Comic 99 cypher

Postby sportsracer48 » Mon Jan 10, 2011 3:40 am UTC

Xkcd is the webcomic, right, and its 99th comic was called binary heart. When solved, that binary said iloveyou over and over again, but some of the Os were capitalized and some weren't. It you called o 1 and O 0, then took the resulting string and appended 011 to the beginning (011 being the last three odd digits of the original heart), then translated it from binary, you got the string:

sch

the 138th comic was called pointers. It had three pointers in it, but they were really ascii codes, for

:(!:
c99,
sch.

sch, again huh? c99 must be comic 99, but I have no clue about :(!:, or sch for that matter. All I know is that if you type :(!: without holding down shift, you get ;91;
We should solve this.

Yes, we should solve this. Let me get my aluminum hat out first.

I do sympathise with your position, that maybe this is a little far fetched. That said, the xkcd book had encrypted material in it, so its not impossible. It would be better, though, if the OP would supply some marked up images of the comics in question. For instance, I can't really see what is meant by the talk about different 0's. They all look different, and I'm not seeing any obvious way to classify them.

It's the differences of the O's (the ascii letters) after the 1s and 0s have been converted to ascii. The difference being only the 2^5 bit. This gives us 15 variable bits: 10011 00011 01000

The idea is that 010 10011 010 00011 010 01000 is just every set of 3 fives, prepended with 010 (which is the binary string any capital ascii letter will start with), you get the letters "SCH" Though one could have done the same with "011" and gotten "sch" (lowercase), like in the pointers comic.

All this was discussed in the comic 99 thread, so I'm going to guess SCH has no meaning and it was included in pointers because Randall thought it would be funny to make a reference back to that comic to keep people trying to figure it out. Afterall, you can put "010" or "011" at the beginning of a random 5-bit string and get an ascii letter 13 times out of 16, and those other 3 out of 16 will just be punctiation. That means if those bits were just random, there is a 53% chance that they would give a binary string with this method.

I don't think it's meaningless. I can't see Randall sending us on a wild goose chase like that. It really can't be a coincidence that the last three numbers of binary heart were 011, or that the Os were different. We need a Waterhouse.

Hmm... Maybe there was a person with initials SCH, during writing 99. Then there was a break-up, or something, which led to the sad face, then the link back to comic 99, then SCH as the initials again. Maybe.

Makes sense, so who is sch? That's the question now.

But "Megan" doesn't start with an S, C, or H...

Furthermore, from the original post it looks like it was sch. The period implies that it's an abbreviation of some sort. Have fun.

Then how come it's lowercase?

I would like to point out that the last character of each pointer corresponds to the punctuation that follows it in the comic (with the exception of the first, which has no following punctuation)

I don't suppose that anyone else has realized the mouse-over text on that comic

I knew that, I was saying AT THE TIME of 99, there WAS love. Then AT THE TIME of 138, there wasn't.]
Plus, don't double post. Use the Edit button.

Also, the end of the first post (the ;91; bit.). Comic 91 was called Pwned. Maybe the :(!: was referring to being PWNED.
So, what have we got?
Pwned love, [whoever SCH is]

Just posting up comics that might be relevant. I know jack about coding, but maybe there will help someone else get it.

Comic 40, 44, 49, 55, 58, 62, 63, 69, 71, 76, 92, and 98

I think he dated two girls during this time. The second one broke up with him at comic 98, and 99 was him saying that he still loved her. Don't know if it worked out. Incidentally, this is before Megan came into the strip.

I took a few minutes and typed in the binary to an ASCII encoder/decoder. it came up with "iloveyOuilOveyouiloveyOuilOveyOuiloveyouilOveyouilOveyOu".
