Once again, I will never again be able to do something I do all the time without thinking of xkcd. If someone has the ability to read my thoughts, Randall is getting a lot of free advertisement.

It took me a while to get the "my second relationship", but when I did, I started laughing uncontrollably.

I really hate it when this happens. That and when someone I know greets me while walking by and I don't notice so they think I'm ignoring them.

Phones keep getting smaller and harder to see from a distance too.

I wonder how far out that blip is.

Similar, but not as bad (in my humble oppinion) is when you think someone is waving to you, but theres someone behind you....
done a lot in movies and TV, so when it happens you really feel like a fool...
Its even worse if someone notices...

And the second relationship thing is hilarious... :P

I'm not sure I totally get the TITLE text (see that? I called it the right thing).

Waht bernanke?

Too lazy to look it up.

The idea of it was that he had an entire relationship without realizing that the other person was just talking on the phone.

Wacky!

Ok so the blip at "My Second Relationship" shows a long conversation in the ackward zone which is apparently VERY rare. I am not sure why the longer a conversation goes the more inherently awkward it is.

And I still don't understand what Fed Chairman Bernanke has to do with anything. Is that really supposed to reference him? And why would he have a crossbow?

Pretty funny though all in all.

That's even funnier than what I got out of it... (I skipped the phone part, and just imagined it was a really one-sided relationship.)

I find this never happens to me (the occasional "HI!" or "NAME!" shouted out causes me to turn...), since I hardly ever respond even when people talk to me. They have to make it clear that I'm the intended recipient before I managed to realize that they're right beside me...

The story of my life.

Also, having a common name doesn't help much in public.

As of late, I tend to have more problems when I'm actually the one on the phone, not having realized that the call was dropped five minutes ago. Usually no one knows that I'm just talking to myself, but I still feel like an idiot afterwards. But then it's especially bad when you're talking into the phone and it suddenly rings....

Needless to say, Randall needs to kindly get out of my head.

In an interesting coincidence, this is actually remarkably similar to how I accidentally caused the Valerie Plame Affair.

I'll be the confused person who answers when you talk to the person behind me.

And yes, the "second relationship" marker is the Point of Extreme Win from this strip.

Man, it took me forever to understand the graph. For some reason, the two variables were hard to reconcile in my head. I had a hard time seeing how they were related, and then what a point would represent.

But I've got it now.

It's not just a regular conversation. It's a conversation in which he's talking to someone who's actually just on the phone. As the conversation goes on, the conversation gets odder and odder and it's more and more embarrassing when you finally realize that you've been talking to someone who's talking to someone else the whole time. The blip represents a really long conversation like this that he thought was a relationship.

This happens to me quite often. Somebody starts talking ona phone just as I pass by.Good thign my standard response to somebody saying hi to me is a nearly inaudible "nmh" and a wave, which you probably won't notice if you didn't intend to say hi to me. I also live deep in the akward zone.

One of the things I love best about cell phone headsets is that I can stick one in my ear and walk around talking to myself, as is my wont, and nobody thinks it at all odd.

Of course, this comic suggests something even more devious: Stick in a bluetooth with nobody on the other end, go up to someone and say hello, and see how absurdly odd you can make the conversation while still maintaining it before the other person realizes you have a headset in your ear.

A graph with no scale is no graph at all...

Postby WakkaWakka » Mon Sep 15, 2008 6:39 am UTC

So lets try to get some real numbers here...

The Y axis is extrapolated from the height of the single instance of the 'Second Relationship'.

The X axis is a combination of putting the peak of recognition at eight words "Hi, Hi, What's up, Uh, Not a lot", and putting the awkward factor at around 10-13 words. This is provided in seconds and words assuming 150 wpm.

Image

So if we count the number of times this has happened to Randall...

Image

We get 89 instances of confusion. But still no idea how long the relationship lasted.
