for it or consider it dumb (although wasting electricity, failing to recycle, etc pisses me off; stop killing the planet plz), but I can't help but wonder how people are so content with it. I guess they just don't realize they could be doing things more efficiently, or don't know how/care enough to optimize what they're doing.

Just thought I should point out, that 80% of college students surveyed believed they were of above average intelligence.

What, so being deeply in debt means that you are stupid, eh? There are so many things wrong with that statement that I don't know where to begin.
Smart people can have crap-paying jobs. The breadwinner can die/move away. Your parents can be poor etc. etc.

I... don't hate the people on the street. I hate the people that hang around train stations, trying to intimidate people and be cool. I hate people who drive around in expensive cars with the music so loud that it drowns out conversation with people two feet away.

But the average person fulfills necessary niches. Wanna lose all of our sanitation workers, lawyers, store owners?

Having said that, some ordinary people can be quite annoying.

I'm unable to hate humanity. I can too easily visualize myself doing everything that annoys me, and I take almost everything as an opportunity for more knowledge; picking up trash in the park let me find out by the frequency of cigarette butts that people never smoke while they are walking and almost never stand when here is an opportunity to sit. there seemed to be no preference for north versus south but that people preferred areas where they could socialize.

The story's the same everywhere. I don't think I've ever met anybody who didn't spend a significant fraction of their time being an idiot.

But really, there's nothing worth hating about that. Expecting human beings to always be rational, or kind, or whatever is no less unreasonable than expecting trees to bear candy. We are imperfect creatures, but we can do neat things anyway.

But would it be so hard as to walk a TINY bit faster? Like those people you see at school who walk in a nice horizontal LINE and clog the hallway. I could move faster dragging myself around with my arms. Its not that they are stupid or anything but they can't seem to understand that sometimes people need to get somewhere moving at a speed faster than 2 MPH.

Not if it's compared to your peers. Read the response.

OF COLLEGE STUDENTS, 80% felt they were above average 'college student' intelligence. I should have stated that in the original, non-linked quote.

Also, I think it's safe to say that most people who goto college aren't doing so because they are smarter then the average, but merely because they were fortuitously born into economic stability.

depends on which college. So, I would have to disagree with you there. Most people go to college because they are smart, not because they have rich parents.

Though I do agree (I think this is what you were really saying) that there are a lot of people who had poor parents and therefore, despite high intelligence, did not go to college.

having never been a smart poor person, I cannot say.

No, the real point is that, according to this survey, MOST people think of themselves as smarter then their peers/people around them.

Japanese men typically rated themselves as less intelligent then their, btw.

So, the claim that 'most people are stupid' is narcissistic and a little indicative of where on that bell curve you PROBABLY fall.

Haha, In my final year of high school our math teacher always used to be late to class so our whole class used to make a horizontal line across the hallway blocking all the lower years from passing. It was quiet amusing how many people didn't realize we were doing it on purpose.

If there is one thing i would like to lose it would be my ego. Oh come on... Hate? You hate someone because they're stupid? You're worried about the future? Now that's stupid.

The "future" (more accurately, humanity's future, Earth and the universe will do fine without us), if anything, will be hindered by people being uncaring, uncooperative or ignorant. Those qualities have nothing to do with intelligence. Humans are becoming more intelligent all the time, due to higher standards of living.

Why do you care if the person you're talking with is stupid? Personally I would much rather have a good, honest and friendly group of friends rather than an intelligent, alienating one. Luckily, my friends are both good and smart. But I don't go around mocking other people because they have trouble with their children.

Stop judging others based on the few minutes you see them on the street. Or, alternatively, become a monk, maybe you'll like that better.

Wow, and I consider *myself* a bit of a misanthropist...

I really, really disagree with most of the above posters: the average human is actually exceedingly awesome*.

Sure, he'll not be as well-read or as adept at problem-solving as some of the xkcd'ers are, but this does not mean that they are uninteresting: if one just bothers to listen to a fellow human, he'll usually find out that they *do* have some cool skill, and that they'll be happy to talk to you about it - try it, you'll be surprised.

It's pretty hard to find a genuinely dull human: I'm not saying that they don't exist, but in my experience they are fairly rare specimens - and even then, I wonder if it's really them who are dull, or if instead it's me who isn't able to understand their brand of coolness.

*Well, reality show participants excepted, but they don't count as people anyway.

I agree somewhat with the OP, but when I say "people are stupid", I don't mean, they can't do algebra, or don't understand relativity.

I say people are stupid because they don't use common sense... I have friends from school who dropped out and didn't even do the last 2 years of high school, let alone go to college/uni, and I don't think they're stupid. They are great people, and don't annoy me with 'stupidity' at all.

And, yes, I hate shopping centres/other crowded places, because people walk so damn slowly there, which is really irritating... I don't want to take half an hour to get from one end to the other, so don't take up the entire width of the walking area when you just want to stand around and do nothing.

I think that's the crux of the matter. I have absolutely no problem with people walking slowly. But I do have a problem with them taking the entire width of the walkway. It happens a lot here, because we get large groups of tourists, and I wonder if sometimes things like this are why the residents have a tendency to dislike visitors.

Back to the OP: As for people in the outside world being too loud - I don't think I've noticed it much myself outside of pub-kicking-out-times. Other than that if there's is a someone who is too loud it tends to be of a short enough duration - so it's over before I'm irritated.

