I have a great idea for a sitcom...

Postby Thesh » Sun Sep 19, 2010 4:49 am UTC

So there's these two guys, they are best friends and the work at the same place (e.g. science department of the university, electronics store, psychic detective agency) and one of the guys has the hots for this blond chick... After that, it pretty much writes itself!

What a funny fleeting or random thought.

I'm having a hard time deciding what the purpose of this post was? Is it a swing at The Big Bang Theory? Or at sitcoms in general? Or...

I had a good idea for a movie yesterday, but I'm not telling you! (I don't want anybody stealing it)

A guy gets a great idea for a movie, but he's so paranoid about talking about it, since he thinks it's sooo good, he develops a code language only he understands. So he manages to get in contact with a movie producer and spits the idea to him. The movie producer dies because it's so good, and he is now wanted for murder. After that it practically writes itself.

That's nowhere near as good as my idea. It involves multiple characters and a dramatic conflict climaxing in the course of the movie. I'm just not done with the rest of the details.

That's brilliant! But I think you need a bit near the end where they answer most of the questions and calm things down a little.

How about this one: It's about a middle class family, the husband is lovable but stupid, the wife is intelligent but controlling. They get in fights all the time, but resolve them by the end of the episode because they love each other. Also they have a zany neighbor.

I've got another one, it's about the day-to-day of a workplace (eg. paper company, hotel, radio station (in New York or Cincinnati), television (major broadcast network, local Minneapolis station, cable sports or television newsmagazine), taxi company, government agency (mayor's office, courthouse, or parks and recreation department), fashion magazine, airport, hospital or general practitioner's office) and all the characters have the same quirks and foibles as regular people, but writ large for more comedic value. The details of the workplace and work-related problems that come up will mostly serve to bring out different reactions from the characters. Add some romantic subplots between characters if things get dull.

I reckon if you made the male lead overweight or unattractive and the female lead way out of his league, you just might have a winner on your hands.

You'd better get Ted Danson's bones, though.

TV sitcom writer has been working on a TV show so good, it writes itself.

Except it's literally writing itself and is starting to take over, blurring the distinctions between TV and reality. There barely is a station crew, the few cameramen/ behind the scenes people left are completely enthralled by The Show. The actors/ actresses are split between enthrallment and greed (you still get paid + they are immortal since you stay the same age during a sitcom). Except now The Show is starting to spread out to those who watch, changing their reality to match TV reality.

Only the combined efforts of the penitent writer and one genre savvy man, obsessed with TV Tropes might be enough to combat this menace.

Maybe one of the guys can have an on-off relationship with a charachter that will continiously ruin his chances of a proper relationship during the course of the program, but it's cool because they were meant for each other and end up getting together for good in the end?
Spelling and grammar can go screw themselves.
