You're going to go to Google and you're going to type in the two drugs you're taking or the one drug you're taking and you're going to type in side-effects. What are you experiencing? So we said: "Okay, let's ask Google if they will share their search logs with us so that we can look at the search logs and see if patients are doing these kinds of searches." Google, I am sorry to say, denied our requests. So I was bummed and I was at a dinner with a colleague who works at Microsoft Research ... and he said: "No, Russ. You might not understand. We not only have Bing searches but if you used Internet Explorer to do searches at Google, Yahoo, Bing, any, then for 18 months we keep that data for research purposes only."
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.

From later in the talk:

"People are worried about data. They're worried about their privacy and their security. They should be. We need secure systems. But we can't have a system that closes that data off because it is too rich of a source of inspiration, innovation and discovery for new things in medicine."

I have feelings about all this.
In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

Your child gets sick. The doctor prescribes a drug. There are side-effects. You start looking stuff up. You dig out details. You have ideas. You look up known drug interactions. You search for particular kinds of drug with and without particular modes of action. Microsoft sends the details of those searches to a researcher. The researcher figures out what you're looking for. The doctor hears from the researcher and prescribes the additional drug you were trying to identify. Your child no longer suffers side-effects, and makes a full recovery. Because this is America, you get a bill for $278000. Hrrrm.

French animation : Dix-huit kilomètres trois (18.003 km or should this be parsed as 18.3 km?). A super short animated thing about three middle school girls who may be orphans or something, quite cute imho. The voice actresses are obviously in their 20s, but I thought it was funny to hear them deliver their lines that were supposed to be from middle schoolers (I mean this is both awkward and funny). Featuring the Black Lips, a punk rock group I wouldn't know, but they sound good.

You only have to watch for about 5 seconds from that timestamp to see it.

I think that's a cat somewhere not someone saying "Wow!" but either way it was good.

Mark Rober spent most of his time at JPL working on Curiosity. As far as I'm aware he didn't do any significant work on InSight.

How willing would you be to risk 4 (branded) phones for a youtube video and a bit of personal vengeance? And to retrieve your package from a thief's garbage bin?
It irks me that I can't tell whether that video is staged or not.

He was nicer than me. I'd have put nine little half-litre milk bottles in there, with an explosive charge in the middle one (under 100 grains is a signalling device, not a destructive device) and eight litres of stale urine in the others. It'd stink a lot longer than the fart gas shots, and be no cheaper to get out of the car than that glitter.

I'm wondering where you'd get your stale urine from. Craigslist?

Since we're on the subject, this was a commercial for Weird Wally's Used Cars (Lincoln, NE).

I can't find a picture of one, but he also used to put up big yellow billboards with black lettering that said, 'This is Weird Country." Nothing else, just that.

Two minutes of Google Earth photos, edited into animation. (Probably some danger of seizures, but I found it delightful--particularly the bit with the pond or lake.)

I haven't checked for Vi Hart's videos for too long. This video in particular is a gem. :D (Spoiler: it's not about math; it does have the familiar atmosphere of vihart.)

I concur, despite her attempts at advertising* of late. Her whole series about the Transformers films was great too.

I've also come across Stratzenblitz's KSP projects. Very cool spacecraft with excellent video editing (and music if you enjoy the genre). Particularly the recent low solar orbit space station.

*Come on, your whole channel is about analysis—in particular one video on advertising—and critical thinking. How do you imagine your audience is going to like an ad segment, even when done in the most blasé and ironic manner?

I really need to curate what I watch on YouTube. Most of the popular videos are trash. I guess that's the price I pay for browsing in incognito mode.

I'm not that sure how it works, but you could book mark some videos that describe your general interests, and then visit them when you start a new incognito session.

Does anyone else like videos of computer simulation and rendering demonstrations? like, 'here's are program for simulating flow, here's what it'd look like if a rabbit sculpted from shaving cream fell through a tennis racket" and then there's a bunch of words and letters i don't understand explaining what makes this rendering program better.

PiroPito First Playthrough of Minecraft!!(0u0): Play list it's a Japanese let's play, with great English subtitles. He doesn't look at any spoilers, or tutorials, or let anyone tell him about how the game works. I'm really curious what it's like to watch for someone who's never played Minecraft

Your Dinosaurs are Wrong: playlist a little educational series that's just a guy talking about dinosaur toys, and there's some charming paper cut-out art and cool info about dinosaurs.