I used to hang out with 2 groups of people in my last year at school. In one group, half left High School early, and of those who stayed, only 2 passed. In the other group, everyone passed, and went away to university. I much prefer the group that failed. The Failures are people who like to go out, get drunk/high, talk to strangers, and do fun things. They are incredibly accepting of people, and among the kindest people I know. The Passers like the fact that they are superior, and show their superiority to people by calling people names. I recently went to a party with them, and the whole time was spent standing in a circle, laughing at stupid things people said and telling people about funny pictures they saw on the internet. No one else at the party came over and tried to talk, and often people were referred to as "idiot", "faggot", or "dumb cunt". They don't accept any viewpoint other than their own. I much prefer the Failures as a group of people. Hating someone because they are stupid, lack common sense, or cannot grasp certain aspects of life that seem obvious to you isn't a very compassionate thing to do.

Having that ego is probably a good way of attracting a mate. If you believe you are intelligent (or better in some other way) you are probably more likely to advertise that fact.

I have to be around someone a long time before I hate them. And even then the only reason I could hate them would be if they were to disagree with me aesthetically on everything. And I mean everything. If you don't like the same movies, music, books, art, people, ideas of beauty, everything as me, then I will be less likely to like you. I don't care if walk slow, shout every word, and let your kids run rampant, if you think that Fight Club was good and that my friend is pretty, we can get along. And even if you don't, I won't hate you. I'll probably just try to spend less time around you. (Hating someone because they don't agree with your definition of beautiful or good isn't a very compassionate thing to do.)

Disagreeing with you in politic, religion, economic and other matters doesn't make a person dumb.

The "average man" loves his friends and family, stays at his job even though he doesn't like it, participates in cultural events, enjoys music, movies, books, earns money and contributes to society through taxes and possibly charitable donations, and most importantly is loved enough by a few people that he is one of the most significant things in their lives. I have no idea what a trinomial is. I failed my last year of High School. I cannot multiply 2-digit numbers in my head. Every day of the week, I take a different route to work. My favourite one is 15km longer than the shortest one, but I get to drive along the top of a cliff, through a forest, and right alongside the beach. I will go shopping, and spend 4 hours in the shops and buy a cd and a shirt, and consider it time well spent. I'm not intelligent or efficient, but I don't consider myself hateworthy.

I object to you quoting almost everyone except me.

Also, on the opposite end of the spectrum to the slow walkers, and equally annoying to me, are the businessmen who walk really quickly and don't apologise when they launch you into orbit bump into you.

Which has lead to my latest theory about planes:

First class seats are always at the front of the plane because businessmen need to get to places one second sooner than everyone else. Their time is that precious.

It's actually because it's one of the quietest parts of the plane, but hey, that works too.

I can and I will. Hey, I never said it was rational! I love to hate the masses just as I hate to love people. It's the loveable contradictions upon which life is based and which makes it interesting.

Agreed. I will not let a loud minority ruin my opinion of what is likely to be a large majority of thoroughly decent people.

Sorta agreed. My friends are a mixture of university students/graduates and academic failures. We all get along great and our intellectual prowess is the furthest issue from anyone's mind. We go out, have fun, talk to people, do interesting things and support each other in tough times. The intelligence of each individual is not the reason we are friends.

It seems to me that most of what people are hating is rudeness or lack of respect rather than stupidity. At least, that's what is being described in this thread. I think its healthy to resent such behaviour, because disrespectfulness is a subtle attack on you.

But I don't hate people (well, I can think of 2 or 3), but I do have low tolerance for certain behaviours.

George Bush did not win the majority the first time (47.9% vs. Gore's 48.4%), but he did the second time (50.7% vs. Kerry's 48.3%). Still, you're right, that second election was one of the biggest demonstrations of idiocy (or Stockholm syndrome) in history. The first time around, no one knew it could be this bad; it started as a frat prank, I swear!

I love people.

I love it when they walk too slow, taking the time to enjoy life instead of always rushing to some destination.

I love it when they talk to loud, adding to the buzz and music of a public space and creating a sort of hum composed of people telling private secrets loud enough for everyone to hear.

I love it when they don't try to control their children, letting tiny replicas of humans run amok in the streets and grow like they ought to, without a cage, and develop into even more lovely people.

People are the best. They're so much nicer than we give them credit for. I love talking to random people. Even stupid people are often really friendly and open if you're not a pretentious jerk to them.

That's a lot of negative energy being put to waste.

We could, like, set fire to people's lawns to show them how much they displease us.

How can you people have time to hate anyone?

I agree with ^pig^ (It's ascending dammit)
It's great watching people. I often go to a cafe, get a drink and a newspaper, and sit outside, watching people walking past (post-paper-reading). You see the kids going around, oh wow, those guys are fighting the fucking Sith, right in front of the adults, and the adults aren't seeing this life-or-death struggle unfold. That one's put his little wooden propellable-scooter-bike-thing behind an adult bike, like a mini adult. Thats so cute (like, 2 years old kid). Kids shouldn't be restrained really, unless they're smashing shit up (not twigs, windows, cars, etc). It's also nice watching couples lost within themselves, drifting along, totally smitten. Not caring where they're going.

It's fine in that situation. When you really do need to be somewhere, it's nice to have the flow going with you. But it doesn't. So you get there slightly late.

Or you leave earlier.

(When taking photographs, I have been known to take 2 hours to go 1 kilometre. Mind you, I'm super-dawdling at that point. When going to get a magazine from the shop, I just put a nice beat on and just stroll to it. Which makes me go fast, I have long legs/height)

However, I dislike people totally chilling and letting others take them where they want. Ie. People should have opinions and not be afraid to oppose the masses, the mainstream.
Anything I said pre-2014 that you want to quote me on, just run it past me to check I still agree with myself.
